Used To, Be Used To, Get Used To

Used To, Be Used To e Get Used ToModals, Imperative and Phrasal VerbsA2–B1+

Used to, be used to and get used to look almost the same, but they mean very different things: “costumava”, “estar acostumado” and “acostumar-se”. In this lesson you will learn to use each one correctly and stop saying “I use to” when you mean “eu costumo”.Used to, be used to e get used to parecem quase iguais, mas significam coisas bem diferentes: “costumava”, “estar acostumado” e “acostumar-se”. Nesta aula você vai aprender a usar cada um corretamente e parar de dizer “I use to” quando quer dizer “eu costumo”.

A2 Used to: past habits and states

We use used to + base verb for things that were true or happened regularly in the past but are not true now. It is like “eu costumava” or the Portuguese imperfect: “eu jogava”, “eu morava”.Usamos used to + verbo na forma base para coisas que eram verdade ou aconteciam com frequência no passado, mas não são mais. É como “eu costumava” ou o pretérito imperfeito: “eu jogava”, “eu morava”.

Subject+used to+base verb
  • When I was a child, I used to play in the street every afternoon. (Quando eu era criança, eu brincava na rua todas as tardes.)
  • My parents used to live in Belo Horizonte. (Meus pais moravam em Belo Horizonte.)
  • She used to have long hair, but now it’s short. (Ela tinha cabelo comprido, mas agora está curto.)
  • There used to be a cinema on this street. (Antigamente havia um cinema nesta rua.)

Negatives and questions

In negatives and questions, we use did, so the verb loses the -d: didn’t use to, Did you use to…? You can also say never used to.Em negativas e perguntas, usamos did, então o verbo perde o -d: didn’t use to, Did you use to…? Também dá para dizer never used to.

FormExamplePortuguês
affirmativeI used to eat a lot of sweets.Eu comia muito doce.
negativeI didn’t use to like vegetables.Eu não gostava de legumes.
negative with neverHe never used to study on weekends.Ele nunca estudava nos fins de semana.
questionDid you use to walk to school?Você ia a pé para a escola?
short answerYes, I did. / No, I didn’t.Ia, sim. / Não, não ia.

Used to or usually?

This is the most common mistake for Brazilians. Used to exists only in the past. For present habits (“eu costumo”), use usually + present simple. There is no “I use to” in the present.Esse é o erro mais comum dos brasileiros. Used to só existe no passado. Para hábitos no presente (“eu costumo”), use usually + presente simples. Não existe “I use to” no presente.

usually (present)

A habit that is true now.Um hábito que é verdade agora.

I usually go to the gym after work. (Eu costumo ir à academia depois do trabalho.)

used to (past)

A habit that was true before, but not now.Um hábito que era verdade antes, mas não é mais.

I used to go to the gym, but I stopped. (Eu ia à academia, mas parei.)

Teacher’s tip

To say that a past habit is over, add any more (also written anymore) to the present: I used to drink soda. I don’t drink it any more.Para dizer que um hábito do passado acabou, acrescente any more (também escrito anymore) ao presente: Eu tomava refrigerante. Não tomo mais.

B1 Be used to and get used to

Be used to means “estar acostumado”: something is normal and familiar for you. Get used to means “acostumar-se”: the process of something becoming normal. In both, to is a preposition, so it is followed by a noun, a pronoun or a verb in -ing, never by the base verb.Be used to significa “estar acostumado”: algo é normal e familiar para você. Get used to significa “acostumar-se”: o processo de algo se tornar normal. Nos dois, to é preposição, então vem seguido de substantivo, pronome ou verbo com -ing, nunca do verbo na forma base.

Subject+be / get used to+noun / -ing
  • I’m a nurse, so I’m used to working at night. (Sou enfermeira, então estou acostumada a trabalhar à noite.)
  • Lucas moved to Canada last year. He isn’t used to the cold yet. (O Lucas se mudou para o Canadá no ano passado. Ele ainda não está acostumado com o frio.)
  • Are you used to the new system? (Você já está acostumado com o novo sistema?)
  • Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it. (Não se preocupe, você vai se acostumar.)
  • It took me months to get used to living alone. (Levei meses para me acostumar a morar sozinho.)
StructureMeaningExamplePortuguês
used to + base verbpast habit or stateI used to work at night.Eu trabalhava à noite.
be used to + -ingit is normal for meI‘m used to working at night.Estou acostumado a trabalhar à noite.
get used to + -ingit is becoming normalI‘m getting used to working at night.Estou me acostumando a trabalhar à noite.

To + -ing

✗ I’m used to wake up early. ✓ I’m used to waking up early.Em be used to e get used to, o to é preposição, como em look forward to. Por isso o verbo vai para o -ing.

B1+ Tenses, would and other traps

Be used to and get used to in all tenses

Used to (the past habit) has only one form. But be used to and get used to change be and get to any tense. In the UK people say have got used to; in the US, have gotten used to.Used to (o hábito passado) tem uma forma só. Mas em be used to e get used to, be e get podem ir para qualquer tempo verbal. No Reino Unido se diz have got used to; nos Estados Unidos, have gotten used to.

  • It was hard at first, but I’m slowly getting used to driving on the left. (Foi difícil no começo, mas aos poucos estou me acostumando a dirigir do lado esquerdo.)
  • She has lived in Salvador for ten years, so she has got used to the heat. (Ela mora em Salvador há dez anos, então já se acostumou com o calor.)

  • We weren’t used to such spicy food when we arrived in Thailand. (A gente não estava acostumado com comida tão apimentada quando chegou à Tailândia.)

Used to or would?

Would can also describe repeated actions in the past, especially in stories and memories. But would does not work with states (be, have, live, like, know). For states, only used to is possible.Would também pode descrever ações repetidas no passado, principalmente em histórias e lembranças. Mas would não funciona com estados (be, have, live, like, know). Para estados, só used to é possível.

actions: used to or would

Both are correct for repeated actions.Os dois estão corretos para ações repetidas.

states: only used to

Would is wrong with states.Would está errado com estados.

My grandparents used to live in Minas Gerais. (Meus avós moravam em Minas Gerais.)

Something is used to do something

Be careful with the passive of the normal verb use (usar). This knife is used to cut bread means “esta faca é usada para cortar pão”. Here, to is part of the infinitive of purpose, so the base verb is correct. You can also say is used for cutting.Cuidado com a voz passiva do verbo comum use (usar). This knife is used to cut bread significa “esta faca é usada para cortar pão”. Aqui, to faz parte do infinitivo de finalidade, então o verbo na forma base está correto. Também dá para dizer is used for cutting.

Pronunciation

In used to, be used to and get used to, we say /juːst tə/, with an s sound, almost “iústa”. The verb use in the past (I used a pen) has a z sound: /juːzd/.Em used to, be used to e get used to, a pronúncia é /juːst tə/, com som de s, quase “iústa”.
