Used To and Would: Past Habits

Used To e Would: Hábitos no PassadoPast TensesA2–B2

When we talk about how life was in the past, English gives us two special tools: used to and would. Both describe past habits that are no longer true, but they don’t work in exactly the same way. In this lesson you will learn the form, the difference between them and the traps that confuse Brazilian learners, like be used to and get used to.Quando falamos de como a vida era no passado, o inglês nos dá duas ferramentas especiais: used to e would. Nesta aula você vai aprender a estrutura, a diferença entre elas e as armadilhas que confundem os brasileiros, como be used to e get used to.

A2 Used to: form and basic use

We use used to + base verb for habits, repeated actions and states that were true in the past but are not true now. The idea is always a contrast with the present: it happened before, it doesn’t happen anymore.

Subject+used to+base verb

The form is the same for all subjects: I, you, he, she, we and they all take used to. In Portuguese, we usually translate it with the imperfect tense (eu jogava, ela morava) or with “costumava”.A forma é igual para todas as pessoas: I, you, he, she, we e they usam used to.

  • I used to play football every afternoon after school.
  • My grandparents used to live on a farm near Piracicaba. (Meus avós moravam numa fazenda perto de Piracicaba.)
  • Lucas used to have long hair. (O Lucas tinha cabelo comprido.)
  • We used to go to the beach every January.

Negative and questions

In negatives and questions we use did, so the verb loses the “d”: didn’t use to and Did you use to…? This is the same rule as any other verb in the past simple: after did, the verb goes back to its base form.Na negativa e na pergunta usamos did, então o verbo perde o “d”: didn’t use to e Did you use to…?

AffirmativeShe used to work in a bank.Ela trabalhava num banco.
NegativeShe didn’t use to like coffee.Ela não gostava de café.
QuestionDid you use to walk to school?Você ia a pé para a escola?
Short answerYes, I did. / No, I didn’t.Ia, sim. / Não, não ia.

Teacher’s tip

In speech, “used to” and “use to” sound exactly the same: /ˈjuːstə/. The “s” sounds like an “s”, not a “z”. So the spelling matters only when you write.Na fala, “used to” e “use to” têm exatamente o mesmo som: /ˈjuːstə/.

Watch out: “costumo” is not “use to”

Used to exists only in the past. For present habits, use the present simple with usually. ✗ I use to wake up at six. ✓ I usually wake up at six.Used to só existe no passado. “Eu costumo acordar às seis” é “I usually wake up at six”, nunca “I use to”.

B1 Would for past habits

We can also use would + base verb to talk about repeated actions in the past. It’s very common in stories and memories, especially when we describe a routine. The contraction is ‘d: I’d, she’d, we’d.Também podemos usar would + verbo base para falar de ações repetidas no passado. A contração é ‘d: I’d, she’d, we’d.

Subject+would (‘d)+base verb
  • Every Sunday, my father would make a big barbecue for the whole family.
  • When I was a child, I’d spend hours reading comics.
  • After class, we would sit in the square and talk.

Actions yes, states no

Here is the key rule: would works only with repeated actions. It cannot describe past states, such as where you lived, what you had, what you liked or what you were. For states, use used to or the past simple. Para estados, use used to ou o passado simples.

Used to

Actions and states.Ações e estados.

I used to live in Santos. (Eu morava em Santos.)

I used to swim every day. (Eu nadava todo dia.)

Would

Repeated actions only.Somente ações repetidas.

I would swim every day. (Eu nadava todo dia.)

I would live in Santos. (✗ estado, não use would)

Verb typeExampleWould OK?
actionWe used to / would play in the street.sim
state: beHe used to be very shy.não
state: haveThey used to have a dog.não
state: like, love, knowI used to love cartoons.não

Used to or past simple?

For something that happened only once, use the past simple, not used to or would. Used to also doesn’t combine with an exact number of times or a precise duration. In these cases, the past simple is the natural choice.Para algo que aconteceu uma vez só, use o passado simples, e não used to ou would. Used to também não combina com um número exato de vezes nem com uma duração precisa. Nesses casos, o passado simples é a escolha natural.

  • I went to Buenos Aires in 2019. (Fui para Buenos Aires em 2019. Uma vez só: passado simples.)
  • She lived in Curitiba for six years. (Ela morou em Curitiba por seis anos. Duração exata: passado simples.)
  • We visited my aunt three times last year. (Visitamos minha tia três vezes no ano passado.)

B1+ Used to, be used to, get used to

These three look almost the same, but they mean very different things. Used to + base verb is a past habit. Be used to + -ing or noun means “to be accustomed to” something. Get used to + -ing or noun describes the process of becoming accustomed. As três parecem quase iguais, mas têm significados bem diferentes. Used to + verbo base é hábito do passado. Be used to + -ing ou substantivo significa “estar acostumado” com algo. Get used to + -ing ou substantivo descreve o processo de se acostumar.

StructureMeaningExamplePortuguês
used to + verbpast habitI used to work at night.Eu trabalhava à noite.
be used to + -ingaccustomedI‘m used to working at night.Estou acostumado a trabalhar à noite.
get used to + -ingbecoming accustomedI‘m getting used to working at night.Estou me acostumando a trabalhar à noite.

In be used to and get used to, the word “to” is a preposition, not part of an infinitive. That’s why the next verb takes -ing. Be and get can change tense freely: I wasn’t used to, she’ll get used to, have you got used to…?Em be used to e get used to, o “to” é preposição, e não parte de um infinitivo. Be e get podem mudar de tempo à vontade: I wasn’t used to, she’ll get used to, have you got used to…?

  • Ana is used to driving on busy roads in São Paulo.
  • When I moved to London, I wasn’t used to the cold.
  • Don’t worry, you’ll get used to the new timetable.

Quick test

Can you replace it with “accustomed to”? Then it’s be/get used to, and the verb needs -ing. Is it a past habit that stopped? Then it’s used to + base verb.Dá para trocar por “acostumado a”? Então é be/get used to, e o verbo precisa de -ing. É um hábito do passado que acabou? Então é used to + verbo base.

B2 Style, nuance and present habits

Combining used to and would in a story

Good writers often open a memory with used to to set the scene and then continue with would to avoid repetition. Would sounds more nostalgic and literary, but it needs a clear past context first. Without that context, “I would play football” sounds like a conditional (eu jogaria).Bons escritores costumam abrir uma lembrança com used to para situar o leitor e depois continuar com would para não repetir. Sem esse contexto, “I would play football” parece condicional (eu jogaria).

Example paragraph

When I was ten, we used to spend every July at my grandmother’s house in Minas. She would wake us up early, and we’d help her make pão de queijo. In the afternoons, my cousins and I would ride our bikes until it got dark.

Negatives, questions and register

Never used to is a common, natural alternative to didn’t use to. In very formal writing in the UK you may see used not to, but it’s rare in everyday English. Would is unusual in negative habit sentences and in questions about habits; prefer used to there.Never used to é uma alternativa comum e natural a didn’t use to. Em textos muito formais no Reino Unido, aparece used not to, mas é raro no inglês do dia a dia. Would é pouco comum em frases negativas e perguntas sobre hábitos; nesses casos, prefira used to.

  • My brother never used to eat vegetables. (Meu irmão nunca comia verdura.)
  • There used to be a cinema on this corner. (Tinha um cinema nesta esquina.)

Will and would for typical behaviour

At an advanced level, will describes typical behaviour in the present, and would does the same in the past. When will or would is stressed in speech, it shows irritation with someone’s annoying habit.Num nível avançado, will descreve um comportamento típico no presente, e would faz o mesmo no passado. Quando will ou would recebe ênfase na fala, demonstra irritação com um hábito chato de alguém.

  • My cat will sit by the door for hours, waiting for me. (Meu gato fica horas sentado na porta me esperando.)
  • He would always leave his dirty socks on the floor! (Ele sempre deixava as meias sujas no chão! Irritação.)
  • She would say that, wouldn’t she? She never agrees with me. (Claro que ela ia dizer isso, né? Ela nunca concorda comigo.)

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ I use to study at night. ✓ I usually study at night.Para hábito no presente (“costumo”), use usually + presente simples.

✗ Did you used to live here? ✓ Did you use to live here?

✗ We would have a big house. ✓ We used to have a big house.Would não serve para estados como have, be, like e live.

✗ I’m used to wake up early. ✓ I’m used to waking up early.Em be used to, o “to” é preposição, então o verbo vai para -ing.

✗ I used to live in Recife for ten years. ✓ I lived in Recife for ten years.Com duração exata, use o passado simples.
