Something, Anything, Nothing

Pronomes IndefinidosArticles, Nouns, Pronouns and DeterminersA2

Something, anything, nothing and everything are indefinite pronouns: words for things, people and places we do not name. They are everywhere in conversation, and they are also where Brazilians make one of their most typical mistakes: the double negative.Something, anything, nothing e everything são pronomes indefinidos: palavras para coisas, pessoas e lugares que não nomeamos. Eles aparecem o tempo todo na conversa, e também é com eles que os brasileiros cometem um dos erros mais típicos: a dupla negação.

A2 The family of words

These pronouns are built from four beginnings (some-, any-, no-, every-) and three endings: -thing for things, -one / -body for people and -where for places. Someone and somebody mean exactly the same; -body is a little more informal.Esses pronomes são formados por quatro começos (some-, any-, no-, every-) e três finais: -thing para coisas, -one / -body para pessoas e -where para lugares. Someone e somebody significam exatamente a mesma coisa; -body é um pouco mais informal.

PrefixThingsPeoplePlaces
some-somethingsomeone / somebodysomewhere
any-anythinganyone / anybodyanywhere
no-nothingno one / nobodynowhere
every-everythingeveryone / everybodyeverywhere

The basic rule is the same as for some and any: some- words in affirmative sentences, any- words in negatives and questions.A regra básica é a mesma de some e any: palavras com some- em frases afirmativas e palavras com any- em negativas e perguntas.

some-affirmative|any-negative / question|no-affirmative verb, negative meaning
  • There’s something in my eye. (Tem alguma coisa no meu olho.)
  • Someone is knocking at the door. (Alguém está batendo na porta.)
  • I left my keys somewhere in the classroom. (Deixei minhas chaves em algum lugar da sala de aula.)
  • Did anyone call me this morning? (Alguém me ligou hoje de manhã?)
  • We didn’t go anywhere on the holiday. (Não fomos a lugar nenhum no feriado.)

A2 Negatives: not anything or nothing?

In Portuguese we say “não vi nada” with two negative words. Standard English allows only ONE negative in the sentence. So you have two correct options: a negative verb + any-, or an affirmative verb + no-. They mean the same; no- sounds a little stronger.Em português dizemos “não vi nada”, com duas palavras negativas. O inglês padrão aceita só UMA negação na frase. Então você tem duas opções corretas: verbo negativo + any-, ou verbo afirmativo + no-. O sentido é o mesmo; no- soa um pouco mais enfático.

not + any-

The verb is negative (don’t, didn’t, isn’t).O verbo fica na negativa (don’t, didn’t, isn’t).

I didn’t see anybody. (Não vi ninguém.)

no- word

The verb is affirmative; the negative is in the pronoun.O verbo fica na afirmativa; a negação está no pronome.

I saw nobody. (Não vi ninguém.)

  • I don’t know anything about football. (Não sei nada de futebol.)
  • There’s nothing in the fridge. Let’s order a pizza. (Não tem nada na geladeira. Vamos pedir uma pizza.)
  • Nobody wants to work on Saturday. (Ninguém quer trabalhar no sábado.)
  • There’s nowhere to park near the hospital. (Não tem onde estacionar perto do hospital.)

At the start of a sentence

When the subject is negative, use a no- word, never any- + not: Nobody came. Not “Anybody didn’t come”.Quando o sujeito é negativo, use uma palavra com no-, nunca any- + not: Nobody came. (Ninguém veio.) E não “Anybody didn’t come”.

In short answers, the no- word works alone: What did you buy? Nothing. Who was there? No one.Em respostas curtas, a palavra com no- funciona sozinha: O que você comprou? Nada. Quem estava lá? Ninguém.

A2 Offers, requests and “any” in affirmatives

We use some- words in questions when we offer or ask for something and expect the answer “yes”. It sounds friendlier.Usamos palavras com some- em perguntas quando oferecemos ou pedimos algo e esperamos a resposta “sim”. Soa mais simpático.

  • Would you like something to drink? (Você quer beber alguma coisa?)
  • Can someone help me with these boxes? (Alguém pode me ajudar com essas caixas?)

In affirmative sentences, any- words mean “it doesn’t matter which”: anything = qualquer coisa, anyone = qualquer pessoa, anywhere = qualquer lugar.Em frases afirmativas, palavras com any- significam “tanto faz qual”: anything = qualquer coisa, anyone = qualquer pessoa, anywhere = qualquer lugar.

  • I’m starving. I can eat anything. (Estou morrendo de fome. Como qualquer coisa.)
  • Anyone can learn English with practice. (Qualquer pessoa pode aprender inglês com prática.)
  • Sit anywhere you like. (Sente onde quiser.)

Teacher’s tip

Compare I didn’t eat anything (não comi nada) with I can eat anything (como qualquer coisa). The negative verb changes everything, so always look at the verb first.Compare I didn’t eat anything (não comi nada) com I can eat anything (como qualquer coisa). O verbo negativo muda tudo, então sempre olhe primeiro para o verbo.

A2 Verb agreement, adjectives and else

All these pronouns take a singular verb, even everyone and everybody, which feel plural in meaning. Think of “todo mundo está”, not “todos estão”.Todos esses pronomes pedem verbo no singular, até everyone e everybody, que parecem plurais no sentido. Pense em “todo mundo está”, não em “todos estão”.

  • Everybody is ready for the trip. (Todo mundo está pronto para a viagem.)
  • Everything was delicious, thank you! (Estava tudo delicioso, obrigada!)

Adjectives come AFTER these pronouns, the opposite of what happens with normal nouns. Else (outro, mais) also comes after them.Os adjetivos vêm DEPOIS desses pronomes, o contrário do que acontece com substantivos comuns. Else (outro, mais) também vem depois deles.

ExamplePortuguêsStructure
Let’s do something different tonight.Vamos fazer algo diferente hoje à noite.pronoun + adjective
I met someone interesting at the conference.Conheci alguém interessante na conferência.pronoun + adjective
There’s nothing new on TV.Não tem nada de novo na TV.pronoun + adjective
Do you need anything else?Precisa de mais alguma coisa?pronoun + else
This isn’t my bag. It’s someone else’s.Essa bolsa não é minha. É de outra pessoa.pronoun + else + ‘s

Nothing to do, somewhere to stay

These pronouns often take to + verb: something to eat, nothing to do, somewhere to stay, someone to talk to.Esses pronomes muitas vezes vêm com to + verbo: something to eat (algo para comer), nothing to do (nada para fazer), somewhere to stay (um lugar para ficar), someone to talk to (alguém com quem conversar).

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ I don’t know nothing. ✓ I don’t know anything. / I know nothing.Em inglês, só uma negação por frase: “não sei nada” vira don’t + anything ou nothing sozinho.

✗ Everybody are here. ✓ Everybody is here.Everybody e everyone pedem verbo no singular.

✗ I want to try different something. ✓ I want to try something different.O adjetivo vem depois de something, anything, nothing.

✗ Anybody didn’t come to the meeting. ✓ Nobody came to the meeting.Sujeito negativo usa nobody / no one com o verbo na afirmativa.

✗ Do you want other thing? ✓ Do you want anything else?“Mais alguma coisa” é anything else (ou something else numa oferta).
