Pretty, Rather, Quite, Fairly

IntensificadoresAdjectives and AdverbsB1+

Pretty, rather, quite and fairly all sit somewhere between “a little” and “very”. They make your English sound more precise and more natural, but each one has its own strength, tone and word order.Pretty, rather, quite e fairly ficam em algum ponto entre “um pouco” e “muito”. Eles deixam seu inglês mais preciso e mais natural, mas cada um tem sua intensidade, seu tom e sua ordem na frase.

B1+ How strong is each one?

These words are intensifiers (or softeners): they go before adjectives and adverbs to show “how much”. In Portuguese we often translate all of them as “bem”, “bastante” or “razoavelmente”, so the difference is in the strength and the tone.Essas palavras são intensificadores (ou atenuadores): vêm antes de adjetivos e advérbios para mostrar “quanto”. Em português costumamos traduzir todas como “bem”, “bastante” ou “razoavelmente”, então a diferença está na intensidade e no tom.

moderateThe test was fairly hard.A prova estava razoavelmente difícil.
moderate to strongThe test was quite hard.A prova estava bem difícil.

  • She speaks English pretty well. (Ela fala inglês muito bem.)

The scale is not exact

The difference between these words depends on context, tone of voice and region. Treat the table as a guide, not a mathematical rule. In the US, quite often sounds stronger, close to very.A diferença entre essas palavras depende do contexto, do tom de voz e da região. Use a tabela como guia, não como regra matemática. Nos Estados Unidos, quite costuma soar mais forte, perto de very.

B1+ Fairly and pretty

Fairly is the weakest of the four. It means “razoavelmente”: the quality is there, but not very much. It is common with positive adjectives, and fairly good can sound like “ok, nothing special”.Fairly é o mais fraco dos quatro. Significa “razoavelmente”: a qualidade existe, mas não muito. É comum com adjetivos positivos, e fairly good pode soar como “ok, nada de especial”.

  • I’m fairly sure the meeting is at three. (Tenho quase certeza de que a reunião é às três.)
  • The hotel was fairly clean, but the breakfast was poor. (O hotel era razoavelmente limpo, mas o café da manhã era fraco.)

Pretty is informal and extremely common in conversation. It is stronger than fairly, similar to quite. Remember: here pretty has nothing to do with “bonito”. Pretty much means “quase” or “praticamente”.Pretty é informal e muito comum na conversa. É mais forte que fairly, parecido com quite. Lembre-se: aqui pretty não tem nada a ver com “bonito”. Pretty much significa “quase” ou “praticamente”.

  • That movie was pretty good. You should watch it. (Esse filme é bem bom. Você devia assistir.)

Use pretty with friends, in messages and in conversation. In a formal email, an essay or the writing part of an exam, prefer fairly, quite or rather.Use pretty com amigos, em mensagens e na conversa. Num e-mail formal, numa redação ou na parte escrita de uma prova, prefira fairly, quite ou rather.

B1+ Quite: two different meanings

Quite changes meaning depending on the adjective. With normal (gradable) adjectives like good, tired, cold, it means “bem / bastante”. With absolute or extreme adjectives like right, sure, impossible, amazing, it means “completely”.Quite muda de sentido conforme o adjetivo. Com adjetivos comuns (graduáveis), como good, tired, cold, significa “bem / bastante”. Com adjetivos absolutos ou extremos, como right, sure, impossible, amazing, significa “completamente”.

quite + gradable adjective

Bem, bastante (but not extremely).Bem, bastante (mas não extremamente).

I’m quite tired after the trip. (Estou bem cansada depois da viagem.)

quite + absolute adjective

Completely, totally.Completamente, totalmente.

You’re quite right. (Você tem toda a razão.)

  • It’s quite impossible to finish this by Friday. (É totalmente impossível terminar isso até sexta.)
  • The view from Pão de Açúcar is quite amazing. (A vista do Pão de Açúcar é simplesmente incrível.)
  • I’m not quite ready. Give me five minutes. (Ainda não estou totalmente pronta. Me dá cinco minutos.)

Not quite means “não exatamente” or “não totalmente”. Quite also works with some verbs (I quite like it = “até que eu gosto”) and in fixed phrases like quite a lot and quite a few (“bastante”, “um bom número”).Not quite significa “não exatamente” ou “não totalmente”. Quite também funciona com alguns verbos (I quite like it = “até que eu gosto”) e em expressões fixas como quite a lot e quite a few (“bastante”, “um bom número”).

B1+ Rather, and word order with a / an

Rather is a little formal and is often used with negative ideas or to show surprise: something is more than we expected. It is the only one of the four that goes naturally with comparatives and with too.Rather é um pouco formal e costuma aparecer com ideias negativas ou para mostrar surpresa: algo é mais do que esperávamos. É o único dos quatro que combina naturalmente com comparativos e com too.

  • The exam was rather easier than I expected. (A prova foi bem mais fácil do que eu esperava.)
  • This jacket is rather too big for me. (Esta jaqueta está um tanto grande demais para mim.)

Rather or would rather?

✗ I rather stay home. ✓ I’d rather stay home.Would rather (‘d rather) é outra estrutura: significa “preferir”. Sem would, a frase fica errada. O intensificador rather vem antes de adjetivos: rather cold.

Word order with a / an + noun

This is where most mistakes happen. Fairly and pretty go after a / an. Quite goes before a / an. Rather can go in either position.É aqui que acontece a maioria dos erros. Fairly e pretty vêm depois de a / an. Quite vem antes de a / an. Rather pode ir nas duas posições.

WordExamplePortuguês
fairlyIt’s a fairly small city.É uma cidade razoavelmente pequena.
prettyShe’s a pretty good singer.Ela é uma cantora muito boa.
quiteIt was quite a long trip.Foi uma viagem bem longa.
ratherIt’s rather a difficult question.É uma pergunta bastante difícil.
ratherIt’s a rather difficult question.É uma pergunta bastante difícil.

Intonation changes the message

In speech, stress matters. If you stress the adjective (quite GOOD), it sounds positive. If you stress the intensifier (QUITE good), it sounds like “ok, but not great”. The same happens with pretty and fairly.Na fala, a ênfase importa. Se você enfatiza o adjetivo (quite GOOD), soa positivo. Se enfatiza o intensificador (QUITE good), soa como “ok, mas nada demais”. O mesmo acontece com pretty e fairly.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ It was a quite good film. ✓ It was quite a good film.Quite vem antes de a / an.
