Costumes and activities

A costume is the special clothes you wear to look like someone else. Don’t confuse it with custom (a tradition). On Halloween night, children go trick-or-treating: they knock on doors and say Trick or treat! The neighbours give them candy. The idea is: give me a treat, or I will play a trick on you.

The history of Halloween

Halloween began about 2,000 years ago with Samhain (pronounced “SOW-in”), a Celtic festival in what is now Ireland, the UK and northern France. The Celts believed that on that night the world of the dead was very close, so they lit bonfires and wore costumes to scare spirits away.O Halloween começou há cerca de 2.000 anos com o Samhain (pronuncia-se “SÁU-in”), um festival celta onde hoje ficam a Irlanda, o Reino Unido e o norte da França.

Later, the Church made 1 November All Saints’ Day, also called All Hallows. The evening before was All Hallows’ Eve, and the name became Halloween. In the 19th century, Irish and Scottish immigrants took the tradition to the United States, where it became the big commercial holiday we know today. A noite anterior era a All Hallows’ Eve, e o nome virou Halloween.

Turnips before pumpkins

In Ireland and Scotland, people carved faces into turnips and potatoes. In America, pumpkins were bigger and easier to carve, so the jack-o’-lantern became orange. The name comes from an Irish legend about Stingy Jack, a man who tricked the devil and had to walk the earth with only a coal inside a turnip to light his way.
