Other Ways to Express the Future

Outras Formas de Expressar o FuturoFutureB2

You already know will, going to and the present continuous for the future. At B2 level, English gives you more precise tools: be about to, be on the point of, be due to, be set to and be to. They appear all the time in news, timetables, official notices and university entrance exams.Você já conhece will, going to e o present continuous para o futuro. No nível B2, o inglês oferece ferramentas mais precisas: be about to, be on the point of, be due to, be set to e be to. Elas aparecem o tempo todo em notícias, horários, avisos oficiais e provas de vestibular.

The common pattern

All these forms use the verb be, so be changes with the subject and the tense: I am about to, she was due to, they are set to. Questions and negatives are made with be, never with do or does.Todas essas formas usam o verbo be, então o be muda de acordo com o sujeito e o tempo verbal: I am about to, she was due to, they are set to. Perguntas e negativas são feitas com be, nunca com do ou does.

B2 Be about to and be on the point of

We use be about to + base form for something that will happen very soon, in the next few seconds or minutes. It is the English way of saying “estar prestes a” or “estar quase”.Usamos be about to + verbo na forma base para algo que vai acontecer muito em breve, nos próximos segundos ou minutos. Be on the point of means the same thing, but it is a little more dramatic and is followed by the -ing form, because of is a preposition. Be just about to makes the moment even closer.Be on the point of tem o mesmo sentido, mas é um pouco mais dramático e vem seguido da forma -ing, porque of é uma preposição. Be just about to deixa o momento ainda mais próximo.

No time expressions
