Adjectives describe people, places and things: big, happy, expensive, blue. In English they are easier than in Portuguese, because they never change for plural or gender. The big challenge for Brazilians is the position: the adjective usually comes before the noun.Adjetivos descrevem pessoas, lugares e coisas: big, happy, expensive, blue. Em inglês eles são mais fáceis do que em português, porque nunca mudam no plural nem no feminino. O grande desafio para os brasileiros é a posição: o adjetivo normalmente vem antes do substantivo.
A1 Position: before the noun or after be
An adjective can go in two places. It goes before a noun (a red car), or after the verb be (the car is red). In Portuguese we say “um carro vermelho”, but in English we never say “a car red”.O adjetivo pode ficar em dois lugares. Ele vem antes do substantivo (a red car) ou depois do verbo be (the car is red). Em português dizemos “um carro vermelho”, mas em inglês nunca dizemos “a car red”.
- I have a small dog. (Eu tenho um cachorro pequeno.)
- My dog is small. (Meu cachorro é pequeno.)
- Rio is a beautiful city. (O Rio é uma cidade linda.)
- The food at this restaurant is delicious. (A comida deste restaurante é deliciosa.)
A or an?
The article goes with the sound of the adjective, not the noun: an apple, but a red apple; a house, but an old house.O artigo acompanha o som do adjetivo, não do substantivo: an apple, mas a red apple; a house, mas an old house.
A1 Adjectives never change
In English, adjectives have only one form. There is no plural -s and no masculine or feminine. In Portuguese we say “alto, alta, altos, altas”, but in English it is always tall.Em inglês, os adjetivos têm uma única forma. Não existe -s de plural nem masculino e feminino. Em português dizemos “alto, alta, altos, altas”, mas em inglês é sempre tall.
| English | Português |
|---|---|
| a tall boy | um menino alto |
| a tall girl | uma menina alta |
| two tall boys | dois meninos altos |
| two tall girls | duas meninas altas |
- They are new students. (Eles são alunos novos.)
- My sisters are very funny. (Minhas irmãs são muito engraçadas.)
- These shoes are cheap. (Estes sapatos são baratos.)
The rule in one line
Only the noun gets -s in the plural: a big house, two big houses. The adjective stays the same.Só o substantivo recebe -s no plural: a big house, two big houses. O adjetivo fica igual.

Describing people and feelings
Many feelings that use “estar com” in Portuguese use be + adjective in English: I’m hungry, I’m thirsty, I’m sleepy. To describe people, we use adjectives for appearance and personality.Muitas sensações que usam “estar com” em português usam be + adjetivo em inglês: I’m hungry (estou com fome), I’m thirsty (estou com sede), I’m sleepy (estou com sono).
