The Present Continuous describes actions in progress: what is happening now, at this moment, or around this period of time. It is the English version of “estou fazendo”, and it is built with the verb to be plus a verb ending in -ing. Let’s see the form, the spelling, the uses and the difference from the Present Simple.O Present Continuous descreve ações em andamento: o que está acontecendo agora, neste momento, ou nesta fase. É a versão em inglês do “estou fazendo”, e é formado com o verbo to be mais um verbo terminado em -ing. Vamos ver a forma, a ortografia, os usos e a diferença em relação ao Present Simple.
A1 Affirmative: am / is / are + -ing
The Present Continuous has two parts: the correct form of to be (am, is, are) and the main verb with -ing. Both parts are necessary. In speech we normally use contractions: I’m, she’s, they’re.O Present Continuous tem duas partes: a forma certa de to be (am, is, are) e o verbo principal com -ing. As duas partes são obrigatórias. Na fala normalmente usamos contrações: I’m, she’s, they’re.
- I’m reading a great book. (Estou lendo um livro ótimo.)
- Mariana is talking to the principal. (A Mariana está falando com a diretora.)
- We’re waiting for the bus. (Estamos esperando o ônibus.)
- It’s raining in São Paulo. (Está chovendo em São Paulo.)
Spelling rules for -ing
Most verbs just add -ing. Verbs ending in a silent -e lose the e. Short verbs ending in one vowel + one consonant double the last consonant. Verbs ending in -ie change to -ying.A maioria dos verbos só recebe -ing. Verbos terminados em -e mudo perdem o e. Verbos curtos terminados em uma vogal + uma consoante dobram a última consoante. Verbos terminados em -ie mudam para -ying.
| Rule | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| most verbs: + ing | play → playing, study → studying | jogando, estudando |
| silent -e: drop the e | write → writing, dance → dancing | escrevendo, dançando |
| vowel + consonant: double it | run → running, swim → swimming | correndo, nadando |
| -ie → -ying | lie → lying, die → dying | mentindo / deitado, morrendo |
Teacher’s tip
Don’t double the consonant in verbs ending in -w, -x or -y: snowing, fixing, playing. And verbs with two vowels before the last consonant don’t double: eating, raining, cooking.Não dobre a consoante de verbos terminados em -w, -x ou -y: snowing, fixing, playing. E verbos com duas vogais antes da última consoante também não dobram: eating, raining, cooking.
A1 Negative and questions
Because the Present Continuous uses the verb to be, negatives and questions work exactly like to be. For the negative, add not after am, is, are. For questions, put am, is, are before the subject. Never use do or does here.Como o Present Continuous usa o verbo to be, a negativa e as perguntas funcionam exatamente como no to be. Na negativa, coloque not depois de am, is, are. Nas perguntas, coloque am, is, are antes do sujeito. Nunca use do ou does aqui.
| Form | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| Negative | I‘m not sleeping. | Não estou dormindo. |

A1 Uses: now and around now
We use the Present Continuous for actions happening at the moment of speaking, and also for temporary situations around this period, even if they are not happening exactly now. Typical time expressions are now, right now, at the moment, today, this week and these days.Usamos o Present Continuous para ações que acontecem no momento da fala e também para situações temporárias desta fase, mesmo que não estejam acontecendo exatamente agora.
