Adjectives Without a Noun: The Rich, The Poor

Adjetivos sem SubstantivoAdjectives and AdverbsB1+

In English, an adjective usually needs a noun: “a rich man”, “poor families”. But with the, some adjectives can stand alone and refer to a whole group of people: the rich, the poor, the young. This structure is common in news, essays and vestibular texts.Em inglês, o adjetivo normalmente precisa de um substantivo: “a rich man”, “poor families”. Mas com the, alguns adjetivos podem aparecer sozinhos e se referir a um grupo inteiro de pessoas: the rich (os ricos), the poor (os pobres), the young (os jovens). Essa estrutura é comum em notícias, redações e textos de vestibular.

B1+ The + adjective for groups of people

We use the + adjective to talk about all the people who share a characteristic, in general. The adjective does not change: it never takes -s. But the meaning is plural, so the verb is plural too.Usamos the + adjetivo para falar de todas as pessoas que têm uma característica, de forma geral. O adjetivo não muda: nunca recebe -s. Mas o sentido é plural, então o verbo também fica no plural.

the+adjective (no -s)+plural verb
  • The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. (Os ricos estão ficando mais ricos e os pobres, mais pobres.)
  • The young often have more energy than the old. (Os jovens costumam ter mais energia do que os idosos.)

  • The injured were taken to the hospital. (Os feridos foram levados ao hospital.)

No -s on the adjective

✗ The poors need help. ✓ The poor need help.Em português dizemos “os pobres”, com plural. Em inglês, o adjetivo nunca vai para o plural: é the poor, the rich, the young. Quem mostra o plural é o verbo: the poor need, e não “needs”.

B1+ One person or a specific group? Add a noun

The + adjective always means the whole group in general. To talk about one person, or about a specific group, you need a noun such as man, woman, person or people. The + adjetivo sempre significa o grupo todo, de forma geral. Para falar de uma pessoa só, ou de um grupo específico, você precisa de um substantivo como man, woman, person ou people.

the + adjective (group)

All people of that type, in general.Todas as pessoas daquele tipo, em geral.

The old deserve respect. (Os idosos merecem respeito.)

adjective + noun (individual / specific)

One person, or particular people.Uma pessoa, ou pessoas específicas.

An old man helped me at the station. (Um senhor me ajudou na estação.)

  • A rich businessman bought the old factory. (Um empresário rico comprou a fábrica antiga.)
  • The young people in my class want to study abroad. (Os jovens da minha turma querem estudar no exterior.)
  • A homeless man asked me for something to eat. (Um homem em situação de rua me pediu algo para comer.)

Teacher’s tip

A quick test: if you can translate it as “os … em geral”, use the + adjective. If you mean “um”, “uma”, or “aqueles … específicos”, add a noun: a poor family, the sick children in this hospital.Um teste rápido: se dá para traduzir como “os … em geral”, use the + adjetivo. Se você quer dizer “um”, “uma” ou “aqueles … específicos”, acrescente um substantivo: a poor family (uma família pobre), the sick children in this hospital (as crianças doentes deste hospital).

Adding adverbs and pairs

You can put an adverb before the adjective: the very poor, the extremely rich, the mentally ill. Two groups are often joined with and, sometimes without the: rich and poor alike means “tanto ricos quanto pobres”.Você pode colocar um advérbio antes do adjetivo: the very poor (os muito pobres), the extremely rich (os extremamente ricos), the mentally ill (as pessoas com doenças mentais). Dois grupos costumam ser ligados por and, às vezes sem the: rich and poor alike significa “tanto ricos quanto pobres”.

  • The very poor spend most of their income on food. (Os muito pobres gastam a maior parte da renda com comida.)
  • The disease affects young and old alike. (A doença afeta jovens e idosos igualmente.)

B1+ Nationalities: the French, the Japanese

Nationality adjectives that end in -ch, -sh, -ss or -ese work the same way: the French, the Spanish, the Swiss, the Japanese mean the whole people, with a plural verb. Most other nationalities are real nouns, so they take -s: the Brazilians, the Italians, the Mexicans.Os adjetivos de nacionalidade terminados em -ch, -sh, -ss ou -ese funcionam do mesmo jeito: the French, the Spanish, the Swiss, the Japanese significam o povo inteiro, com verbo no plural. A maioria das outras nacionalidades são substantivos de verdade, então recebem -s: the Brazilians, the Italians, the Mexicans.

EndingThe whole peopleOne person
-chthe French, the Dutcha Frenchman, a Dutch woman
-shthe Spanish, the Irisha Spaniard, an Irishman
-ssthe Swissa Swiss person
-esethe Japanese, the Chinesea Japanese student
-an / -ianthe Brazilians, the Americansa Brazilian, an American
  • The Japanese are famous for their punctuality. (Os japoneses são famosos pela pontualidade.)
  • The Brazilians won the match in the last minute. (Os brasileiros venceram a partida no último minuto.)

One Japanese, one Swiss?

For one person, a Japanese or a Swiss alone can sound odd or impolite. It is safer to add a noun: a Japanese woman, a Swiss friend, a French student.Para uma pessoa só, a Japanese ou a Swiss sozinho pode soar estranho ou até deselegante. É mais seguro acrescentar um substantivo: a Japanese woman, a Swiss friend, a French student.

B1+ Abstract ideas and the word one

The + adjective can also name an abstract idea, not people. In this case the verb is singular: the unknown (o desconhecido), the impossible (o impossível), the obvious (o óbvio), the supernatural (o sobrenatural). The + adjetivo também pode nomear uma ideia abstrata, e não pessoas. Nesse caso o verbo fica no singular: the unknown (o desconhecido), the impossible (o impossível), the obvious (o óbvio), the supernatural (o sobrenatural).

  • Fear of the unknown is natural. (O medo do desconhecido é natural.)
  • She always tries to do the impossible. (Ela sempre tenta fazer o impossível.)
  • The best is yet to come. (O melhor ainda está por vir.)

Things, not people: use one or ones

For objects, Portuguese simply drops the noun: “Quero o azul”. English does not allow this with ordinary adjectives. Use one (singular) or ones (plural) after the adjective.Para objetos, o português simplesmente omite o substantivo: “Quero o azul”. O inglês não permite isso com adjetivos comuns. Use one (singular) ou ones (plural) depois do adjetivo.

  • I don’t like the black shirt. I prefer the blue one. (Não gosto da camisa preta. Prefiro a azul.)
  • These shoes are too small. Do you have bigger ones? (Esses sapatos estão pequenos. Você tem maiores?)

Rule of thumb

People in general: the + adjective + plural verb (the poor are). An abstract idea: the + adjective + singular verb (the unknown is). Objects: adjective + one / ones (the red one).Pessoas em geral: the + adjetivo + verbo no plural (the poor are). Ideia abstrata: the + adjetivo + verbo no singular (the unknown is). Objetos: adjetivo + one / ones (the red one).
