So and such both mean “tão” or “tanto”, but they do not go in the same place in the sentence. Once you know what comes after each one, you can add emphasis, talk about results and sound much more natural. So e such significam “tão” ou “tanto”, mas não ficam no mesmo lugar da frase. Quando você entende o que vem depois de cada um, consegue dar ênfase, falar de consequências e soar muito mais natural.
B1 So + adjective, such + noun
The basic rule is about what comes next. So goes before an adjective or an adverb alone. Such goes before a noun, usually with an adjective in front of it. Both make the meaning stronger.A regra básica depende do que vem depois. So vem antes de um adjetivo ou advérbio sozinho. Such vem antes de um substantivo, normalmente com um adjetivo na frente. Os dois intensificam o sentido.
- The test was so difficult! (A prova estava tão difícil!)
- It was such a difficult test! (Foi uma prova tão difícil!)
- Your brother drives so fast. (Seu irmão dirige tão rápido.)
- They are such nice people. (Eles são pessoas tão legais.)
Such a, such an or just such?
With a singular countable noun, use such a or such an. With plural nouns and uncountable nouns, use such without an article. Notice the word order: the article comes after such, never before it.Com substantivo contável no singular, use such a ou such an. Com substantivos no plural e incontáveis, use such sem artigo. Repare na ordem: o artigo vem depois de such, nunca antes.
| Type of noun | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| singular countable | She’s such a good teacher. | Ela é uma professora tão boa. |
| singular (vowel sound) | It was such an amazing trip. | Foi uma viagem tão incrível. |
| plural | They have such cute kids. | Eles têm filhos tão fofos. |
| uncountable | We had such terrible weather. | Pegamos um tempo tão ruim. |
A classic Brazilian mistake
✗ It was a so good party. ✓ It was such a good party. ✓ The party was so good.Em português dizemos “uma festa tão boa”, então é tentador escrever “a so good party”. Em inglês, antes de substantivo, use such a; so fica só com o adjetivo.
So much and so many
When “tanto” or “tantos” goes with a noun, use so much with uncountable nouns and so many with plural countable nouns. So much can also go after a verb, meaning “tanto” in general.Quando “tanto” ou “tantos” acompanha um substantivo, use so much com incontáveis e so many com contáveis no plural. So much também pode vir depois de um verbo, com o sentido de “tanto” em geral.
- I have so much homework this week. (Tenho tanta lição de casa esta semana.)
- There were so many people at the concert in São Paulo. (Tinha tanta gente no show em São Paulo.)
- Thank you so much for your help. (Muito obrigada pela ajuda.)
- I miss my grandma so much. (Sinto tanta falta da minha avó.)
Teacher’s tip
“People” is plural in English, so it is so many people, never “so much people”. The same goes for so many friends, cars, problems. Money, time, traffic and information are uncountable: so much money, so much traffic.“People” é plural em inglês, então é so many people, nunca “so much people”. O mesmo vale para so many friends, cars, problems. Money, time, traffic e information são incontáveis: so much money, so much traffic.
B1+ Results: so… that, such… that
We often use so and such with a that clause to show a result or consequence, like “tão… que” in Portuguese. In informal speech, that is often left out.Muitas vezes usamos so e such com uma oração com that para mostrar resultado ou consequência, como “tão… que” em português. Na fala informal, o that muitas vezes é omitido.
- I was so tired that I fell asleep on the bus. (Eu estava tão cansada que dormi no ônibus.)
- It was such a long meeting that we missed lunch. (Foi uma reunião tão longa que perdemos o almoço.)
- She spoke so quickly I couldn’t understand her. (Ela falou tão rápido que eu não consegui entender.)
- There was so much traffic on the Marginal that we arrived late. (Tinha tanto trânsito na Marginal que chegamos atrasados.)
- He made so many mistakes that the teacher asked him to rewrite it. (Ele cometeu tantos erros que a professora pediu para ele reescrever.)
So few, so little
The same pattern works with few and little: so few with plural countable nouns and so little with uncountable nouns. They mean “tão poucos” and “tão pouco”.O mesmo padrão funciona com few e little: so few com contáveis no plural e so little com incontáveis. Significam “tão poucos” e “tão pouco”.
- So few students came that the class was cancelled. (Vieram tão poucos alunos que a aula foi cancelada.)
- We had so little time that we only saw the beach. (Tivemos tão pouco tempo que só vimos a praia.)
So or such? The same idea, two structures
so + adjective
Focus on the quality. The noun comes before, as the subject.Foco na qualidade. O substantivo vem antes, como sujeito.

such + adjective + noun
Focus on the thing. The noun comes after the adjective.Foco na coisa. O substantivo vem depois do adjetivo.

More natural uses
In conversation, so and such are often used alone for emotion, without a result clause. You can also use such before nouns that already carry a strong idea, like such a mess or such a shame.Na conversa, so e such muitas vezes aparecem sozinhos para expressar emoção, sem oração de resultado. Também usamos such antes de substantivos que já têm uma ideia forte, como such a mess (uma bagunça daquelas) ou such a shame (que pena).
- Your room is such a mess! (Seu quarto está uma bagunça!)
- It’s such a shame you can’t come to the wedding. (Que pena que você não pode vir ao casamento.)
- I’m so sorry I’m late. (Desculpa mesmo pelo atraso.)
So much + comparative
With comparatives, use so much: The new phone is so much better. Do not say “so better”. And with a lot, use such: such a lot of work (informal, common in the UK).Com comparativos, use so much: The new phone is so much better. (O celular novo é muito melhor.) Não diga “so better”. E com a lot, use such: such a lot of work (tanto trabalho), informal e comum no Reino Unido.
Formal inversion (for advanced writing)
In formal writing you may see So + adjective at the start, followed by inverted word order: So difficult was the exam that few students passed. It is not necessary in conversation, but it is good to recognise it in reading tests.Na escrita formal, você pode ver So + adjetivo no começo, seguido de inversão: So difficult was the exam that few students passed. (A prova foi tão difícil que poucos alunos passaram.) Não é necessário na conversa, mas é bom reconhecer em provas de leitura.
