How do you say “quem me dera” or “eu queria ter feito isso” in English? With I wish and if only, followed by a tense that is one step back in the past. Once you understand this “unreal past”, wishes, regrets and complaints become easy.
B1+ I wish + past simple: wishes about the present
To say that you want a present situation to be different, use I wish + past simple. The verb is in the past, but the meaning is present: it shows that the situation is not real. In Portuguese we use the imperfect subjunctive: “quem me dera que eu tivesse…”.Para dizer que você queria que uma situação presente fosse diferente, use I wish + past simple.

I wish I were
With the verb be, we can use were for all persons: I wish I were taller. I wish I was taller is also common in conversation, but were is preferred in writing and exams.Com o verbo be, podemos usar were para todas as pessoas: Queria ser mais alto. I wish I was taller também é comum na conversa, mas were é o preferido na escrita e nas provas.
I wish I could
For abilities or possibilities that you don’t have, use wish + could. It is the natural way to say “queria poder” or “queria saber fazer”.Para habilidades ou possibilidades que você não tem, use wish + could.

I wish + past perfect: regrets about the past
To regret something that happened (or didn’t happen), go one more step back: wish + past perfect (had + past participle).

B2 Wish + would, if only
Wish + would expresses irritation about someone else’s behaviour, or a wish that something outside our control changes. It is a complaint more than a dream: “queria que você parasse de…”. We do not use I wish I would, because we control our own actions. Não usamos I wish I would, porque controlamos nossas próprias ações.
- I wish you would stop interrupting me. (Queria que você parasse de me interromper.)
- I wish my neighbours wouldn’t play loud music at night.

If only follows the same tenses as wish, but it is more emotional and dramatic, like “ah, se…” or “se pelo menos…”. It is often followed by an exclamation mark.

- If only we had left earlier, we wouldn’t have missed the flight.
- If only the bus would come! (Se pelo menos esse ônibus chegasse!)
B2 Would rather and it’s time: more unreal past
Would rather means “preferiria”. When the subject is the same person, use the base verb. When you talk about what you would prefer another person to do, use would rather + someone + past simple. This is the same unreal past you saw with wish.Would rather significa “preferiria”.
same subject: base verb
I prefer to do it myself.Eu prefiro fazer isso eu mesmo.
I’d rather stay at home tonight. (Prefiro ficar em casa hoje à noite.)
different subject: past simple
I prefer another person to do it.Prefiro que outra pessoa faça.

It’s time, it’s high time and it’s about time + subject + past simple say that something should already be happening: “já passou da hora de…”. High and about add impatience. Compare with it’s time to + verb, which is neutral. It’s time, it’s high time e it’s about time + sujeito + past simple dizem que algo já deveria estar acontecendo: “já passou da hora de…”. High e about acrescentam impaciência. Compare com it’s time to + verbo, que é neutro.

The unreal past family
After wish, if only, would rather (+ another subject), it’s time, suppose and second conditionals, a past form does not mean past time. It means “not real” or “not yet happening”. For a real past regret, go back once more to the past perfect.Depois de wish, if only, would rather (+ outro sujeito), it’s time, suppose e na segunda condicional, a forma no passado não indica tempo passado.
Teacher’s tip
Brazilians often translate “eu queria que…” with I wanted that…. In English, want is not followed by a that-clause. Say I wish you were here or I want you to be here, never “I want that you are here”.Os brasileiros costumam traduzir “eu queria que…” como I wanted that…. Diga I wish you were here (queria que você estivesse aqui) ou I want you to be here (quero que você esteja aqui), nunca “I want that you are here”.
