Stative vs Dynamic Verbs

Verbos de Estado x Verbos de AçãoModals, Imperative and Phrasal VerbsA2

Why do we say I know and not “I’m knowing”? Because some English verbs describe states, not actions, and they are not normally used in the continuous form. Understanding the difference between stative and dynamic verbs will make your English sound much more natural.Por que dizemos I know e não “I’m knowing”? Porque alguns verbos em inglês descrevem estados, não ações, e normalmente não são usados na forma contínua. Entender a diferença entre verbos de estado e verbos de ação vai deixar seu inglês muito mais natural.

A2 Actions and states

Dynamic verbs describe actions: things that happen, start and finish, like run, eat, study, work. They can be used in the simple and in the continuous forms. Stative verbs describe states: thoughts, feelings, possession and senses, like know, love, have, need. They usually stay in the simple form, even when we talk about now.Verbos de ação (dynamic) descrevem ações: coisas que acontecem, começam e terminam, como run, eat, study, work. Eles podem ser usados nas formas simples e contínuas. Verbos de estado (stative) descrevem estados: pensamentos, sentimentos, posse e sentidos, como know, love, have, need. Eles normalmente ficam na forma simples, mesmo quando falamos do agora.

Dynamic verb

An action in progress can be continuous.Uma ação em andamento pode ficar no contínuo.

I’m studying for the test now. (Estou estudando para a prova agora.)

Stative verb

A state stays in the simple form, even now.Um estado fica na forma simples, mesmo agora.

I know the answer now. (Eu sei a resposta agora.)

  • Look! The kids are playing in the rain. (Olha! As crianças estão brincando na chuva.)
  • I need a new laptop. Mine is very slow. (Preciso de um notebook novo. O meu está muito lento.)
  • She’s talking to her boss right now. (Ela está falando com o chefe agora.)
  • This bag belongs to Juliana. (Esta bolsa é da Juliana.)

Teacher’s tip

A quick test: can you see the verb happening, like a scene in a film? Run, cook and dance are actions. You cannot “see” someone knowing, wanting or believing; those are states.Um teste rápido: dá para ver o verbo acontecendo, como uma cena de filme? Run, cook e dance são ações. Você não consegue “ver” alguém knowing (sabendo), wanting (querendo) ou believing (acreditando); isso são estados.

A2 The main groups of stative verbs

You do not need to memorize a huge list. Most stative verbs belong to a few groups. Learn the groups and you will recognize them easily.Você não precisa decorar uma lista enorme. A maioria dos verbos de estado pertence a poucos grupos. Aprenda os grupos e você vai reconhecê-los com facilidade.

GroupVerbsExamplePortuguês
thinkingknow, understand, believe, remember, forget, meanI don’t understand this word.Não entendo esta palavra.
feelingslove, like, hate, prefer, want, needShe wants a dog.Ela quer um cachorro.

sensessee, hear, smell, tasteI hear music.Estou ouvindo música.

When they describe an action, the continuous is fine.Alguns verbos podem ser de estado ou de ação, dependendo do sentido. Quando descrevem um estado, use a forma simples. Quando descrevem uma ação, o contínuo é aceito.

É de ação em expressões de atividade: have breakfast (tomar café da manhã), have a shower (tomar banho), have a party (dar uma festa), have fun (se divertir).
