Gerund or Infinitive?

Gerúndio ou Infinitivo?-ing and the InfinitiveA1–B1+

When two verbs come together, the second one takes the gerund (verb + -ing) or the infinitive (to + verb). The first verb decides. There is no single logic behind it, so the best strategy is to learn the most common verbs in each group, and the tables below make that much easier.Quando dois verbos aparecem juntos, o segundo vai para o gerúndio (verbo + -ing) ou para o infinitivo (to + verbo). Quem decide é o primeiro verbo. Não existe uma lógica única, então a melhor estratégia é aprender os verbos mais comuns de cada grupo, e as tabelas abaixo ajudam muito.

A1 Two verbs together: -ing or to?

In Portuguese, the second verb is simply in the infinitive: “gosto de nadar”, “quero viajar”. In English, you need to check the first verb. Some verbs ask for -ing, others ask for to + the base form.Em português, o segundo verbo fica simplesmente no infinitivo: “gosto de nadar”, “quero viajar”. Em inglês, é preciso olhar o primeiro verbo. Alguns pedem -ing, outros pedem to + a forma base.

Gerund (-ing)

The second verb ends in -ing.O segundo verbo termina em -ing.

I enjoy swimming. (Eu gosto de nadar.)

She admitted taking the money. (Ela admitiu ter pegado o dinheiro.)

Infinitive (to + verb)

The second verb comes after to.O segundo verbo vem depois de to.

He promised to help us. (Ele prometeu nos ajudar.)

They decided to leave early. (Eles decidiram sair cedo.)

first verb+verb + -ing|first verb+to + verb
  • I want to travel next year. (Quero viajar no ano que vem.)
  • I’d like to order, please. (Eu gostaria de fazer o pedido, por favor.)
  • I like reading comics. (Eu gosto de ler gibis.)
  • We love dancing at parties. (A gente adora dançar nas festas.)

Go + -ing for activities

For many free-time activities, English uses go + -ing. In Portuguese we usually say “ir” + the activity.Para muitas atividades de lazer, o inglês usa go + -ing. Em português, normalmente dizemos “ir” + a atividade.

Go + -ing for activities

Go shopping, go swimming, go running, go fishing, go dancing: never “go to shopping” or “go to swim”.Go shopping, go swimming, go running, go fishing, go dancing (ir fazer compras, nadar, correr, pescar, dançar): nunca “go to shopping” nem “go to swim”.

A2 Verbs + gerund and verbs + infinitive

Verbs + gerund

After these verbs and expressions, the next verb always takes -ing. Many of them talk about feelings (enjoy, mind, miss) or about actions that have already started or happened (finish, keep, admit, deny).Depois destes verbos e expressões, o verbo seguinte sempre leva -ing. Muitos falam de sentimentos (enjoy, mind, miss) ou de ações que já começaram ou já aconteceram (finish, keep, admit, deny).

Teacher’s tip

Don’t try to memorize both lists in one day. Learn five verbs from each group, write your own sentence with each one, and add more every week.Não tente decorar as duas listas em um dia. Aprenda cinco verbos de cada grupo, escreva uma frase sua com cada um e acrescente mais a cada semana.

B1 Both forms, prepositions and more uses of to

Both forms, same meaning

Like, love, hate, prefer, begin, start, continue and can’t stand accept both forms with no change in meaning. Careful: with would (would like, would love, would prefer, would hate), always use to: I’d love to come.Like, love, hate, prefer, begin, start, continue e can’t stand aceitam as duas formas sem mudar o sentido. Atenção: com would (would like, would love, would prefer, would hate), use sempre to: I’d love to come. (Eu adoraria ir.)

  • I like reading. / I like to read. (Eu gosto de ler.)
  • She started crying. / She started to cry. (Ela começou a chorar.)
  • I can’t stand waiting. / I can’t stand to wait. (Não suporto esperar.)
  • I’d love to come to your party. (Eu adoraria ir à sua festa.)

A British detail

In British English, like + -ing talks more about pleasure (I like swimming.) and like + to about a habit or choice (I like to get up early.).No inglês britânico, like + -ing fala mais de prazer (I like swimming. Gosto de nadar) e like + to, de hábito ou escolha (I like to get up early. Gosto de acordar cedo).

After prepositions: always -ing

After a preposition (about, of, in, for, at, without, before, after…), the verb always takes -ing. In Portuguese we use the infinitive here (“sem dizer”, “antes de sair”), so this is a classic trap.Depois de preposição (about, of, in, for, at, without, before, after…), o verbo vai sempre com -ing. Em português usamos o infinitivo nesses casos (“sem dizer”, “antes de sair”), por isso é uma armadilha clássica.

preposition+verb + -ing
ExpressionPortuguêsExample
be interested inter interesse emI’m interested in learning Spanish.
(Tenho interesse em aprender espanhol.)
be good atser bom emShe’s good at drawing.
(Ela é boa em desenho.)
be tired ofestar cansado deI’m tired of waiting.
(Estou cansada de esperar.)
be worried aboutestar preocupado comHe’s worried about failing.
(Ele está com medo de ser reprovado.)
think aboutpensar emI’m thinking about changing jobs.

thank someone foragradecer porThank you for coming.
(Obrigada por ter vindo.)
apologise forpedir desculpas porI apologise for being late.
(Peço desculpas pelo atraso.)
instead ofem vez deWalk instead of driving.
(Vá a pé em vez de ir de carro.)
withoutsemHe left without saying goodbye.
(Ele saiu sem se despedir.)
be used toestar acostumado aI‘m used to waking up early.
(Estou acostumada a acordar cedo.)

be used to + -ing

“Estar acostumado a”: here to is a preposition, so -ing follows.“Estar acostumado a”: aqui o to é preposição, então vem -ing.

I’m used to getting up early. (Estou acostumada a acordar cedo.)

used to + base verb

“Costumava”: a past habit, followed by the base form.“Costumava”: um hábito do passado, seguido da forma base.

I used to get up early. (Eu costumava acordar cedo.)

More uses of the infinitive

The infinitive also appears after adjectives, to show purpose (the Portuguese “para”), with too and enough, and when we report orders and requests.O infinitivo também aparece depois de adjetivos, para indicar finalidade (o “para” do português), com too e enough e quando relatamos ordens e pedidos.

UseExamplePortuguês
after adjectivesWe’re ready to go.Estamos prontos para ir.
after adjectivesIt’s nice to meet you.Prazer em conhecer você.
after adjectivesIt isn’t hard for me to learn languages.Não é difícil para mim aprender idiomas.
purpose (para)I went to London to study English.Fui a Londres para estudar inglês.
purpose (para)We used repellent to avoid mosquito bites.Usamos repelente para evitar picadas de mosquito.
with tooThey were too late to catch the plane.Eles chegaram tarde demais para pegar o avião.
with enoughShe’s old enough to drive.Ela tem idade suficiente para dirigir.
reporting ordersThe manager told us to be there at 2:15.O gerente nos disse para estarmos lá às 14h15.
reporting requestsShe asked us not to call before dinner.Ela nos pediu para não ligar antes do jantar.

Negative infinitive

To make an infinitive negative, put not before to: She asked us not to call. The same goes for the gerund: He admitted not going.Para deixar o infinitivo negativo, coloque not antes de to: She asked us not to call. (Ela nos pediu para não ligar.) O mesmo vale para o gerúndio: He admitted not going. (Ele admitiu que não foi.)

Make and let: no “to”

After make and let + person, the verb stays in the base form: My mum made me clean my room. Let me help you. ✗ Let me to help you.Depois de make e let + pessoa, o verbo fica na forma base: My mum made me clean my room. (Minha mãe me fez arrumar o quarto.) Let me help you. (Deixa eu te ajudar.) ✗ Let me to help you.

B1+ Change of meaning, gerund as subject and style

Both forms, different meaning

A few verbs accept both forms, but the meaning changes completely. These are favourites in exams and entrance tests.Alguns verbos aceitam as duas formas, mas o sentido muda completamente. Eles são os preferidos das provas e dos vestibulares.

Verb+ -ing+ to
stopShe stopped smoking. (parou de fumar)She stopped to smoke. (parou para fumar)
rememberI remember locking the door. (lembro de ter trancado)Remember to lock the door. (lembre-se de trancar)
forgetI’ll never forget meeting you. (nunca vou esquecer o dia em que te conheci)Don’t forget to call me. (não se esqueça de me ligar)
tryTry drinking some tea. (experimente, como teste)I tried to open the door. (tentei, me esforcei)
regretI regret saying that. (me arrependo de ter dito)We regret to inform you… (lamentamos informar)

A tip to remember

With remember, forget and regret: with -ing, the action happens before (you remember something you already did). With to, the action comes after (you need to remember to do it).Com remember, forget e regret: com -ing, a ação acontece antes (você se lembra de algo que já fez). Com to, a ação vem depois (você precisa se lembrar de fazer).

The gerund as a subject

The gerund can be the subject of a sentence, just like a noun. Portuguese uses the infinitive here (“Nadar faz bem”), but English prefers -ing.O gerúndio pode ser o sujeito da frase, como um substantivo. O português usa o infinitivo nesse caso (“Nadar faz bem”), mas o inglês prefere o -ing.

  • Swimming is good for your health. (Nadar faz bem à saúde.)
  • Learning a language takes time. (Aprender um idioma leva tempo.)
  • Eating too much sugar is bad for your teeth. (Comer muito açúcar faz mal aos dentes.)
  • Reading before bed helps me relax. (Ler antes de dormir me ajuda a relaxar.)

Writing tip: be consistent

In lists, use all gerunds or all infinitives. Mixing the two forms in the same list sounds careless in a composition.Em listas, use todos no gerúndio ou todos no infinitivo. Misturar as duas formas na mesma lista soa descuidado em uma redação.

  • On holiday, I like relaxing at home, reading and spending time with my family. (Nas férias, gosto de relaxar em casa, ler e passar tempo com a minha família.)
  • I prefer to relax at home, read and spend time with my family. (Prefiro relaxar em casa, ler e passar tempo com a família.)

Common Mistakes

Avoid these
