The More…, The Better…

Quanto Mais…, Melhor…Adjectives and AdverbsB1+

“Quanto mais você estuda, mais você aprende.” In English, this idea uses a special structure with two comparatives: The more you study, the more you learn. It is short, elegant and very common in conversation, songs, advertising and exam texts.“Quanto mais você estuda, mais você aprende.” Em inglês, essa ideia usa uma estrutura especial com dois comparativos: The more you study, the more you learn. Ela é curta, elegante e muito comum na conversa, em músicas, na publicidade e nos textos de provas.

B1+ The basic structure

We use the + comparative …, the + comparative … to show that two things change together: when one changes, the other changes too. Each half starts with the, and the two halves are separated by a comma. Here, the does not mean “o” or “a”; it means “quanto”.Usamos the + comparativo …, the + comparativo … para mostrar que duas coisas mudam juntas: quando uma muda, a outra também muda. Cada metade começa com the, e as duas metades são separadas por vírgula. Aqui, the não significa “o” ou “a”; significa “quanto”.

The + comparative+ subject + verb,+the + comparative+ subject + verb
  • The more you practice, the better you get. (Quanto mais você pratica, melhor você fica.)
  • The older I get, the happier I feel. (Quanto mais velha eu fico, mais feliz eu me sinto.)
  • The earlier we leave, the less traffic we’ll find on the Bandeirantes. (Quanto mais cedo a gente sair, menos trânsito vamos pegar na Bandeirantes.)
  • The harder Bruno trained, the faster he ran. (Quanto mais o Bruno treinava, mais rápido ele corria.)

Don’t forget the

✗ More you study, more you learn. ✓ The more you study, the more you learn.Em português não há artigo em “quanto mais”, por isso muitos brasileiros esquecem o the. Em inglês, ele é obrigatório nas duas metades da frase.

B1+ Choosing the right comparative

After the, use the normal comparative form: -er for short adjectives and adverbs, more for long ones, and the irregular forms better, worse, further. You can also use more, less and fewer alone or with a noun.Depois de the, use a forma comparativa normal: -er para adjetivos e advérbios curtos, more para os longos, e as formas irregulares better, worse, further. Também dá para usar more, less e fewer sozinhos ou com um substantivo.

TypeExamplePortuguês
short adjective (-er)The bigger the city, the higher the rent.Quanto maior a cidade, mais alto o aluguel.
long adjective (more)The more expensive the hotel, the more comfortable the beds.Quanto mais caro o hotel, mais confortáveis as camas.
irregularThe worse the weather, the better the movie night.Quanto pior o tempo, melhor a noite de filmes.
more / less + verbThe more I sleep, the less I eat.Quanto mais eu durmo, menos eu como.
more + nounThe more money he earns, the more things he buys.Quanto mais dinheiro ele ganha, mais coisas ele compra.
fewer + plural nounThe fewer mistakes you make, the higher your grade.Quanto menos erros você comete, maior a sua nota.
adverbThe more carefully you read, the fewer errors you’ll find.Quanto mais atentamente você lê, menos erros vai encontrar.

Teacher’s tip

Notice that “mais” in Portuguese can become more, -er or an irregular form in English. Translate the whole idea, not the word: “quanto mais cedo” is the earlier, not “the more early”; “melhor” is the better, not “the more good”.Repare que o “mais” do português pode virar more, -er ou uma forma irregular em inglês. Traduza a ideia inteira, não a palavra: “quanto mais cedo” é the earlier, e não “the more early”; “melhor” é the better, e não “the more good”.

B1+ Word order: keep the comparative together

This is the hardest part for Brazilians. The comparative word (and its noun, if there is one) goes immediately after the, at the start of the clause. Then comes the subject, then the verb. The verb never comes between the and the adjective.Esta é a parte mais difícil para os brasileiros. O comparativo (e o substantivo dele, se houver) vem logo depois de the, no começo da oração. Depois vem o sujeito e, em seguida, o verbo. O verbo nunca fica entre o the e o adjetivo.

Wrong order

Following the Portuguese order.Seguindo a ordem do português.

✗ The more is difficult the test, the more I study. (Quanto mais difícil é a prova…)

Right order

The + comparative + subject + verb.The + comparativo + sujeito + verbo.

✓ The more difficult the test is, the more I study. (Quanto mais difícil a prova, mais eu estudo.)

  • The more popular a restaurant is, the longer you have to wait. (Quanto mais famoso um restaurante, mais tempo você tem que esperar.)
  • The more time you spend online, the less you sleep. (Quanto mais tempo você passa na internet, menos você dorme.)
  • The more questions Sofia asked, the more confused the teacher looked. (Quanto mais perguntas a Lara fazia, mais confuso o professor parecia.)

Leaving out the verb

When the verb is be, it is often left out, especially in short sentences: The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. And in fixed expressions, you can drop the whole clause: The sooner, the better. / The more, the merrier.Quando o verbo é be, ele muitas vezes é omitido, principalmente em frases curtas: The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. (Quanto maior o risco, maior a recompensa.) E em expressões fixas dá para tirar a oração inteira: The sooner, the better. (Quanto antes, melhor.) / The more, the merrier. (Quanto mais gente, melhor.)

B1+ Tenses and a related structure

To talk about the future, we normally use the present in the first half and will in the second half, as with if and when. For a past story, use the past in both halves.Para falar do futuro, normalmente usamos o presente na primeira metade e will na segunda, como acontece com if e when. Para contar algo no passado, use o passado nas duas metades.

  • The sooner you book the tickets, the cheaper they will be. (Quanto antes você comprar as passagens, mais baratas elas vão ser.)
  • The longer we waited, the more nervous we got. (Quanto mais esperávamos, mais nervosos ficávamos.)
  • The more you save now, the more relaxed you’ll be when you retire. (Quanto mais você economizar agora, mais tranquilo vai estar quando se aposentar.)

Don’t confuse this structure with a repeated comparative, which shows that something keeps changing: more and more, better and better, colder and colder. Here there is no the.Não confunda essa estrutura com o comparativo repetido, que mostra que algo continua mudando (“cada vez mais”): more and more, better and better, colder and colder. Aqui não existe the.

  • Your English is getting better and better. (Seu inglês está ficando cada vez melhor.)
  • Rent in São Paulo is becoming more and more expensive. (O aluguel em São Paulo está ficando cada vez mais caro.)

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ More you read, more you know. ✓ The more you read, the more you know.O the é obrigatório nas duas partes.

✗ The more you study, the most you learn. ✓ The more you study, the more you learn.Use o comparativo (more), não o superlativo (most).

✗ The more is cheap the flight, the more full it is. ✓ The cheaper the flight is, the fuller it is.Adjetivo curto leva -er, e o adjetivo vem logo depois de the, antes do verbo.

✗ The more good you sleep, the more good you feel. ✓ The better you sleep, the better you feel.“Melhor” é better, forma irregular.

✗ The more early, the more better. ✓ The earlier, the better.Nunca junte more com -er ou com better.
