Zero and First Conditionals and Time Clauses

Condicionais Zero e PrimeiraConditionals and WishesA2–B1+

The zero and first conditionals help you talk about facts, routines and real possibilities in the future: If you heat ice, it melts and If it rains, we’ll stay home. Together with time clauses (when, as soon as, until), they are among the most useful structures in English, and among the most tricky for Brazilians. As condicionais zero e primeira ajudam você a falar de fatos, rotinas e possibilidades reais no futuro: If you heat ice, it melts (Se você aquece o gelo, ele derrete) e If it rains, we’ll stay home (Se chover, vamos ficar em casa).

A2 Zero and first conditional: form and use

A conditional sentence has two parts: the if-clause (the condition) and the main clause (the result). The tense we use depends on the meaning: a general truth or a possible future situation.

Zero conditional: facts and routines

We use the zero conditional for things that are always true: scientific facts, rules and habits. Both clauses are in the present simple, and if means almost the same as when. As duas orações ficam no presente simples, e if significa quase o mesmo que when.

If+present simple,present simple
  • If you heat water to 100°C, it boils. (Se você aquece a água a 100°C, ela ferve.)
  • If I drink coffee at night, I can’t sleep.
  • Plants die if they don’t get water. (As plantas morrem se não recebem água.)

First conditional: real future possibilities

We use the first conditional for a specific situation in the future that is possible or likely. The if-clause takes the present simple, even though it refers to the future, and the main clause takes will + base form. A oração com if fica no presente simples, mesmo falando do futuro, e a oração principal usa will + forma base.

If+present simple,will / won’t+base form
  • If it rains on Saturday, we’ll watch a movie at home.
  • If you study hard, you’ll pass the test.
  • She won’t come if her boss doesn’t let her leave early.

The Portuguese trap

Portuguese uses the future subjunctive: “se chover”, “se você estudar”. English uses the present simple, never will, after if. ✗ If it will rain, … ✓ If it rains, …O português usa o futuro do subjuntivo: “se chover”, “se você estudar”. O inglês usa o presente simples, nunca will, depois de if. ✗ If it will rain, … ✓ If it rains, …

Order and comma

The clauses can go in either order. When the if-clause comes first, use a comma. When the main clause comes first, no comma: We’ll stay home if it rains. As orações podem vir em qualquer ordem. Quando a oração com if vem primeiro, use vírgula. Quando a oração principal vem primeiro, sem vírgula: We’ll stay home if it rains.

B1 Time clauses, unless, and zero vs first

The same rule applies to time clauses about the future: after when, as soon as, before, after, until and while, use the present simple, not will. The main clause still uses will, going to or an imperative.A mesma regra vale para as orações temporais que falam do futuro: depois de when, as soon as, before, after, until e while, use o presente simples, não will. A oração principal continua com will, going to ou um imperativo.

when / as soon as / until / before / after+present simple,will / imperative
  • I’ll call you as soon as I arrive in Porto Alegre.
  • When you finish the exercise, show it to me. (Quando terminar o exercício, me mostre.)
  • We’ll wait here until the rain stops. (Vamos esperar aqui até a chuva parar.)
  • Brush your teeth before you go to bed. (Escove os dentes antes de ir dormir.)

If or when?

if

We are not sure it will happen.Não temos certeza de que vai acontecer.

If I see Ana, I’ll give her the book. (Se eu vir a Ana, entrego o livro a ela.)

when

We are sure it will happen.Temos certeza de que vai acontecer.

When I see Ana tomorrow, I’ll give her the book. (Quando eu vir a Ana amanhã, entrego o livro a ela.)

Unless = if … not

Unless means if … not (“a menos que”, “a não ser que”). The verb after unless is affirmative, because the negative idea is already in the word.

  • You’ll miss the bus unless you leave now.
  • Unless it’s really important, don’t call me during the meeting.

Other forms in the main clause

The main clause does not always use will. We can use an imperative, can, may / might or should to give instructions, permission, possibility or advice.A oração principal nem sempre usa will. Podemos usar um imperativo, can, may / might ou should para dar instruções, permissão, possibilidade ou conselho.

Main clauseExamplePortuguês
will (prediction)If you eat all that, you’ll feel sick.
imperative (instruction)If you feel sick, call me.Se você passar mal, me liga.
can (permission)If you finish early, you can go home.Se terminar cedo, pode ir para casa.
might (possibility)If we hurry, we might catch the train.
should (advice)If you have a fever, you should see a doctor.

B1+ Present perfect in time clauses, provided that, in case

At B1+, you can make your conditions and time clauses more precise. Choose the tense in the time clause carefully, and replace if with more specific conjunctions.

Present perfect after when, as soon as, after

Use the present perfect in the time clause to show that the first action will be complete before the second starts. It is like “depois que eu tiver terminado”.Use o present perfect na oração temporal para mostrar que a primeira ação estará completa antes de a segunda começar. É como “depois que eu tiver terminado”.

  • I’ll lend you the book when I’ve finished it. (Eu te empresto o livro quando tiver terminado.)
  • As soon as we’ve checked the results, we’ll email the students.

As long as, provided that, in case

ConjunctionMeaningExamplePortuguês
as long as / so long asonly ifYou can borrow my car as long as you drive carefully.
provided / providing (that)only if (more formal)The trip will happen provided that enough students sign up.A viagem vai acontecer contanto que alunos suficientes se inscrevam.
in caseas a precautionTake an umbrella in case it rains.Leve um guarda-chuva caso chova.
otherwiseif not (new sentence)Hurry up. Otherwise, we’ll be late.Anda logo. Senão, vamos chegar atrasados.

In case is not if

I’ll take a jacket if it gets cold: I take it only when it gets cold. I’ll take a jacket in case it gets cold: I take it now, as a precaution. Brazilians often translate “caso” as in case when they mean if.I’ll take a jacket if it gets cold: só levo quando esfriar. I’ll take a jacket in case it gets cold: levo agora, por precaução. Os brasileiros muitas vezes traduzem “caso” como in case quando querem dizer if.

If … will and should for politeness

There are two exceptions to “no will after if”. If you will / would is a polite request or shows willingness. If … should, or the inversion Should you…, makes a condition less likely and more formal, common in emails.Há duas exceções à regra “sem will depois de if”. If you will / would é um pedido educado ou indica disposição. If … should, ou a inversão Should you…, torna a condição menos provável e mais formal, algo comum em e-mails.

  • If you’ll wait here, the doctor will see you in five minutes.
  • If you should need any help, please contact our office.
  • Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to call.

Teacher’s tip

In emails to universities or companies, Should you need further information, I would be happy to help is a polished way to finish. It sounds professional without being stiff.Em e-mails para universidades ou empresas, Should you need further information, I would be happy to help (Caso precise de mais informações, terei prazer em ajudar) é uma forma elegante de encerrar. Soa profissional sem ser rígido.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these
