No Longer, Any Longer, Anymore

Não MaisAdjectives and AdverbsA2

How do you say “não moro mais lá” or “ela não trabalha mais aqui” in English? You have three options: not … anymore, not … any longer and no longer. They mean the same thing, but they go in different places in the sentence, and that is where Brazilian students often make mistakes.Como se diz “não moro mais lá” ou “ela não trabalha mais aqui” em inglês? Você tem três opções: not … anymore, not … any longer e no longer. Elas significam a mesma coisa, mas ocupam lugares diferentes na frase, e é aí que os alunos brasileiros costumam errar.

A2 Not … anymore: the everyday choice

We use not … anymore to say that something was true in the past but is not true now. The verb is negative (don’t, doesn’t, isn’t, can’t…) and anymore goes at the end of the sentence. This is the most common form in conversation.Usamos not … anymore para dizer que algo era verdade no passado, mas não é mais. O verbo fica na negativa (don’t, doesn’t, isn’t, can’t…) e anymore vai no final da frase. É a forma mais comum na conversa.

Subject+negative verb+complement+anymore
  • I don’t live in Piracicaba anymore. I moved to Campinas. (Não moro mais em Piracicaba. Eu me mudei para Campinas.)
  • My brother doesn’t play football anymore. (Meu irmão não joga mais futebol.)
  • This phone isn’t working anymore. (Este celular não está mais funcionando.)
  • We can’t use the old classroom anymore. (Não podemos mais usar a sala antiga.)

Anymore or any more?

In the US, people usually write anymore as one word. In the UK, many people write any more as two words. Both are correct for “não mais” in time. Choose one and use it consistently.Nos Estados Unidos, as pessoas normalmente escrevem anymore junto. No Reino Unido, muita gente escreve any more separado. As duas formas estão corretas para “não mais” no sentido de tempo. Escolha uma e use sempre a mesma.

But for quantity, it is always two words: We don’t have any more milk. (Não temos mais leite.)Mas para quantidade, é sempre separado: We don’t have any more milk. (Não temos mais leite.)

A2 Not … any longer: same meaning, a little more emphasis

Not … any longer works exactly like not … anymore: negative verb, and any longer at the end. It is a little more common when we talk about time and patience, for example when we can’t wait or stay any longer. Not … any longer funciona exatamente como not … anymore: verbo na negativa e any longer no final. É um pouco mais comum quando falamos de tempo e paciência, por exemplo quando não dá para esperar ou ficar mais.

  • I can’t wait any longer. I’m leaving. (Não consigo esperar mais. Vou embora.)
  • Julia doesn’t work at the bank any longer. (A Julia não trabalha mais no banco.)
  • We won’t stay here any longer. It’s too noisy. (Não vamos ficar mais aqui. Está barulhento demais.)

Teacher’s tip

Think of anymore and any longer as “end words”. If your sentence already has a negative verb, put one of them at the very end and you are done.Pense em anymore e any longer como “palavras de final”. Se a sua frase já tem um verbo na negativa, coloque uma delas bem no final e pronto.

A2 No longer: more formal, in the middle

No longer is more formal. It is common in writing, in the news and in official messages. The big difference: the verb is affirmative, because no already makes the sentence negative. No longer goes in the middle of the sentence, in the same place as words like always and never. No longer é mais formal. É comum na escrita, no noticiário e em comunicados oficiais. A grande diferença: o verbo fica na afirmativa, porque o no já deixa a frase negativa. No longer vai no meio da frase, no mesmo lugar de palavras como always e never.

Never two negatives

✗ She doesn’t no longer work here. ✓ She no longer works here.Em português dizemos “não … mais”, com duas palavras negativas. Em inglês padrão, no longer já é negativo, então o verbo fica na afirmativa: nada de don’t ou doesn’t.

A2 Still, anymore and no more

Still is the opposite idea: something continues to be true. It is great to use the two together when you compare the past and the present.Still traz a ideia oposta: algo continua sendo verdade (“ainda”). É ótimo usar os dois juntos quando você compara o passado e o presente.

still (ainda)

  • Is she still your neighbor? No, she isn’t my neighbor anymore. (Ela ainda é sua vizinha? Não, ela não é mais minha vizinha.)

No more is about quantity

Use no more + noun for quantity: There is no more coffee. (Não tem mais café.) Don’t use “no more” for time in standard English: “I don’t work there no more” is informal and not correct in exams.Use no more + substantivo para quantidade: There is no more coffee. (Não tem mais café.) Não use “no more” para tempo no inglês padrão: “I don’t work there no more” é informal e não é aceito em provas.
