For, Since, From

For, Since e FromPrepositionsB1

For, since and from all talk about time, and in Portuguese they often hide behind the same little word: “há”, “desde” or “a partir de”. Learn what each one points to (a length of time, a starting point, or a start and an end) and you will stop saying “I live here since 2020” for good. For, since e from falam de tempo e, em português, muitas vezes se escondem atrás da mesma palavrinha: “há”, “desde” ou “a partir de”. Aprenda para onde cada um aponta (uma duração, um ponto de partida, ou um começo e um fim) e você nunca mais vai dizer “I live here since 2020”.

B1 For: a length of time

For + a period of time says how long something lasts: for ten minutes, for three months, for years. It works with any tense: past, present perfect and future. For + um período de tempo diz quanto tempo algo dura: for ten minutes (por dez minutos), for three months (por três meses), for years (há anos). Funciona com qualquer tempo verbal: passado, present perfect e futuro.

Verb+for+period (two days, six months, a long time)
  • I have worked at this school for twelve years. (Trabalho nesta escola há doze anos.)
  • Marina studied in Dublin for six months.
  • We’ll stay in Florianópolis for a week. (Vamos ficar em Florianópolis por uma semana.)
  • I haven’t seen my cousins for ages. (Não vejo meus primos há séculos.)

“Há” is not always the same

✗ I live here for five years. ✓ I have lived here for five years.

B1 Since: the starting point

Since + a point in time says when something started, and that it continues until now. That is why it normally goes with the present perfect (or present perfect continuous): since 2019, since Monday, since 8 o’clock, since I was a child. Por isso ele normalmente vem com o present perfect (ou present perfect continuous): since 2019 (desde 2019), since Monday (desde segunda), since 8 o’clock (desde as 8h), since I was a child (desde criança).

Present perfect+since+point in time / past simple clause
  • She has been a teacher since 2010. (Ela é professora desde 2010.)
  • I’ve been waiting here since nine o’clock. (Estou esperando aqui desde as nove.)
  • We have known each other since we were kids. (A gente se conhece desde criança.)
  • It’s been three years since I last went to Bahia.

For or since?

The same situation can be described with either word. Only the type of time expression changes: a quantity of time takes for; a date, day, hour or event takes since.

I’ve had this car for three years.Tenho este carro há três anos.period: for
I’ve had this car since 2023.Tenho este carro desde 2023.starting point: since
He’s been online for two hours.Ele está online há duas horas.period: for
He’s been online since lunch.
They’ve been married for a long time.
They’ve been married since the pandemic.Eles são casados desde a pandemia.starting point: since

B1 From: a start, often with an end

From marks a starting point too, but it does not say “until now”. It usually comes with an end point: from … to or from … until. Because it does not connect to the present, it works with any tense, including the past simple and the future.

Any tense+from+start+to / until+end
  • The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (A loja abre das 9h às 18h.)
  • I lived in Recife from 2015 until 2020. (Morei em Recife de 2015 até 2020.)
  • From next Monday, classes will start at 7:15.
  • From now on, I’m going to sleep earlier.

since: until now

The action started in the past and is still true.A ação começou no passado e continua verdadeira.

I’ve worked here since March. (Trabalho aqui desde março.)

from: start (and end)

A start point, often with an end, in any tense.

I worked there from March to June. (Trabalhei lá de março a junho.)

B1 For, since, from and ago together

Ago often joins this group because it also translates “há”. Remember: ago comes after the period and points to a finished moment in the past, so it goes with the past simple.

  • I started learning English ten years ago. (Comecei a aprender inglês há dez anos.)
  • I have been learning English for ten years. (Aprendo inglês há dez anos.)
  • I have been learning English since 2016. (Aprendo inglês desde 2016.)
  • I took classes at a language school from 2016 to 2019. (Fiz aulas numa escola de idiomas de 2016 a 2019.)

Teacher’s tip: the question test

Use How long have you…? to check your sentence. If the answer is a quantity, use for. If it is a date or event, use since. If the question is When did you…?, the answer uses ago or from … to.Use How long have you…? Se a pergunta é When did you…? (Quando você…?), a resposta usa ago ou from … to.

Since can also mean “because”

In more formal English, since can mean “já que”: Since you’re here, can you help me? The context makes the meaning clear.Num inglês mais formal, since pode significar “já que”: Já que você está aqui, pode me ajudar? O contexto deixa o sentido claro.
