The Perfect Tenses: Forms and Uses

Os Tempos Perfeitos: Formas e UsosVerb Tense ReviewsC1

All perfect tenses share one idea: they look back from a point in time to something that happened before it. No nível C1, o desafio não é a forma, e sim a escolha: simple ou continuous, present perfect ou past simple, e as formas perfeitas escondidas em infinitivos, gerúndios e modais.

C1 The perfect system at a glance

Each perfect tense has a reference point: now, a moment in the past or a moment in the future. The action happened before that point and is relevant to it.Cada tempo perfeito tem um ponto de referência: agora, um momento no passado ou um momento no futuro. A ação aconteceu antes desse ponto e tem relevância para ele.

TenseExampleReference pointPortuguês

Why Brazilians find this hard

Portuguese often uses the present or the simple past where English needs a perfect tense: “Moro aqui há dez anos” is I have lived here for ten years, never “I live here for ten years”. And “Já comi” is usually I have already eaten.O português muitas vezes usa o presente ou o pretérito perfeito onde o inglês exige um tempo perfeito: “Moro aqui há dez anos” é I have lived here for ten years, nunca “I live here for ten years”. E “Já comi” normalmente é I have already eaten.

C1 Present perfect: nuances and contrasts

Use the present perfect when the time period is unfinished or not mentioned, and when the past action has a result now. Use the past simple when the time is finished and stated, or clearly understood.Use o present perfect quando o período ainda não terminou ou não é mencionado, e quando a ação passada tem um resultado agora. Use o past simple quando o tempo já terminou e é mencionado, ou fica claro pelo contexto.

The continuous form emphasises the activity, its duration, or a temporary situation. The simple form emphasises the result or the number of completed actions. State verbs like know, believe and own stay simple.A forma contínua enfatiza a atividade, a duração ou uma situação temporária. A forma simples enfatiza o resultado ou o número de ações concluídas. Verbos de estado como know, believe e own ficam na forma simples.
