Cleft Sentences: Adding Emphasis

Orações Clivadas: ÊnfaseWord OrderB2

In Portuguese we say “Foi a Ana que ligou” or “O que eu preciso é de férias” to highlight one part of a sentence. English does the same with cleft sentences. They help you correct people politely, contrast ideas and sound fluent in speaking exams and essays.Em português dizemos “Foi a Ana que ligou” ou “O que eu preciso é de férias” para destacar uma parte da frase. O inglês faz o mesmo com as cleft sentences (orações clivadas). Elas ajudam você a corrigir alguém com educação, contrastar ideias e soar fluente em provas orais e redações.

B2 It-clefts: It was… that…

An it-cleft splits one sentence into two parts to put the focus on one element. The focused information goes after It is / It was, and the rest of the sentence comes after that (or who for people).Uma it-cleft divide uma frase em duas partes para dar foco a um elemento. A informação em destaque vem depois de It is / It was, e o resto da frase vem depois de that (ou who, para pessoas).

It is / It was+focused information+that / who+rest of the sentence

Start with a neutral sentence: Marina lost the keys at the beach on Saturday. We can focus on almost any part of it, depending on what we want to correct or contrast.Comece com uma frase neutra: Marina lost the keys at the beach on Saturday. Podemos dar foco a quase qualquer parte dela, dependendo do que queremos corrigir ou contrastar.

The verb stays singular

Even when the focus is plural, we say It is / It was, never “They were”: It was my parents who paid for the trip. The verb after who / that agrees with the focused noun: It’s my sisters who live in Porto Alegre.Mesmo quando o foco está no plural, dizemos It is / It was, nunca “They were”: It was my parents who paid for the trip. (Foram meus pais que pagaram a viagem.) O verbo depois de who / that concorda com o substantivo em foco: It’s my sisters who live in Porto Alegre. (São minhas irmãs que moram em Porto Alegre.)

B2 Wh-clefts: What I need is…

A wh-cleft starts with a clause introduced by What, then is / was, then the focused information at the end. This puts the new or important idea in the final position, where the listener pays most attention.Uma wh-cleft começa com uma oração introduzida por What, depois is / was e, no fim, a informação em destaque. Isso coloca a ideia nova ou importante na posição final, onde quem ouve presta mais atenção.

Focusing on an action

To focus on a whole event, use What happened was (that)…Para dar foco a uma ação, use do na primeira parte. Depois de is / was, use o verbo na forma base ou o infinitivo com to. Para destacar um acontecimento inteiro, use What happened was (that)…

Brazilians often translate “O que” as The what or That what. In English it is just What: What I want is… You can also say The thing (that) I want is…Os brasileiros muitas vezes traduzem “O que” como The what ou That what. Em inglês é só What: What I want is… Você também pode dizer The thing (that) I want is…

B2 Other cleft patterns: all, the reason, the place

Instead of What, we can start with All (meaning “the only thing”) or with a general noun such as the thing, the person, the place, the time, the reason. These patterns are very common in conversation.Em vez de What, podemos começar com All (no sentido de “a única coisa”) ou com um substantivo geral, como the thing, the person, the place, the time, the reason. Reversed wh-clefts

We can also put the focus first and the wh- clause at the end: A long holiday is what I need. / That’s what I meant. / That’s why I called you. These short forms are extremely common in speech.Também podemos colocar o foco primeiro e a oração com wh- no fim: A long holiday is what I need. (Umas férias longas é o que eu preciso.) / That’s what I meant. (Foi isso que eu quis dizer.) / That’s why I called you. (Foi por isso que eu te liguei.) Essas formas curtas são muito comuns na fala.

B2 Using clefts to correct, contrast and emphasise

Clefts are perfect for correcting a wrong idea, because the stress falls naturally on the new information. They also make essays sound more organised, especially in the introduction and the conclusion. As clivadas são perfeitas para corrigir uma ideia errada, porque a ênfase cai naturalmente sobre a informação nova. Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ They were my parents who paid. ✓ It was my parents who paid.A clivada usa sempre It is / It was, mesmo com foco no plural.

✗ The what I need is a break. ✓ What I need is a break.“O que” no início da frase é só What.

✗ What I need it is a break. ✓ What I need is a break.A oração com What já é o sujeito; não acrescente it.
