Will and Shall

Will e ShallFutureA1

Will is one of the easiest ways to talk about the future in English: it’s the same for every person and it never changes. In this lesson you will learn how to make sentences, negatives and questions with will, when to use it, and how shall helps you make offers and suggestions.

A1 Affirmative

To make a sentence with will, put will after the subject and then the verb in its base form, without “to”. There is no “s” for he, she or it. In speech, we almost always use the contraction ‘ll.Para formar uma frase com will, coloque will depois do sujeito e, em seguida, o verbo na forma base, sem “to”. Não tem “s” para he, she ou it. Na fala, quase sempre usamos a contração ‘ll.

Subject+will (‘ll)+base verb

I will helpI‘ll helpeu vou ajudar / eu ajudo
You will like itYou‘ll like itvocê vai gostar
He will callHe‘ll callele vai ligar
She will winShe‘ll winela vai ganhar
It will rainIt‘ll rainvai chover
We will be thereWe‘ll be therevamos estar lá
They will arriveThey‘ll arriveeles vão chegar
  • I’ll see you tomorrow. (Te vejo amanhã.)
  • My mother will be 60 next year. (Minha mãe vai fazer 60 anos no ano que vem.)
  • You’ll love Florianópolis. (Você vai amar Florianópolis.)

Teacher’s tip

“Will be 60” is the natural way to say an age in the future. In English, we are an age; we don’t have it. ✗ She will have 60 years. ✓ She will be 60.“Will be 60” é a forma natural de dizer uma idade no futuro. Nunca diga “She will have 60 years”.

A1 Negative and questions

For the negative, add not after will. The short form is won’t, and it’s the one we use most. For questions, put will before the subject. Don’t use do or does with will.Na negativa, acrescente not depois de will. A forma curta é won’t, e é a mais usada. Nas perguntas, coloque will antes do sujeito. Não use do nem does com will.

Subject+won’t+base verb
Will+subject+base verb+?
  • I won’t be late, I promise. (Não vou me atrasar, prometo.)
  • Don’t worry, the test won’t be difficult.
  • Will you come to my birthday party? (Você vai à minha festa de aniversário?)
  • Will it be hot in Manaus in July? (Vai estar calor em Manaus em julho?)

Short answers use will or won’t, not the main verb: “Will you help me?” “Yes, I will.” / “No, I won’t.” Don’t contract in a positive short answer: ✗ Yes, I’ll.Nas respostas curtas usamos will ou won’t, e não o verbo principal: “Will you help me?” “Yes, I will.” / “No, I won’t.”

Pronunciation

Won’t sounds like /wəʊnt/, with an “o” sound. Want sounds like /wɒnt/. Say them carefully: “I won’t go” (não vou) is very different from “I want to go” (quero ir).Won’t soa como /wəʊnt/, com som de “ôu”. Want soa como /wɒnt/. Pronuncie com cuidado: “I won’t go” (não vou) é bem diferente de “I want to go” (quero ir).

A1 When we use will

Will is not used for every future idea. At this level, remember four main uses: decisions we make at the moment of speaking, offers, promises and predictions based on our opinion.

instant decisionI’m thirsty. I‘ll have some water.Estou com sede. Vou tomar uma água.
offerThat bag looks heavy. I‘ll carry it.Essa bolsa parece pesada. Eu levo.
promiseI‘ll call you tonight.Eu te ligo hoje à noite.
prediction (opinion)I think Brazil will win.Acho que o Brasil vai ganhar.
requestWill you open the window, please?Você pode abrir a janela, por favor?

For predictions, we often use I think, probably and maybe with will. Probably goes after will in affirmative sentences, but before won’t in negatives.

  • It will probably rain this afternoon. (Provavelmente vai chover hoje à tarde.)
  • She probably won’t come to the meeting. (Ela provavelmente não vem para a reunião.)
  • I don’t think the bus will be late. (Acho que o ônibus não vai atrasar.)

Rule

With think, put the negative in “think”: “I don’t think he’ll come” is more natural than “I think he won’t come”.Com think, a negativa fica em “think”: “I don’t think he’ll come” (acho que ele não vem) é mais natural do que “I think he won’t come”.

A1 Shall for offers and suggestions

Today, shall is used mainly in questions with I and we. “Shall I…?” is an offer: you ask if the other person wants your help. “Shall we…?” is a suggestion: you invite someone to do something with you.Hoje, shall é usado principalmente em perguntas com I e we. “Shall I…?” “Shall we…?”

Shall+I / we+base verb+?
  • Shall I open the window? (Quer que eu abra a janela?)
  • Shall I help you with your suitcase?
  • Shall we order a pizza tonight? (Vamos pedir uma pizza hoje à noite?)
  • What time shall we meet? (Que horas a gente se encontra?)

Shall I…?

Offer: do you want me to do it?Oferta: você quer que eu faça?

Shall I make some coffee? (Quer que eu faça um café?)

Shall we…?

Suggestion: let’s do it together.Sugestão: vamos fazer juntos.

Shall we go to the park? (Vamos ao parque?)

“Shall we…?” is similar to “Let’s…”, but it’s a question, so the other person can say yes or no. In the US, people often prefer “Should I…?” or “Do you want me to…?” for offers. Shall with he, she or they sounds very old-fashioned or legal, so avoid it.“Shall we…?” Nos Estados Unidos, é comum preferir “Should I…?” ou “Do you want me to…?” para ofertas. Shall com he, she ou they soa muito antiquado ou jurídico, então evite.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ I will to travel next month. ✓ I will travel next month.Depois de will, o verbo vem sem “to”.

✗ She wills come. ✓ She will come.

✗ Do you will help me? ✓ Will you help me?Na pergunta, will vem antes do sujeito, sem do ou does.

✗ He will have 18 years in May. ✓ He will be 18 in May.Idade em inglês usa o verbo be, e não have.

✗ Shall you open the door? ✓ Will you open the door?Para pedir algo a alguém, use will ou can, e não shall.
