“Quando eu chegar, eu te ligo.” Brazilians often say When I will arrive, because Portuguese uses a future form here. In English, after when and other time words, we use a present tense: when I do or when I have done. This post shows you which one to choose and why.“Quando eu chegar, eu te ligo.” Muitos brasileiros dizem When I will arrive, porque o português usa o futuro do subjuntivo nesse caso. Em inglês, depois de when e de outras palavras de tempo, usamos um tempo presente: when I do ou when I have done.
B1+ Present tenses with future meaning
When a sentence talks about the future and has a time clause (a clause that starts with when, as soon as, after, before, until, once…), the verb in the time clause goes in the present, not in the future. The future (will, going to, an imperative) stays in the main clause.Quando uma frase fala do futuro e tem uma oração de tempo (iniciada por when, as soon as, after, before, until, once…), o verbo dessa oração fica no presente, não no futuro. O futuro (will, going to, um imperativo) fica na oração principal.
- I’ll call you when I arrive in Recife. (Eu te ligo quando chegar em Recife.)
- When Paula gets her driver’s license, she’s going to buy a car.
- Turn off the lights before you leave the classroom.
- We’ll start the meeting as soon as the director comes in. (Vamos começar a reunião assim que o diretor entrar.)
Compare the Portuguese and the English structures. Where Portuguese uses the future subjunctive (chegar, terminar, voltar), English uses the simple present.Compare as estruturas em português e em inglês. Onde o português usa o futuro do subjuntivo (chegar, terminar, voltar), o inglês usa o presente simples.
| Português | English | Time word |
|---|---|---|
| Quando eu chegar, te mando mensagem. | When I arrive, I’ll text you. | when |
| Assim que ela terminar, a gente sai. | As soon as she finishes, we’ll leave. | as soon as |
| After you read the email, reply to me. | after |
| Espera aqui até eu voltar. | Wait here until I come back. | until |
| Antes de você decidir, fala comigo. | Before you decide, talk to me. | before |
The same rule with if
Conditional words work in the same way: if, unless, in case, as long as. We say If it rains, we’ll stay home, not “If it will rain”.As palavras condicionais funcionam do mesmo jeito: if, unless, in case, as long as. Dizemos If it rains, we’ll stay home (Se chover, a gente fica em casa), e não “If it will rain”.
B1+ When I do or when I have done?
Both forms refer to the future, but they show a different relationship between the two actions. When I do (present simple) is common when the two actions happen at the same time, or one immediately after the other. When I have done (present perfect) shows that the first action must be complete before the second one starts. When I have done (present perfect) mostra que a primeira ação precisa estar concluída antes de a segunda começar.
when I do
Same time, or one action right after the other.
When I see Marcos, I’ll give him the key.
when I have done
The first action is finished before the second one.A primeira ação termina antes da segunda.
When I’ve read the book, I’ll lend it to you. (Quando eu tiver lido o livro, te empresto.)
Think of the Portuguese “quando eu tiver feito”: it is a good clue for when I have done. In the example with the book, you cannot lend it while you are still reading it, so the present perfect is the natural choice.Pense no “quando eu tiver feito” do português: é uma boa pista para when I have done.
- When you’ve finished the test, you can leave the room.
- When I’ve saved enough money, I’m going to travel to Chile.
- When I phone Bia, I’ll tell her the news.
- When the bell rings, the students go out to the playground.
Same time? Do not use the perfect
✗ When I’ve phoned Bia, I’ll tell her the news. ✓ When I phone Bia, I’ll tell her the news.
The same idea in the past
In past narratives, the pair becomes when I did (one action right after the other) and when I had done (the first action was complete).Em narrativas no passado, o par vira when I did (uma ação logo depois da outra) e when I had done (a primeira ação já estava concluída).
- When the teacher came in, everybody stopped talking.
- When I had checked all the answers, I handed in the test.
B1+ After, as soon as, once, until and by the time
Other time words follow the same rule. With after, as soon as and once, the present simple and the present perfect often mean almost the same, because the words already show sequence. The present perfect just puts more emphasis on completion.
| Time word | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| after | After I’ve had dinner, I’ll do my homework. |
| as soon as | I’ll text you as soon as I’ve landed. | Te mando mensagem assim que eu pousar. |
| once | Once you’ve paid, you’ll receive an email. |
| until | Don’t leave until you’ve signed the form. | Não saia até ter assinado o formulário. |
| before | Check the address before you send it. | Confira o endereço antes de enviar. |
| by the time | By the time we get there, the film will have started. |
- I’ll wait here until you’ve finished your call. (Vou esperar aqui até você terminar a ligação.)
- Once you’ve tried açaí with granola, you’ll never stop eating it.
- By the time Lucas graduates, he will have lived in three countries.
Before and by the time
After before, we normally use the present simple, because the action has not happened yet: before you leave. After by the time, the main clause often takes the future perfect (will have + past participle).Depois de before, normalmente usamos o presente simples, porque a ação ainda não aconteceu: before you leave (antes de você sair). Com by the time, a oração principal costuma ficar no future perfect (will have + particípio).
B1+ When will…? When the rule does not apply
The “no will” rule applies only to time clauses. When when is a question word, or when it introduces the object of a verb like know, ask or tell, we use will normally.
Time clause: no will
It answers “at what moment will the main action happen?”Responde “em que momento a ação principal vai acontecer?”
I’ll tell you when she arrives. (Eu te aviso quando ela chegar.)
Question or object: will is fine
It means “at what time” and is the thing you want to know.
I don’t know when she will arrive. (Não sei quando ela vai chegar.)
- When will the results come out? (Quando vão sair os resultados?)
- Can you ask Ana when she’ll be back from Lisbon?
- I’m not sure if the bank will be open on the holiday.
Teacher’s tip
A quick test: if you can replace when with at what time, the clause is a question or an object, and will is correct. If you cannot, it is a time clause: use the present.
Common Mistakes
Avoid these
✗ When I will arrive, I’ll call you. ✓ When I arrive, I’ll call you.
✗ I’ll wait until you will finish. ✓ I’ll wait until you finish / have finished.Depois de until, nada de will.
✗ After I will finish school, I want to study abroad. ✓ After I finish school, I want to study abroad.“Depois que eu terminar” vira after I finish.
✗ When I’ve phoned Bia, I’ll tell her the news. ✓ When I phone Bia, I’ll tell her the news.
✗ When you will be back? ✓ When will you be back?
