Passive Verbs with Two Objects

Voz Passiva com Dois ObjetosThe PassiveB2

Verbs like give, send, offer and show have two objects: a thing and a person. In the passive, English usually makes the person the subject: I was given a scholarship. This structure does not exist in Portuguese, so it is one of the clearest signs of a confident B2 speaker. Na voz passiva, o inglês normalmente transforma a pessoa em sujeito: I was given a scholarship.

B2 Two objects, two possible passives

In the active sentence The school gave Ana a prize, there is an indirect object (Ana, the person who receives) and a direct object (a prize, the thing). Either one can become the subject of the passive.

Person (subject)+be + past participle+thing
Thing (subject)+be + past participle+to / for + person
VersionExamplePortuguês
activeThe school gave Ana a prize.A escola deu um prêmio à Ana.
passive: person first (most common)Ana was given a prize.A Ana recebeu um prêmio.
passive: thing firstA prize was given to Ana.Um prêmio foi dado à Ana.

Notice the Portuguese translation. We cannot say “Ana foi dada um prêmio”, so we usually translate the person-first passive with receber, ganhar or an active sentence with an indefinite subject: “deram um prêmio à Ana”.Repare na tradução.

  • I was offered a job in São Paulo. (Me ofereceram um emprego em São Paulo.)
  • The students were shown the new lab. (Mostraram o novo laboratório aos alunos.)
  • We were sent the tickets by email.
  • The tickets were sent to all the participants.

Which one to choose?

English prefers to start a sentence with the topic we are talking about, which is usually a person. So She was given a second chance sounds more natural than A second chance was given to her. Use the thing-first version when the thing is the topic, or when the person is new or long information.O inglês prefere começar a frase pelo assunto da conversa, que normalmente é uma pessoa. Por isso She was given a second chance soa mais natural que A second chance was given to her.

B2 Common verbs and the to / for difference

Most verbs with two objects use to before the person when the thing comes first: give, send, offer, show, lend, pay, promise, owe, teach, tell, sell, award, hand. With these, the person-first passive is very natural.

Verbs that use for (buy, make, cook, find, get, build) are different. The person-first passive is possible with some of them but often sounds strange, so the thing-first version is safer.Os verbos que usam for (buy, make, cook, find, get, build) são diferentes.

give (to)Each student was given a tablet.Cada aluno recebeu um tablet.
promise (to)We were promised a pay rise.Prometeram um aumento para nós.
teach (to)I was taught English by my aunt.Quem me ensinou inglês foi minha tia.
buy (for)A cake was bought for the party.Um bolo foi comprado para a festa.
make (for)This dress was made for my grandmother.

Verbs that do not allow the person as subject

Some verbs look like give but only accept to + person, never two objects side by side: explain, describe, suggest, say, announce, report, introduce, recommend. So they cannot have a person-first passive.

  • The rules were explained to the new students. (As regras foram explicadas aos alunos novos.)
  • The plan was described to us in detail.
  • A new schedule was suggested to the team. (Um novo cronograma foi sugerido à equipe.)

Typical Brazilian slip

✗ We were explained the problem. ✓ The problem was explained to us.Como em português dizemos “explicaram o problema para nós”, é comum tentar “we were explained”.

B2 Tenses, modals and the agent

The person-first passive works in every tense and with modals. Only the form of be changes; the past participle stays the same.

present simpleNew employees are given a laptop.Os funcionários novos recebem um notebook.
present continuousThe patients are being shown the results.Os resultados estão sendo mostrados aos pacientes.
present perfectPedro has been offered a contract.Ofereceram um contrato ao Pedro.
future / modalYou will be sent a confirmation code.Você vai receber um código de confirmação.
modal perfectThey should have been told the truth.Deveriam ter contado a verdade a eles.

Add by + agent only when it is important or surprising information. In most cases, the agent is obvious or unknown, and that is exactly why we choose the passive.

  • Juliana was awarded a full scholarship by Harvard.
  • Have you been told the date of the exam yet? (Já te disseram a data da prova?)
  • I wasn’t given any information about the delay.

Teacher’s tip

When you want to translate “me deram”, “me disseram” or “me ofereceram” into English, think of the person-first passive: I was given, I was told, I was offered. It sounds much more natural than “they gave me” when you don’t know who “they” are.Quando quiser traduzir “me deram”, “me disseram” ou “me ofereceram”, pense na passiva com a pessoa no início: I was given, I was told, I was offered. Soa muito mais natural do que “they gave me” quando você não sabe quem são “eles”.

B2 Pronouns, -ing forms and infinitives

When the thing is a pronoun (it, them), the thing-first version is usually better: It was given to me sounds more natural than I was given it. When both are full nouns, prefer the person first.Quando a coisa é um pronome (it, them), a versão com a coisa no início costuma ser melhor: It was given to me soa mais natural que I was given it.

The structure also appears after verbs and prepositions that need an -ing form or an infinitive: being given, to be offered, to be told.A estrutura também aparece depois de verbos e preposições que pedem a forma -ing ou o infinitivo: being given, to be offered, to be told.

  • I hate being told what to do. (Detesto que me digam o que fazer.)
  • She expects to be offered a better position next year.
  • After being shown the room, we decided to stay.
  • The keys? They were handed to the receptionist. (As chaves? Foram entregues à recepcionista.)

Person first

Natural when the person is the topic of the conversation.

My brother was lent a car for the weekend.

Thing first

Natural when the thing is the topic or is a pronoun.

The car was lent to him by a friend.

Formal writing and exams

In reports, news and exam texts, this structure is very frequent: Participants were given a questionnaire, Residents were offered compensation. Recognizing it quickly helps with reading questions in vestibular and international exams.Em relatórios, notícias e textos de prova, essa estrutura é muito frequente: Participants were given a questionnaire (Os participantes receberam um questionário), Residents were offered compensation (Foi oferecida uma indenização aos moradores).

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ To me was given a book. ✓ I was given a book.Em inglês, a frase não começa com “to me” como no português “a mim foi dado”. Use a pessoa como sujeito.

✗ She was gave a gift. ✓ She was given a gift.

✗ We were explained the rules. ✓ The rules were explained to us.Explain, describe e suggest não aceitam a pessoa como sujeito da passiva.

✗ A new phone was given me. ✓ A new phone was given to me.Quando a coisa vem primeiro, use to antes da pessoa.

✗ I was told about it the truth. ✓ I was told the truth about it.Mantenha o objeto (the truth) logo depois do verbo.
