Phrasal verbs like wake up, turn off and look for are everywhere in real English. Learning the meaning is only half the job: you also need to know where the object goes. This post shows the three main types and the golden rule for pronouns.Phrasal verbs como wake up, turn off e look for estão por toda parte no inglês real. Aprender o significado é só metade do trabalho: você também precisa saber onde fica o objeto. Este post mostra os três tipos principais e a regra de ouro dos pronomes.
A2 What is a phrasal verb?
A phrasal verb is a verb + particle (a small word like up, down, on, off, in, out, away, back, for, after). Together they often have a new meaning: give up is not “dar para cima”, it means “desistir”.Um phrasal verb é um verbo + partícula (uma palavrinha como up, down, on, off, in, out, away, back, for, after). Juntos, muitas vezes ganham um significado novo: give up não é “dar para cima”, significa “desistir”.

- Please turn off your phones during the test. (Por favor, desliguem os celulares durante a prova.)
- My grandmother looks after my little brother. (Minha avó cuida do meu irmão mais novo.)
To use a phrasal verb correctly, ask two questions: 1) Does it take an object? 2) If it does, can the object go between the verb and the particle? The answers give us three types.Para usar um phrasal verb corretamente, faça duas perguntas: 1) Ele tem objeto? 2) Se tem, o objeto pode ficar entre o verbo e a partícula? As respostas nos dão três tipos.
| Type | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| intransitive (no object) | The plane took off. | O avião decolou. |
| transitive separable | Turn the TV off. | Desliga a TV. |
| transitive inseparable | I’m looking for my keys. | Estou procurando minhas chaves. |
A2 Intransitive phrasal verbs: no object
Intransitive phrasal verbs have no object. The verb and the particle stay together, and nothing comes after them except time, place or other extra information.Phrasal verbs intransitivos não têm objeto. O verbo e a partícula ficam juntos, e depois deles só vem informação extra, como tempo ou lugar.
- Hurry up! The bus is leaving. (Anda logo! O ônibus está saindo.)
- My car broke down on the way to Campinas. (Meu carro quebrou no caminho para Campinas.)
- Come in and sit down, please. (Entre e sente-se, por favor.)

Common intransitive phrasal verbs
get up (levantar-se), wake up (acordar), go out (sair), come back (voltar), grow up (crescer), sit down (sentar-se), break down (quebrar, parar de funcionar), take off (decolar).Esses verbos não pedem objeto: você não “levanta alguma coisa” com get up, você mesmo se levanta.
A2 Separable phrasal verbs
Many transitive phrasal verbs are separable. When the object is a noun, it can go after the particle or between the verb and the particle. Both positions are correct and mean the same.Muitos phrasal verbs transitivos são separáveis. Quando o objeto é um substantivo, ele pode vir depois da partícula ou entre o verbo e a partícula. As duas posições estão corretas e significam a mesma coisa.
verb + particle + noun
The object comes at the end.O objeto vem no final.
Put on your jacket. (Coloca a jaqueta.)
verb + noun + particle
The object goes in the middle.O objeto vai no meio.
Put your jacket on. (Coloca a jaqueta.)

| Separable verb | Português | Example |
|---|---|---|

| pick up | pegar, buscar | Pick up your toys. |
| give back | devolver | Give my pen back. |
| try on | experimentar (roupa) | Try the shirt on. |

A2 The golden rule: pronouns go in the middle
With separable phrasal verbs, an object pronoun (it, them, him, her, me, us, you) must go between the verb and the particle. It can never go at the end. This is the mistake Brazilian students make most often.Com phrasal verbs separáveis, o pronome objeto (it, them, him, her, me, us, you) precisa ficar entre o verbo e a partícula. Ele nunca pode ficar no final. Esse é o erro que os alunos brasileiros mais cometem.
- The TV is too loud. Turn it down, please. (A TV está alta demais. Abaixa, por favor.)
- These are new jeans. Can I try them on? (Essa calça é nova. Posso experimentar?)
- Lucas is at the airport. I’m going to pick him up. (O Lucas está no aeroporto. Vou buscá-lo.)
Noun or pronoun?
Noun: Turn off the light ✓ Turn the light off ✓. Pronoun: Turn it off ✓ Turn off it ✗.Com substantivo, as duas posições funcionam. Com pronome, só a posição do meio está certa.
Teacher’s tip
When the noun object is long, put it at the end: Pick up the book that is on the kitchen table sounds better than putting all those words in the middle.Quando o objeto é longo, coloque-o no final: Pick up the book that is on the kitchen table (Pega o livro que está na mesa da cozinha) soa melhor do que colocar todas essas palavras no meio.
A2 Inseparable phrasal verbs
Some transitive phrasal verbs are inseparable: the object always comes after the particle, even when it is a pronoun. Many of them use particles like for, after, into and with. Learn these in a list.Alguns phrasal verbs transitivos são inseparáveis: o objeto sempre vem depois da partícula, mesmo quando é pronome. Muitos deles usam partículas como for, after, into e with. Turn it on. (Liga.)
Inseparable

How do I know which type?
A good dictionary shows it. If you see turn sth off, the verb is separable. If you see look after sb, it is inseparable. Write new phrasal verbs in your notebook the same way.Um bom dicionário mostra. Se aparece turn sth off, o verbo é separável. Se aparece look after sb, é inseparável. Anote os phrasal verbs novos no caderno do mesmo jeito.
