Whose and the Possessive ‘s

Whose e o Caso GenitivoArticles, Nouns, Pronouns and DeterminersA1–B2

In Portuguese we say “o carro do John”. In English, the most common form puts the owner first and adds ‘s: John’s car. This structure is called the genitive case or possessive case, and the question that asks about the owner is Whose?Em português dizemos “o carro do John”. Em inglês, a forma mais comum é colocar o dono primeiro e acrescentar ‘s: John’s car. Essa estrutura se chama genitive case ou possessive case, e a pergunta que quer saber quem é o dono é Whose?

A1 Owner + ‘s + thing

The order is the opposite of Portuguese: the owner comes first, then ‘s, then the thing. There is no “of the” in the middle.A ordem é o contrário do português: primeiro vem o dono, depois o ‘s e depois a coisa. Não há “do” nem “da” no meio.

Owner+‘s+thing
  • John’s car (o carro do John)
  • my sister’s birthday (o aniversário da minha irmã)
  • the cat’s tail (o rabo do gato)
  • Is this the teacher’s pen? (Esta é a caneta da professora?)

Whose? Asking about the owner

To ask who something belongs to, use Whose + noun, or just Whose + be. Answer with ‘s or a possessive pronoun (mine, yours, his, hers…).Para perguntar de quem é alguma coisa, use Whose + substantivo, ou só Whose + be. Responda com ‘s ou com um pronome possessivo (mine, yours, his, hers…).

Whose+(noun)+is / are+this / that / these / those+?
  • Whose phone is this? It’s Laura’s. (De quem é este celular? É da Laura.)
  • Whose keys are these? They’re my dad’s. (De quem são estas chaves? São do meu pai.)
  • Whose is that bag? It’s mine. (De quem é aquela bolsa? É minha.)
  • Whose turn is it? It’s Alex’s. (De quem é a vez? É do Alex.)

Whose or who’s?

They sound the same, but whose asks about the owner and who’s is the short form of who is or who has: Who’s that girl? Whose dog is that?Têm o mesmo som, mas whose pergunta pelo dono e who’s é a contração de who is ou who has: Who’s that girl? Whose dog is that? (Quem é aquela menina? De quem é aquele cachorro?)

A2 The rules: singular, plural, irregular

Where the apostrophe goes depends on the owner. Look at the end of the word: if it is a plural ending in -s, add only the apostrophe.A posição do apóstrofo depende do dono. Olhe o final da palavra: se for um plural terminado em -s, acrescente só o apóstrofo.

B1 Two owners, families and of

Shared or separate?
