Collective Nouns

Substantivos ColetivosArticles, Nouns, Pronouns and DeterminersB1

Collective nouns are singular nouns that name a group: of people, animals or things. Just like cardume and matilha in Portuguese, English has its own word for each group, and some of the most curious ones come from old hunting books.Collective nouns são substantivos no singular que representam um grupo: de pessoas, animais ou coisas. Como cardume e matilha em português, o inglês tem palavras próprias para cada grupo, e algumas das mais curiosas vêm de antigos livros de caça.

B1 Two kinds of collective nouns

Everyday ones

They appear in any conversation, news story or exam.Aparecem em qualquer conversa, notícia ou prova.

a team, a family, a group, a flock of birds, a herd of cows (um time, uma família, um grupo, um bando de pássaros, uma boiada)

Curious ones

Poetic, rare terms: great for fun facts and vocabulary.Termos poéticos e raros, ótimos para curiosidades e vocabulário.

a parliament of owls, a murder of crows, a crash of rhinos (um bando de corujas, de corvos, de rinocerontes)

The pattern is simple: a / an + collective noun + of + plural noun. Sometimes the group word is enough on its own, because the meaning is clear: the team, the audience, the staff.A estrutura é simples: a / an + coletivo + of + substantivo no plural. Às vezes a palavra do grupo basta sozinha, porque o sentido é claro: the team, the audience, the staff.

Com a group of / a flock of + substantivo no plural, os dois funcionam: A group of students is waiting (ou are waiting).

They are rare in everyday life, but they show up in books, documentaries and quizzes.Os terms of venery surgiram em listas para caçadores do século XV, e a mais famosa é o Book of St Albans (1486). A murder of crows aparece em registros dessa mesma época. Outros são bem mais recentes e nasceram na literatura ou por brincadeira, como a tower of giraffes e a dazzle of zebras. Muitos descrevem o comportamento ou a fama do animal. São raros no dia a dia, mas aparecem em livros, documentários e quizzes.

Humorous collective nouns

Some lists also include witty terms for people, such as an eloquence of lawyers. They are English wordplay, not everyday vocabulary, so do not use them in formal writing.Algumas listas também trazem termos espirituosos para pessoas, como an eloquence of lawyers (“uma eloquência de advogados”).
