Generic and Common-Gender Pronouns

Pronomes GenéricosArticles, Nouns, Pronouns and DeterminersB2

How do you talk about “o aluno”, “alguém” or “a gente” in general, without saying if the person is a man or a woman? English has a set of generic and common-gender pronouns for this: singular they, he or she, generic you and formal one. Using them well makes your English sound natural, modern and inclusive.Como falar de “o aluno”, “alguém” ou “a gente” de forma geral, sem dizer se a pessoa é homem ou mulher? O inglês tem um conjunto de pronomes genéricos e de gênero comum para isso: o they singular, he or she, o you genérico e o one formal. Usar bem esses pronomes deixa o seu inglês natural, atual e inclusivo.

B2 Singular they

English nouns like student, teacher, doctor, friend and person have no gender. When we refer back to them, or to words like someone, anyone, everybody and nobody, the most natural pronoun is they, even for one person. It has been used this way for centuries and is accepted in speech and in formal writing.Substantivos em inglês como student, teacher, doctor, friend e person não têm gênero. Para retomar essas palavras, ou palavras como someone, anyone, everybody e nobody, o pronome mais natural é they, mesmo para uma pessoa só. Ele é usado assim há séculos e é aceito na fala e na escrita formal.

someone / a student / each person→they / them / their / themselves
  • If a student needs help, they should talk to the coordinator. (Se o aluno precisar de ajuda, deve falar com a coordenação.)
  • Someone left their umbrella in the classroom. (Alguém esqueceu o guarda-chuva na sala.)
  • Everybody did their best in the final. (Todo mundo deu o seu melhor na final.)
  • Nobody likes it when people talk about them behind their back. (Ninguém gosta quando falam mal dele pelas costas.)
  • A friend of mine called. They want to meet us at the café. (Um amigo meu ligou. Quer encontrar a gente no café.)

The verb stays plural

Even when they refers to one person, the verb is plural: they are, they were, they have. This is the same as you, which is plural in form but can refer to one person. The reflexive can be themselves or, for one specific person, themself.Mesmo quando they se refere a uma pessoa só, o verbo fica no plural: they are, they were, they have. É igual ao you, que tem forma de plural, mas pode se referir a uma pessoa. O reflexivo pode ser themselves ou, para uma pessoa específica, themself.

They for non-binary people

Some people do not identify as a man or a woman and use they as their personal pronoun. In this case, they refers to a specific, known person. Respect the pronoun the person uses, as you would respect their name.Algumas pessoas não se identificam como homem nem como mulher e usam they como pronome pessoal. Nesse caso, they se refere a uma pessoa específica e conhecida. Respeite o pronome que a pessoa usa, assim como você respeita o nome dela.

  • My friend Sam is non-binary. They are studying medicine in Recife. (Sam, uma pessoa amiga minha, é não binária e estuda medicina em Recife.)
  • Alex introduced themself to the group and shared their pronouns. (Alex se apresentou ao grupo e disse quais pronomes usa.)

B2 He or she and common-gender nouns

Until the late twentieth century, formal texts used he for everyone: “Each student must bring his book.” Today this sounds old-fashioned and exclusive. Formal documents sometimes use he or she, but it becomes heavy when repeated. Singular they or a plural noun is usually the best solution.Até o fim do século XX, textos formais usavam he para todo mundo: “Each student must bring his book.” Hoje isso soa antiquado e excludente. Documentos formais às vezes usam he or she, mas fica pesado quando se repete. O they singular ou um substantivo no plural costuma ser a melhor solução.

Common-gender nouns

Unlike Portuguese (“o médico / a médica”, “o professor / a professora”), most English nouns for people are common-gender: doctor, teacher, lawyer, engineer, student. There is no need to say “woman doctor” or “lady lawyer”. Modern English also prefers neutral job titles.Ao contrário do português (“o médico / a médica”, “o professor / a professora”), a maioria dos substantivos para pessoas em inglês tem gênero comum: doctor, teacher, lawyer, engineer, student. Não é preciso dizer “woman doctor” nem “lady lawyer”. O inglês atual também prefere nomes de profissão neutros.

Animals, babies and countries

We use it for an animal or a baby when the sex is unknown or unimportant, but he or she for pets and babies we know: Our dog is called Pipoca. She’s three. For countries, modern English prefers it: Brazil and its people.Usamos it para um animal ou um bebê quando o sexo não se sabe ou não importa, mas he ou she para bichos de estimação e bebês que conhecemos: Nossa cachorra se chama Pipoca. Ela tem três anos. Para países, o inglês atual prefere it: o Brasil e seu povo.

B2 Generic you, one, we and people

To talk about people in general, Portuguese uses “a gente”, “você” or the particle “se”. English chooses the pronoun according to the register.Para falar das pessoas em geral, o português usa “a gente”, “você” ou a partícula “se”. O inglês escolhe o pronome de acordo com o registro.

you (everyday)

Generic you means “anyone”, including the speaker. It is the normal choice in conversation and informal writing.O you genérico significa “qualquer pessoa”, incluindo quem fala. É a escolha normal na conversa e na escrita informal.

You can’t park here after 6 p.m. (Não se pode estacionar aqui depois das 18h.)

one (formal)

One is very formal and rare in speech. Its possessive is one’s and its reflexive is oneself. Do not mix it with you.One é muito formal e raro na fala. O possessivo é one’s e o reflexivo é oneself. Não misture com you.

  • People say the food in Belém is amazing. (Dizem que a comida de Belém é incrível.)

A gente is not always we

Brazilians often translate every “a gente” as we. When “a gente” means “you and me, our group”, we is right. When it means “people in general”, generic you is often more natural: You get used to it.Os brasileiros muitas vezes traduzem todo “a gente” como we. Quando “a gente” significa “eu e você, o nosso grupo”, we está certo. Quando significa “as pessoas em geral”, o you genérico costuma ser mais natural: A gente se acostuma.

B2 They for institutions and the Portuguese “se”

They can also refer to authorities, companies or people in general whose identity is not important. Where Portuguese uses the impersonal “se” or a verb with no subject (“vendem”, “dizem”), English often uses this they, generic you or the passive voice, because every English verb needs a subject. They também pode se referir a autoridades, empresas ou pessoas em geral cuja identidade não importa. Onde o português usa o “se” impessoal ou um verbo sem sujeito (“vendem”, “dizem”), o inglês costuma usar esse they, o you genérico ou a voz passiva, porque todo verbo em inglês precisa de sujeito.

  • They’re building a new subway line near my house. (Estão construindo uma nova linha de metrô perto da minha casa.)
  • They say it’s going to be a hot summer. (Dizem que o verão vai ser quente.)
  • English is spoken here. (Fala-se inglês aqui.)

Formal writing and vestibular essays

In essays, avoid generic you, which sounds too conversational. Prefer people, a plural noun, the passive, or it is + adjective + to: It is essential to read the instructions carefully.Em redações, evite o you genérico, que soa coloquial demais. Prefira people, um substantivo no plural, a voz passiva ou it is + adjetivo + to: É essencial ler as instruções com atenção.

Avoid these

✗ One should always protect yourself. ✓ One should always protect oneself.Não misture one com you na mesma frase.
