Defining and Non-Defining Relative Clauses

Orações Relativas Restritivas e ExplicativasRelative ClausesB1–B2

Relative clauses let you add information about a person, thing or place without starting a new sentence. In Portuguese, “que” does almost all the work; in English you choose between who, which, that, whose, where and more. And two little commas can completely change the meaning of a sentence. Em português, o “que” faz quase todo o trabalho; em inglês você escolhe entre who, which, that, whose, where e outros.

B1 Defining relative clauses

A defining relative clause gives essential information: it tells us exactly which person or thing we mean. Without it, the sentence is incomplete or unclear. It comes right after the noun, with no commas.

whopeopleThe woman who lives next door is a nurse.
whichthings, animalsThe bus which goes to the centre is late.O ônibus que vai para o centro está atrasado.
thatpeople or things (informal, very common)The film that we watched was boring.O filme que assistimos era chato.
whosepossessionI have a friend whose father is a pilot.Tenho um amigo cujo pai é piloto.
whereplacesThis is the café where we met.Este é o café onde nos conhecemos.
whentimeI remember the day when I got my results.
  • The students who passed the test will get a certificate.
  • Is this the charger that came with your phone?
  • That’s the beach where we spent our honeymoon.

Leaving out the pronoun

In defining clauses, we can leave out who, which or that when it is the object of the clause, that is, when another subject comes after it. We cannot leave it out when it is the subject.

Object: can be left out

Another subject (I) follows the pronoun.Outro sujeito (I) vem depois do pronome.

The book (that) I’m reading is about the Amazon.

Subject: must stay

The pronoun is the subject of won.O pronome é o sujeito de won.

The girl who won the contest is from Manaus.

Teacher’s tip

The relative pronoun replaces the noun, so never repeat it with it, him or her: ✗ The book that I bought it. ✓ The book that I bought. This mistake comes from spoken Portuguese, as in “o livro que eu comprei ele”.O pronome relativo substitui o substantivo, então nunca o repita com it, him ou her: ✗ The book that I bought it. ✓ The book that I bought.

B1 Non-defining relative clauses

A non-defining relative clause adds extra information about a person or thing that is already identified. If we remove it, the sentence still makes complete sense. It goes between commas and is very common in writing, news and formal speech.

  • My grandmother, who is 90, still cooks lunch every Sunday.
  • Ouro Preto, which was founded in 1711, attracts thousands of tourists.
  • Our new coordinator, whose son studies here, is very experienced. (Nossa nova coordenadora, cujo filho estuda aqui, é muito experiente.)
  • We went to Paraty, where my parents got married. (Fomos a Paraty, onde meus pais se casaram.)

Three rules for non-defining clauses

1. Use commas (or a comma and a full stop). 2. Never use that. 3. Never leave out the pronoun.1. Nunca use that. 3. Nunca omita o pronome.

My car, which I bought last year, has already broken down. Here “which” is the object, but it still cannot be left out.

Commas change the meaning

Defining (no commas)

I have more than one brother; I mean the one in Recife.

My brother who lives in Recife is a doctor.

Non-defining (commas)

I have only one brother; Recife is extra information.

My brother, who lives in Recife, is a doctor.

In speech, non-defining clauses are marked by short pauses and a change in intonation, just like the commas in writing. Portuguese works the same way, so trust your instinct here.

B2 Prepositions, whom and quantifiers

When the relative clause needs a preposition, there are two options. In everyday English, the preposition goes at the end. In formal English, it goes before whom or which. Never put a preposition before who or that. Nunca coloque preposição antes de who ou that.

RegisterExamplePortuguês
informalThe professor (who) I sent the email to never replied.O professor para quem mandei o e-mail nunca respondeu.
formalThe professor to whom I sent the email never replied.O professor a quem enviei o e-mail nunca respondeu.
informalThis is the project (that) I was talking about.
formalThis is the project about which I was talking.

Some of whom, most of which

In non-defining clauses, we can use a quantifier + of whom (people) or of which (things): some of, many of, most of, all of, none of, both of, two of. This structure is elegant and very useful in essays.Nas orações explicativas, podemos usar um quantificador + of whom (pessoas) ou of which (coisas): some of, many of, most of, all of, none of, both of, two of.

  • I have three cousins, two of whom live in Portugal.
  • She applied to twenty universities, most of which accepted her. (Ela se candidatou a vinte universidades, e a maioria delas a aceitou.)
  • The class has 35 students, none of whom failed the course.

Who or whom?

Whom is the formal object form. In conversation, most people use who or leave the pronoun out. But after a preposition and in of whom, only whom is correct: ✗ two of who ✓ two of whom. Mas depois de preposição e em of whom, só whom está correto: ✗ two of who ✓ two of whom.

B2 Which for a whole idea, whose, when and why

A non-defining clause with which can refer to the whole previous sentence, not just to a noun. Brazilians often translate “o que” as what here, but the correct word is which, always after a comma.

  • Lucas passed FUVEST, which surprised everyone.
  • The flight was cancelled, which meant we had to stay another night.
  • Salvador is a city whose history goes back to 1549. (Salvador é uma cidade cuja história remonta a 1549.)
  • That’s the reason why I changed schools.

Whose works for things and places too, not only for people. After the day, the year and the reason, we can use when / why, use that, or leave the pronoun out: the day (when) we met, the reason (why) she left. Depois de the day, the year e the reason, podemos usar when / why, usar that ou omitir o pronome: the day (when) we met (o dia em que nos conhecemos), the reason (why) she left (o motivo pelo qual ela foi embora).

Reduced relative clauses

In defining clauses, we can often drop the pronoun and the verb be, and use an -ing form (active) or a past participle (passive). This makes texts shorter and more natural, and it is very common in vestibular reading texts.

  • People living near the river were evacuated.
  • Most of the songs written by Tom Jobim are still famous.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ The book that I bought it is great. ✓ The book that I bought is great.O pronome relativo já substitui o objeto; não repita com it.

✗ My mother, that is a nurse, works at night. ✓ My mother, who is a nurse, works at night.Nas orações explicativas (com vírgulas), nunca use that.

✗ He failed the exam, what made me sad. ✓ He failed the exam, which made me sad.

✗ The girl which won the prize is my cousin. ✓ The girl who won the prize is my cousin.Para pessoas, use who (ou that nas restritivas), não which.

✗ The teacher that her car was stolen. ✓ The teacher whose car was stolen.Para posse (“cujo”), use whose.
