Your friend calls and asks you to tell your sister something. Your boss leaves a note for a colleague. Your mom sends a voice message for the whole family. Passing on messages is the most common way we use reported speech in real life, and it is much simpler than the grammar books make it look: Leo says hi. She wants you to call her back. She wants you to call her back.
A2 Passing on a message right away
When you pass on a message soon after you hear it, the message is still fresh and still true. So you can use a reporting verb in the present (says, wants, is asking) and keep the original tense. You only change the pronouns, so the sentence makes sense for the person who is listening.
- “I’m stuck in traffic.” → Lucas says he’s stuck in traffic.
- “Dinner is ready!” → Mom says dinner is ready.
- “Please call me back.” → Carla wants you to call her back.
- “Tell her I’ll be late.” → He asked me to tell you he’ll be late.
Ready-to-use message phrases
Change the pronouns, not the message
The words I, you, my and your belong to the person who sent the message. When you pass it on, think: who is talking now, and who is listening? Portuguese works the same way: “Estou cansado” becomes “Ele disse que está cansado”.As palavras I, you, my e your pertencem a quem mandou o recado.

Teacher’s tip
Before you pass on a message, ask yourself two questions: Is it a statement, a question or a request? Is it still true now? The first answer gives you the pattern (says, wants to know if, asked you to). The second tells you if you need to change the tense. Ainda vale agora? A primeira resposta dá a estrutura (says, wants to know if, asked you to). A segunda mostra se você precisa mudar o tempo verbal.
Common Mistakes
Avoid these
✗ She said you call her. ✓ She wants you to call her.Para repassar um pedido, use wants you to ou asked you to + verbo.
✗ He wants that you send the file. ✓ He wants you to send the file.Want não aceita that: use want + pessoa + to.
✗ She wants to know where do you live. ✓ She wants to know where you live.Depois de wants to know, não use do / does / did.
✗ Mom said me to buy bread. ✓ Mom told me to buy bread.
✗ He asked me to tell you that I’m late. ✓ He asked me to tell you that he’s late.
✗ Leo send hi. ✓ Leo says hi.A expressão fixa é say hi, e com he / she o verbo ganha -s: says hi.
