Already, still and yet are small words that tell us about time and expectations: something happened sooner than expected, it continues, or we are waiting for it. In Portuguese we say “já” and “ainda” for all of them, which is exactly why Brazilians mix them up.Already, still e yet são palavras pequenas que falam de tempo e de expectativa: algo aconteceu antes do esperado, continua acontecendo ou ainda está sendo aguardado.
B1+ Already: sooner than expected
Already means “já”: something has happened, maybe earlier than we expected. It is very common with the present perfect and usually goes between the auxiliary and the main verb. It can also go at the end of the sentence for emphasis. B1+ Yet: we are waiting for it
Yet is used in negative sentences and questions. It means “ainda não” in negatives and “já” in questions. It shows that we expect the action to happen. Yet usually goes at the end of the sentence.
