Adverbs of Manner or Adjectives?

Advérbios de Modo ou Adjetivos?Adjectives and AdverbsA1

Quick or quickly? Good or well? Adjectives describe nouns, and adverbs of manner describe how we do an action. In Portuguese the difference is “rápido” and “rapidamente”, but in conversation we often use “rápido” for both, so Brazilians tend to mix them up in English.Quick ou quickly? Good ou well? Adjetivos descrevem substantivos, e advérbios de modo descrevem como fazemos uma ação. Em português a diferença é “rápido” e “rapidamente”, mas na conversa muitas vezes usamos “rápido” para os dois, por isso os brasileiros costumam confundir em inglês.

A1 Adjective or adverb?

Ask yourself: what am I describing? If it is a person or thing (a noun), use an adjective. If it is an action (a verb), use an adverb. Adverbs of manner answer the question How?Pergunte a si mesmo: o que estou descrevendo? Se for uma pessoa ou coisa (substantivo), use um adjetivo. Se for uma ação (verbo), use um advérbio. Advérbios de modo respondem à pergunta How? (Como?).

A1 Position, and verbs that take adjectives
