Detectives, doctors and good students do the same thing: they look at the evidence and reach a conclusion. In English, must, can’t, might, may and could show how sure you are about that conclusion, in the present and in the past.Detetives, médicos e bons alunos fazem a mesma coisa: observam as evidências e chegam a uma conclusão. Em inglês, must, can’t, might, may e could mostram o quanto você tem certeza dessa conclusão, no presente e no passado.
B1 Deduction about the present
When we deduce, we are not giving orders or talking about obligation. We are guessing, based on evidence. Must means “I’m almost sure it’s true”, can’t means “I’m almost sure it’s impossible”, and might / may / could mean “it’s possible”.Quando fazemos deduções, não estamos dando ordens nem falando de obrigação. Estamos supondo com base em evidências. Must significa “tenho quase certeza de que é verdade”, can’t significa “tenho quase certeza de que é impossível” e might / may / could significam “é possível”.
| Certainty | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| almost sure: yes | She must be tired. She worked all night. | Ela deve estar cansada. Trabalhou a noite toda. |
| possible | She might / may / could be at the gym. | Ela pode estar na academia. |
| possible: no | She might not / may not know the answer. | Pode ser que ela não saiba a resposta. |
| almost sure: no | She can’t be at home. Her car isn’t there. | Ela não pode estar em casa. O carro dela não está lá. |
- You’ve been travelling for twelve hours. You must be exhausted. (Você está viajando há doze horas. Deve estar exausto.)
- That can’t be Juliana. She’s in Portugal this month. (Aquela não pode ser a Juliana. Ela está em Portugal este mês.)
- I’m not sure where the keys are. They could be in the car. (Não sei onde estão as chaves. Podem estar no carro.)
- The lights are off. They might not be home yet. (As luzes estão apagadas. Talvez eles ainda não tenham chegado.)
The opposite of must is can’t
For deduction, the negative of must is can’t, not mustn’t. ✗ He mustn’t be hungry, he just ate. ✓ He can’t be hungry, he just ate. Mustn’t means prohibition.Na dedução, o contrário de must é can’t, e não mustn’t. ✗ He mustn’t be hungry, he just ate. ✓ He can’t be hungry, he just ate. (Ele não pode estar com fome, acabou de comer.) Mustn’t indica proibição.
Actions in progress
For a deduction about something happening right now, use modal + be + -ing.Para deduzir algo que está acontecendo agora, use modal + be + -ing.
- Gabriel isn’t answering. He must be driving. (O Gabriel não está atendendo. Deve estar dirigindo.)
- You can’t be studying with the TV that loud! (Você não pode estar estudando com a TV nesse volume!)
Deve or deve estar?
Portuguese uses “deve” for both obligation and deduction, so Brazilians sometimes mix them. A simple test: if you can say “deve estar” or “provavelmente”, English needs must be (deduction). If it means “tem que”, it is obligation: must / have to.O português usa “deve” tanto para obrigação quanto para dedução, então é comum misturar. Um teste simples: se dá para dizer “deve estar” ou “provavelmente”, o inglês pede must be (dedução). Se o sentido é “tem que”, é obrigação: must / have to.
B1+ Deduction about the past
To deduce about the past, add have + past participle after the modal. The meanings stay the same: must have (almost sure it happened), might / may / could have (possibly happened), can’t / couldn’t have (almost sure it did not happen).Para fazer deduções sobre o passado, acrescente have + particípio depois do modal. Os sentidos continuam os mesmos: must have (quase certeza de que aconteceu), might / may / could have (talvez tenha acontecido), can’t / couldn’t have (quase certeza de que não aconteceu).
- The ground is wet. It must have rained last night. (O chão está molhado. Deve ter chovido ontem à noite.)
- Marina didn’t reply. She might have missed my message. (A Marina não respondeu. Talvez ela não tenha visto minha mensagem.)
- He can’t have finished the book already. It has 600 pages! (Ele não pode ter terminado o livro já. Tem 600 páginas!)
- They couldn’t have seen us. It was completely dark. (Eles não podem ter nos visto. Estava completamente escuro.)
- She must have been sleeping when I called. (Ela devia estar dormindo quando eu liguei.)
| Form | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| must have + pp | You must have left it at school. | Você deve ter deixado na escola. |
| might / may / could have + pp | The bus could have broken down. | O ônibus pode ter quebrado. |
| can’t / couldn’t have + pp | She can’t have stolen it. | Ela não pode ter roubado. |
| must have been + -ing | They must have been joking. | Eles deviam estar brincando. |
| passive: must have been + pp | The window must have been opened. | A janela deve ter sido aberta. |
could have (deduction)
Perhaps it happened; we don’t know.Talvez tenha acontecido; não sabemos.

could have (unreal past)
It was possible, but it didn’t happen.Era possível, mas não aconteceu.
You could have died! (Você podia ter morrido!)
B2 Expressions for speculation
At B2, you can vary your speculation with expressions that do not use modals. They make your speaking and writing more natural and show exactly how confident you are, which is very useful in debates, essays and the speaking part of international exams. No B2, você pode variar suas suposições com expressões que não usam modais. Elas deixam sua fala e sua escrita mais naturais e mostram exatamente o seu grau de confiança, algo muito útil em debates, redações e na parte oral de exames internacionais.

Making modals stronger or softer
Adverbs adjust the degree of certainty. Might well / may well / could well mean “it’s quite possible”. Can’t possibly and couldn’t possibly make the impossibility stronger. Surely shows that you expect agreement or are surprised.Advérbios ajustam o grau de certeza. Might well / may well / could well significam “é bem possível”. Can’t possibly e couldn’t possibly reforçam a impossibilidade. Surely mostra que você espera concordância ou está surpreso.

Should for expectation
Should and ought to can express a logical expectation: what is probable if everything goes normally. Compare She must be home (I deduce it from evidence) with She should be home by six (that is what I expect).Should e ought to podem expressar uma expectativa lógica: o que é provável se tudo correr normalmente. Compare She must be home (deduzo pelas evidências) com She should be home by six (é o que eu espero: ela deve chegar até as seis).
