Real life does not always fit into neat time boxes. A decision in the past can change your life today, and who you are today can explain what you did yesterday. Mixed conditionals combine the second and third conditionals to express exactly that, and at B2 you will also learn elegant alternatives to if.A vida real nem sempre cabe em caixinhas de tempo bem definidas.
B2 Past condition, present result
The most common mixed conditional imagines a different past and shows its result in the present. The if clause is from the third conditional (had + past participle) and the main clause is from the second (would + base verb). Words like now, today and still are a good clue.
- If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now. (Se eu tivesse estudado medicina, seria médica hoje.)
- If Caio hadn’t missed the bus, he would be here with us.
- If we had bought the apartment in 2015, we wouldn’t pay rent today.
- If you had taken the medicine, you’d feel better now. (Se você tivesse tomado o remédio, estaria se sentindo melhor agora.)
| Type | Example | Português | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| third | If I had taken the job, I would have moved to Curitiba. | past → past |
| mixed | If I had taken the job, I would live in Curitiba now. | past → present |
| second | If I lived in Curitiba, I would need warmer clothes. | present → present |
Teacher’s tip
Analyse each clause separately. Ask: “Is this part about the past or about now?” Then choose the form for that time. That is all a mixed conditional is.Analise cada oração separadamente.
B2 Present condition, past result
The second type goes the other way: a situation that is not true in general or now (if + past simple) explains a past result (would have + past participle). It often describes personality, abilities or permanent facts.O segundo tipo vai no sentido contrário: uma situação que não é verdadeira em geral ou agora (if + past simple) explica um resultado no passado (would have + particípio). Muitas vezes descreve personalidade, habilidades ou fatos permanentes.
- If Marina spoke Spanish, she would have got the job in Buenos Aires.
- If he weren’t so shy, he would have asked her to dance last night.
- If I didn’t trust you, I wouldn’t have lent you my car.
If I were you, I wouldn’t have done it
This famous sentence belongs to the same type. If I were you is a permanent imaginary situation (I am never you), and the result is a past action. It is a direct way to criticize or disagree with a decision someone has already made.Essa frase famosa pertence ao mesmo tipo. If I were you é uma situação imaginária permanente (eu nunca sou você), e o resultado é uma ação passada.

If I were you, I wouldn’t have signed the contract.
B2 Alternatives to if
Many words and expressions can replace if and make your English more precise. They follow the same tense rules as if: no will or would in the condition clause.
|---|---|---|
| unless (= if not) | You can’t enter unless you have a ticket. |
| as long as / so long as | You can borrow it as long as you return it on Friday. |

| but for / without | But for your help, I would have failed. |
In case is not if
✗ Take an umbrella if it rains. (when you mean “por precaução”) ✓ Take an umbrella in case it rains.
Unless and the negative
Unless already contains a negative idea, so the verb after it is normally affirmative: I won’t go unless you come with me, not “unless you don’t come”.Unless já tem ideia negativa, então o verbo depois dele normalmente fica no afirmativo: I won’t go unless you come with me (Eu não vou a menos que você venha comigo), e não “unless you don’t come”.
B2 Inversion: had I known, were I, should you
In formal English, we can drop if and put the auxiliary before the subject. This is common in formal emails, essays, contracts and exam texts. Only three auxiliaries do this: had, were and should. No inglês formal, podemos tirar o if e colocar o auxiliar antes do sujeito. Só três auxiliares fazem isso: had, were e should.
| Standard form | Inversion | Português |
|---|---|---|
| If I had known, I would have called. | Had I known, I would have called. | Se eu soubesse, teria ligado. |
| If I were in charge, I would change the rules. | Were I in charge, I would change the rules. | Se eu estivesse no comando, mudaria as regras. |
| If you need any help, please contact us. | Should you need any help, please contact us. |
| If it hadn’t been for the rain, we would have won. | Had it not been for the rain, we would have won. | Não fosse a chuva, teríamos ganhado. |

Negative inversion
In the negative, not comes after the subject and is never contracted: Had I not seen the message…, not “Hadn’t I seen the message…”. Notice that inversion works in mixed conditionals too: Had I saved more, I wouldn’t be worried now.Na negativa, o not vem depois do sujeito e nunca é contraído: Had I not seen the message… I saved more, I wouldn’t be worried now.
Common Mistakes
Avoid these
✗ If I had studied medicine, I would have been a doctor now. ✓ If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.Com now, o resultado é presente: use would + verbo na forma base.
✗ If I would be you, I wouldn’t have done it. ✓ If I were you, I wouldn’t have done it.Nunca use would na oração da condição.
✗ Hadn’t I seen the message, I would have missed the class. ✓ Had I not seen the message, I would have missed the class.
✗ I won’t go unless you don’t come with me. ✓ I won’t go unless you come with me.Unless já significa “a menos que / se não”.
