Myself, yourself, themselves and each other look simple, but they are a classic trap for Brazilians. Portuguese uses “se” and “me” in places where English uses nothing at all, and English uses reflexives in ways Portuguese does not.Myself, yourself, themselves e each other parecem simples, mas são uma armadilha clássica para brasileiros. O português usa “se” e “me” onde o inglês não usa nada, e o inglês usa reflexivos de formas que o português não usa.
B1 Forms and basic uses
Reflexive pronouns end in -self (singular) or -selves (plural). We use them when the subject and the object of the verb are the same person or thing.Os pronomes reflexivos terminam em -self (singular) ou -selves (plural). Usamos esses pronomes quando o sujeito e o objeto do verbo são a mesma pessoa ou coisa.
| Subject | Reflexive | Português |
|---|---|---|
| I | myself | me, a mim mesmo(a) |
| you (one person) | yourself | se, te, a você mesmo(a) |
| he | himself | se, a si mesmo |
| she | herself | se, a si mesma |
| it | itself | se, a si mesmo(a) |
| we | ourselves | nos, a nós mesmos(as) |
| you (two or more) | yourselves | se, a vocês mesmos(as) |
| they | themselves | se, a si mesmos(as) |
Spelling
Notice the base of each form: myself, yourself, ourselves and yourselves come from possessives, but himself and themselves come from object pronouns. There is no “hisself” or “theirselves” in standard English.Repare na base de cada forma: myself, yourself, ourselves e yourselves vêm dos possessivos, mas himself e themselves vêm dos pronomes objeto. “Hisself” e “theirselves” não existem no inglês padrão.
Subject and object are the same

Verbs that are reflexive in Portuguese but not in English
This is the biggest problem for Brazilians. Many verbs take “me” or “se” in Portuguese, but in English they have no reflexive pronoun at all. Saying “I woke myself up at seven” or “I need to concentrate myself” sounds strange.Esse é o maior problema para os brasileiros. Muitos verbos levam “me” ou “se” em português, mas em inglês não têm pronome reflexivo nenhum. Dizer “I woke myself up at seven” ou “I need to concentrate myself” soa estranho.

Emphasis and by myself
We also use reflexives for emphasis, meaning “pessoalmente” or “eu mesmo, sem ajuda”. By + reflexive means “alone” or “without help”, the same as on my own.Também usamos os reflexivos para dar ênfase, com o sentido de “pessoalmente” ou “eu mesmo, sem ajuda”. By + reflexivo significa “sozinho” ou “sem ajuda”, igual a on my own.

Each other: reciprocal pronouns
Portuguese uses “se” for two different ideas: “eles se olharam no espelho” (each one looked at himself) and “eles se olharam” (one looked at the other). English separates them: themselves for the first idea and each other for the second.O português usa “se” para duas ideias diferentes: “eles se olharam no espelho” (cada um olhou para si mesmo) e “eles se olharam” (um olhou para o outro). O inglês separa as duas: themselves para a primeira ideia e each other para a segunda.
themselves (reflexive)

B2 Nuance, prepositions and register
At B2, the challenge is knowing when NOT to use a reflexive, how to use reciprocal forms in more complex sentences, and how to avoid the overuse of myself that many native speakers also fall into.No B2, o desafio é saber quando NÃO usar o reflexivo, como usar as formas recíprocas em frases mais complexas e como evitar o uso exagerado de myself, um erro que muitos nativos também cometem.
After prepositions of place
After prepositions of place or position, we normally use the object pronoun, not the reflexive, even when it refers to the subject. But after verbs + prepositions like look at, talk to, be proud of and take care of, the reflexive is necessary.Depois de preposições de lugar ou posição, normalmente usamos o pronome objeto, e não o reflexivo, mesmo quando ele se refere ao sujeito. Mas depois de verbos com preposição como look at, talk to, be proud of e take care of, o reflexivo é necessário.

Reflexive changes the meaning

Each other, one another and each other’s
One another means the same as each other. It is a little more formal and is often preferred for groups of more than two people. Both have a possessive form: each other’s and one another’s. The verb itself does not change: “ajudar-se” is simply help each other. One another significa o mesmo que each other. É um pouco mais formal e muitas vezes é preferido para grupos de mais de duas pessoas. Os dois têm forma possessiva: each other’s e one another’s. O verbo em si não muda: “ajudar-se” é simplesmente help each other.

Meet, kiss, marry, fight
With verbs that are naturally reciprocal, English often leaves out each other: We met in 2015. They kissed. They got married. Adding each other is possible with some of them, but it is often unnecessary.Com verbos que já são recíprocos por natureza, o inglês muitas vezes omite each other: We met in 2015. (Nós nos conhecemos em 2015.) They kissed. (Eles se beijaram.) They got married. (Eles se casaram.) Acrescentar each other é possível com alguns deles, mas muitas vezes é desnecessário.
Myself instead of I or me
In emails and meetings, many people use myself because it sounds more polite or formal: “Please contact John or myself.” In careful English, a reflexive needs a subject that refers to the same person, so the correct forms are me (object) and I (subject).Em e-mails e reuniões, muita gente usa myself porque parece mais educado ou formal: “Please contact John or myself.” No inglês cuidadoso, o reflexivo precisa de um sujeito que se refira à mesma pessoa, então as formas corretas são me (objeto) e I (sujeito).
