Advanced Modals: Will, Would and Should

Modais Avançados: Will, Would e ShouldModals, Imperative and Phrasal VerbsC1

You already know will for the future, would for conditionals and should for advice. At C1, these three modals do much more: they describe habits and annoying behaviour, make confident guesses, sound formal in emails and soften your opinions in essays.

C1 Habits, typical behaviour and refusals

Will can describe typical, predictable behaviour in the present, and would does the same for the past. This is not about the future: it is about what someone or something characteristically does.

  • My cat will sit by the door for hours, waiting for me to come home. (Minha gata fica horas sentada perto da porta, esperando eu chegar.)
  • On Sundays, my grandfather would make feijoada for the whole family.
  • Oil will float on water. (O óleo flutua na água.)

Stressed will and would: criticism

When we stress will or would in speech, the sentence becomes a complaint about an irritating habit. It is like saying “ele sempre faz isso, que coisa!”. In writing, the context shows the stress, and the full form (not the contraction) is used.

  • My brother will leave his wet towel on the bed, no matter how often I ask him not to.
  • “Felipe says the test was easy.” “Well, he would say that. He’s the teacher’s favourite.” Ele é o queridinho do professor.”)

Won’t and wouldn’t: refusal

Won’t and wouldn’t express refusal, by people and even by objects that “refuse” to work. Brazilians often say “the car doesn’t want to start”, which is a direct translation of “não quer pegar”. In English, won’t is the natural choice. Brasileiros costumam dizer “the car doesn’t want to start”, tradução direta de “não quer pegar”. Em inglês, o natural é won’t.

  • The car won’t start. I think the battery is dead. (O carro não quer pegar. Acho que a bateria arriou.)
  • I tried to warn her, but she wouldn’t listen.
  • The window wouldn’t open, so we had to call maintenance.

Would vs used to

Would for past habits only works with actions, never with states. You can say We would play football after school, but not “I would have a dog” or “She would live in Recife”. For states, use used to or the past simple. Você pode dizer We would play football after school, mas não “I would have a dog” nem “She would live in Recife”. Para estados, use used to ou o passado simples.

C1 Assumptions and deductions

Will and would can express confident assumptions about the present or the past, based on what we know. Will sounds very sure; would is a little more tentative and is common with estimates. Will e would podem expressar suposições confiantes sobre o presente ou o passado, com base no que sabemos. Will soa bem seguro; would é um pouco mais hesitante e é comum em estimativas.

Subject+will / would (have)+base verb / past participle
TimeExamplePortuguês
present, very sureThat will be the delivery guy. I ordered a pizza.Deve ser o entregador. Eu pedi uma pizza.
present, estimateShe would be about forty now, I’d say.Ela deve ter uns quarenta anos agora, eu diria.
past, very sureYou‘ll have heard the news by now.
past, estimateThat would have been in 2015, I think.Isso deve ter sido em 2015, eu acho.

Should for expectation

Should also makes a guess, but it means “if everything goes as expected”. Should have + past participle can mean the same about the past, not only regret.

  • The package should arrive by Friday. (O pacote deve chegar até sexta.)
  • Their flight left at six, so they should have landed in Lisbon by now.

Will, would or should?

That’ll be Ana means “I’m sure it’s Ana”. That should be Ana means “it’s Ana if she arrived on time, as planned”. That would be Ana is a softer, more polite guess. That’ll be Ana significa “tenho certeza de que é a Ana”. That should be Ana significa “é a Ana, se ela chegou na hora combinada”. That would be Ana é um palpite mais suave e educado.

C1 Formal and emotional should

Inversion: Should you need…

In formal writing, we can replace if with should and invert subject and verb. It is very common at the end of professional emails and in instructions.Na escrita formal, podemos trocar if por should e inverter sujeito e verbo.

Should+subject+base verb,main clause
  • Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
  • Should the flight be cancelled, passengers will receive a full refund. (Caso o voo seja cancelado, os passageiros receberão reembolso integral.)

Putative should: surprise, judgment and suggestions

After adjectives and nouns of emotion or judgment (odd, strange, surprising, a shame, important, essential), we often use should + base verb in the that-clause. It presents the idea as a thought, not just a fact. After suggest, recommend, insist, demand, it is common in the UK; in the US people usually drop it and use the bare base form.

surpriseIt’s odd that she should resign just before her promotion.É estranho que ela peça demissão logo antes da promoção.
regretIt’s a shame that you should feel that way.É uma pena que você se sinta assim.
importanceIt is essential that every candidate (should) register online.É fundamental que todos os candidatos se inscrevam pela internet.
suggestionThe doctor insisted that Pedro (should) rest for a week.O médico insistiu que o Pedro descansasse por uma semana.

Suggest + person

✗ I suggest him to see a lawyer. ✓ I suggest that he (should) see a lawyer. ✓ I suggest seeing a lawyer. Use that + (should) + verbo, ou suggest + -ing.

Rhetorical should

In questions with why and how, should can express irritation or rejection, like “por que eu deveria…?” or “como é que eu vou saber?”.Em perguntas com why e how, should pode expressar irritação ou rejeição, como “por que eu deveria…?” ou “como é que eu vou saber?”.

  • Why should I apologise? I didn’t do anything wrong. (Por que eu deveria pedir desculpas? Eu não fiz nada de errado.)
  • “Where are my keys?” “How should I know?” (“Cadê minhas chaves?” “E eu é que vou saber?”)

C1 Would and will for tact, hedging and the future in the past

Hedging opinions

Would makes opinions less direct. In essays, debates and meetings, phrases like I would argue that, It would seem that and I’d have thought sound confident but polite.Would deixa as opiniões menos diretas. Em redações, debates e reuniões, expressões como I would argue that (eu diria que), It would seem that (ao que tudo indica) e I’d have thought (eu imaginaria que) soam seguras, mas educadas.

  • I would argue that the results are not yet conclusive.
  • It would seem that the new policy has had little effect.
  • I’d have thought a bigger room would be better for the workshop.

Will and would after if: willingness

Normally we do not use will after if (“If it will rain” is wrong). But when will or would means willingness, it is correct and very polite, typical in hotels, shops and offices.Normalmente não usamos will depois de if (“If it will rain” está errado). Mas quando will ou would indica disposição, é correto e muito educado, típico em hotéis, lojas e escritórios.

  • If you’ll wait here a moment, I’ll call the manager.
  • If you would follow me, please, the meeting room is upstairs.

The future in the past

In narratives, would looks forward from a point in the past. It is common in biographies and stories, often with little did … know. É comum em biografias e histórias, muitas vezes com little did … know (mal sabia…).

  • In 1994, she started teaching in a small school in Piracicaba. She would later become the director. (Em 1994, ela começou a dar aulas numa pequena escola em Piracicaba. Mais tarde, ela se tornaria a diretora.)
  • Little did he know that this trip would change his life.

Teacher’s tip

In vestibular and proficiency texts, pay attention to would in narratives. It is often the future in the past (iria, viria a), not a conditional. Translating it as “faria” every time can change the meaning of the text.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ When I was a child, I would have a dog. ✓ When I was a child, I used to have a dog.Would para hábitos passados não funciona com estados como have, be, live, know.

✗ If it will rain tomorrow, we’ll cancel the trip. ✓ If it rains tomorrow, we’ll cancel the trip.Depois de if, will só aparece quando significa disposição ou boa vontade.

✗ If should you need help, call me. ✓ Should you need help, call me.Na inversão, should substitui o if; não use os dois.

✗ The car doesn’t want to start. ✓ The car won’t start.

✗ I suggest him to rest. ✓ I suggest that he (should) rest.Suggest não aceita pessoa + to-infinitivo.
