This and it can both become “isto”, “isso” or “ele / ela” in Portuguese, so many Brazilian students mix them up. The rule is simple: we use this to point to something and present it for the first time, and it to talk about something we already know.
A1 This: pointing and presenting
We use this for a thing or a person that is near us, here, now. It is like pointing with your finger: “this one here”. We often use it to show something or to introduce a person.
- This is my new phone. (Este é o meu celular novo.)
- Mom, this is Gabriel. He’s in my class. (Mãe, este é o Gabriel. Ele é da minha turma.)
- This is our classroom. (Esta é a nossa sala de aula.)
- Hello, this is Fernanda. Can I speak to Paula? (Alô, aqui é a Fernanda. Posso falar com a Paula?)
This + noun
This can also come before a noun: this book, this street, this week. It can never do that. “It book” does not exist. This também pode vir antes de um substantivo: this book (este livro), this street (esta rua), this week (esta semana). It nunca faz isso. “It book” não existe.
- I love this song! (Eu amo esta música!)
- We have a test this Friday. (Temos prova nesta sexta.)
This, that, these, those
This is for one thing near you. For one thing far away, use that. For plurals, use these (near) and those (far). The plural of it is they. No plural, use these (perto) e those (longe). O plural de it é they.
A1 It: something we already know
It is a subject or object pronoun. It replaces a thing or an animal that we mentioned before, so we don’t repeat the noun. In Portuguese we often just drop the subject (“É ótimo”), but in English every sentence needs a subject. That is why it is so important.
- I have a cat. It’s black and white. (Eu tenho um gato. Ele é preto e branco.)
- Look at my new backpack. Do you like it? (Olha a minha mochila nova. Você gostou?)
- We went to a pizzeria in Piracicaba. It was great. (Fomos a uma pizzaria em Piracicaba. Foi ótimo.)
- Where’s my pen? I can’t find it. (Cadê a minha caneta? Não consigo achar.)
It for weather, time, dates and distance
We also use it as an “empty” subject for the weather, the time, the day and distances. Here, this is always wrong. Nesses casos, this está sempre errado.
| Topic | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| weather | It’s raining. | Está chovendo. |
| time | It’s seven o’clock. | São sete horas. |
| day / date | It’s Monday. It’s May 5th. | É segunda. É dia 5 de maio. |
| distance | It’s 10 km to the beach. | São 10 km até a praia. |
| situation | It’s late. Let’s go. | Está tarde. Vamos. |
Never drop it
✗ Is very hot today. ✓ It’s very hot today. Em inglês, o it é obrigatório.
A1 This or it? First and second mention
Think of a conversation in two steps. First, we point and present the thing with this. After that, the thing is known, so we use it.Pense numa conversa em dois passos. Primeiro, apontamos e apresentamos a coisa com this.
this = new, pointing
We show something or someone for the first time.Mostramos algo ou alguém pela primeira vez.
This is my house. (Esta é a minha casa.)
it = known, no pointing
We continue talking about the same thing.Continuamos falando da mesma coisa.
It’s small, but it’s cozy. (Ela é pequena, mas é aconchegante.)
- This is my brother’s car. It’s very old. (Este é o carro do meu irmão. Ele é bem velho.)
- This is a photo of Ubatuba. It’s my favorite beach. (Esta é uma foto de Ubatuba. É a minha praia favorita.)
- Try this cake. It’s delicious! (Experimenta este bolo. Está delicioso!)
Teacher’s tip
Ask yourself: “Am I pointing at it or showing it?” If yes, use this. If you are just continuing the conversation, use it. And people are never it: we say he or she. Se sim, use this. E pessoas nunca são it: dizemos he ou she.
A1 Questions and short answers
In questions, we use this to ask about something we are pointing at. In the answer, the thing is already known, so we use it. This is the most common mistake: answering “Yes, this is.”Nas perguntas, usamos this para perguntar sobre algo que estamos apontando. Este é o erro mais comum: responder “Yes, this is.”
