Subject–Verb Agreement

Concordância VerbalSubject–Verb AgreementC1

In English, as in Portuguese, the verb agrees with its subject. The basic rule is easy; the traps are not: the news is, the people are, a number of students have, neither… nor. At C1, and in exams like Cambridge C1 Advanced, IELTS and TOEFL, accurate agreement in long, complex sentences is one of the clearest signs of advanced English.Em inglês, assim como em português, o verbo concorda com o sujeito. A regra básica é fácil; as armadilhas, não: the news is, the people are, a number of students have, neither… nor. No C1, e em provas como Cambridge C1 Advanced, IELTS e TOEFL, a concordância correta em frases longas e complexas é um dos sinais mais claros de inglês avançado.

C1 Finding the real subject

In long subjects, the verb agrees with the head noun, not with the noun that happens to be closest to it. Prepositional phrases and relative clauses between the subject and the verb do not change the agreement.Em sujeitos longos, o verbo concorda com o núcleo do sujeito, e não com o substantivo que por acaso está mais perto. Locuções com preposição e orações relativas entre o sujeito e o verbo não mudam a concordância.
