Participle clauses let you say more with fewer words: Feeling tired, she went to bed instead of “Because she felt tired, she went to bed”. They are typical of good writing, news reports and the academic texts you find in vestibular exams. As orações reduzidas de particípio permitem dizer mais com menos palavras: Feeling tired, she went to bed em vez de “Because she felt tired, she went to bed”.
B2 The three types of participle
A participle clause has no subject and no conjugated verb. It starts with a participle, and its subject is normally the same as the subject of the main clause. There are three forms, and each one carries a different meaning.
|---|---|---|---|
| present participle (-ing) | active, same time | Walking home, I saw an accident. |
| past participle (-ed / irregular) | passive | Built in 1920, the house needs repairs. | Construída em 1920, a casa precisa de reformas. |
| perfect participle (having + pp) | active, earlier action | Having finished lunch, we went out. | Depois de terminar o almoço, saímos. |
Present participle: active meaning
Use the -ing form when the subject does the action. It can show time (when, while), reason (because, as) or simply add a second action happening at the same time.

Past participle: passive meaning
Use the past participle when the subject receives the action. It works like a short passive clause, and it is very common in descriptions and news.
- Written in simple English, the book is perfect for beginners.

Passive: past participle
The subject receives the action.O sujeito sofre a ação.
Interviewed on TV, the minister denied everything. (Entrevistado na TV, o ministro negou tudo.)
Perfect participle: one action before another
Use having + past participle to make it clear that the first action was completed before the second. The negative is not having + past participle. A negativa é not having + particípio.

Reduced relative clauses
Participles also replace relative clauses after a noun: the man who is sitting there becomes the man sitting there, and the cars which were made in Brazil becomes the cars made in Brazil.Os particípios também substituem orações relativas depois de um substantivo: the man who is sitting there vira the man sitting there, e the cars which were made in Brazil vira the cars made in Brazil.

Reading tip for vestibular
When a sentence starts with an -ing or -ed form followed by a comma, look for the subject right after the comma. That subject is the one doing (or receiving) the action of the participle.
C1 Dangling participles, conjunctions and independent subjects
At C1, the challenge is precision. A participle clause must refer to the right subject, and sometimes you need a conjunction or a separate subject to keep the meaning clear. No C1, o desafio é a precisão.
Dangling participles
If the subject of the main clause is not the one doing the participle action, the sentence becomes illogical, and sometimes funny. Portuguese allows more freedom here, so Brazilians often make this mistake in essays.
Check the subject
✗ Walking along the beach, the sun was very hot. ✓ Walking along the beach, we felt the heat of the sun.
✗ Having finished the report, the computer crashed. ✓ Having finished the report, I sent it to my boss.
Participles after conjunctions
To make the meaning more precise, you can keep a conjunction before the participle: after, before, while, when, since (time), although, if, unless, once.Para deixar o sentido mais preciso, você pode manter uma conjunção antes do particípio: after, before, while, when, since (tempo), although, if, unless, once.
- While living in London, Rodrigo worked as a waiter.
- If taken regularly, this medicine is very effective.
- Although offered a promotion, she decided to leave the company.
- Once opened, the jar should be kept in the fridge.
Independent subjects and the passive perfect
In formal English, a participle clause can have its own subject, different from the main clause. This is called an absolute construction. The passive perfect form having been + past participle describes an earlier action that the subject received.
|---|---|---|
| own subject + -ing | The weather being fine, we had lunch outside. |
| own subject + pp | All things considered, it was a good year. | Considerando tudo, foi um bom ano. |
| with + object + -ing | With prices rising, families are spending less. |
| having been + pp | Having been warned, they took a different road. | Como tinham sido avisados, pegaram outra estrada. |
Fixed expressions
Some participle phrases are accepted even without a matching subject, because they work like fixed expressions: generally speaking, judging by, considering, given, assuming, provided.Algumas expressões com particípio são aceitas mesmo sem sujeito correspondente, porque funcionam como expressões fixas: generally speaking (de modo geral), judging by (a julgar por), considering (considerando), given (dado), assuming (supondo), provided (desde que).
Judging by his accent, he’s from Recife.
Register
Participle clauses are more common in writing than in speech. In conversation, a full clause (When I got home, I…) is more natural; in essays and reports, the participle clause sounds more elegant and concise. Na conversa, a oração completa (When I got home, I…)
