Numbers

NúmerosVocabulary, Spelling and PronunciationA1

Numbers are everywhere: prices, times, phone numbers, dates and addresses. Here you will learn the cardinal numbers (one, two, three), the ordinal numbers (first, second, third) and, most importantly, how native speakers really say each type of number.

A1 Cardinal numbers: 0 to 19

Cardinal numbers are the ones we use to count.

Zero or oh?

Zero has more than one name. In maths and temperatures we say zero. In phone numbers, room numbers and years, natives usually say oh: room 304 is “three oh four”.

A1 The tens: 20 to 100

How to make 21 to 99

Ten + hyphen + unit: twenty-one, thirty-two, forty-five, ninety-nine. There is no “and” between the ten and the unit.Dezena + hífen + unidade: twenty-one, thirty-two, forty-five, ninety-nine.

  • My grandfather is seventy-three years old. (Meu avô tem setenta e três anos.)
  • There are thirty-two students in my class.
  • The bus number is forty-five. (O número do ônibus é quarenta e cinco.)
  • The book costs sixty-nine reais. (O livro custa sessenta e nove reais.)

Forty, not “fourty”

Four and fourteen have a “u”, but forty does not. It is one of the most common spelling mistakes, even among native speakers.

Teen or ty?

Numbers ending in -teen have the strong syllable at the end; numbers ending in -ty have it at the beginning. Listen to the difference:Os números terminados em -teen têm a sílaba forte no final; os terminados em -ty, no começo. Ouça a diferença:

-teen-ty
thirTEEN (13)THIRty (30)
fourTEEN (14)FORty (40)
fifTEEN (15)FIFty (50)
sixTEEN (16)SIXty (60)
sevenTEEN (17)SEVenty (70)
eighTEEN (18)EIGHty (80)
nineTEEN (19)NINEty (90)

Teacher’s tip

When a price or a time is important and you are not sure what you heard, ask: Sorry, was that one-five or five-oh? Natives do the same to avoid confusion between fifteen and fifty.

And after hundred

In British English, we always use and before the tens and units: two hundred and fifty, one thousand and ten. In American English, it is common to leave it out: two hundred fifty. Both forms are correct. No inglês britânico, sempre usamos and antes das dezenas e unidades: two hundred and fifty, one thousand and ten. No americano, é comum omitir: two hundred fifty. As duas formas estão certas.

No plural after a number

Say two hundred (not “two hundreds”), three thousand, five million. The plural only appears when there is no number before it: hundreds of people, millions of dollars.Diga two hundred (e não “two hundreds”), three thousand, five million. O plural só aparece quando não há número antes: hundreds of people (centenas de pessoas), millions of dollars (milhões de dólares).

  • The stadium holds sixty thousand people. (O estádio comporta sessenta mil pessoas.)
  • Hundreds of fans were waiting outside. (Centenas de fãs estavam esperando do lado de fora.)
  • Brazil has more than two hundred million people.
  • The car cost forty-five thousand reais. (O carro custou quarenta e cinco mil reais.)

Comma and point: the opposite of Portuguese

In English, the comma separates thousands and the point separates decimals: 1,500 = one thousand five hundred and 1.5 = one point five.

A1 How natives say numbers

Decimals and percentages

  • 3.5 = three point five (três vírgula cinco)
  • 0.75 = zero point seven five / nought point seven five (UK) (zero vírgula setenta e cinco)
  • 25% = twenty-five percent (vinte e cinco por cento)
  • 12.25 = twelve point two five (doze vírgula vinte e cinco)

After the point, say each digit separately: 0.75 is “point seven five”, not “point seventy-five”. Americans write percent; the British often write per cent.

Prices

  • $9.99 = nine ninety-nine / nine dollars and ninety-nine cents (9,99 dólares)
  • £15.50 = fifteen pounds fifty (15,50 libras)
  • R$ 120 = a hundred and twenty reais (120 reais)
  • €4.80 = four euros eighty (4,80 euros)

Years

Most years are said in two pairs: 19 + 85. For 2000 to 2009, we say two thousand (and). From 2010, both twenty ten and two thousand and ten are used, but the pair form is more common today. De 2000 a 2009, dizemos two thousand (and). A partir de 2010, usamos tanto twenty ten quanto two thousand and ten, mas a forma em pares é a mais comum hoje.

  • 2026 = twenty twenty-six (dois mil e vinte e seis)
  • in the 1990s = in the nineteen nineties (nos anos 90)

Phone numbers

Say the number digit by digit. Zero usually becomes oh, and repeated numbers can be said with double.

  • 3355-0721 = three three five five, oh seven two one (três três cinco cinco, zero sete dois um)
  • 3355-0721 = double three double five, oh seven two one (dois três, dois cinco, zero sete dois um)

Os números que terminam em 1, 2 e 3 seguem a mesma regra (21st, 32nd, 43rd), exceto 11th, 12th e 13th.
