In Portuguese, we use “fazer” for almost everything. In English, “fazer” is split between do and make, and choosing the wrong one is one of the most common mistakes Brazilians make. Learn the general rule first, then the fixed combinations that natives use every day.
A2 The basic difference
As a general rule, do is for activities, tasks and work: the action itself. Make is for creating or producing something new that did not exist before. Both are irregular: do – did – done and make – made – made.Como regra geral, do é para atividades, tarefas e trabalho: a ação em si. Make é para criar ou produzir algo novo, que não existia antes. Os dois são irregulares: do – did – done e make – made – made.
do = activity
The focus is on the task or the action.O foco está na tarefa ou na ação.
I do my homework after lunch. (Faço minha lição depois do almoço.)
make = creation
The focus is on the result, the product.O foco está no resultado, no produto.
I make a cake every Sunday. (Faço um bolo todo domingo.)
Do: tasks, housework and general actions
- Can you do the dishes tonight? (Você pode lavar a louça hoje à noite?)
- I do exercise three times a week. (Eu faço exercício três vezes por semana.)
- What are you doing this weekend? Nothing special. (O que você vai fazer neste fim de semana? Nada de especial.)
- She did a great job on the presentation. (Ela fez um ótimo trabalho na apresentação.)
Make: food, drinks, objects and sounds

- I’ll make some coffee. Do you want some? (Vou fazer um café. Você quer?)
- Please don’t make noise. The baby is sleeping. (Por favor, não faça barulho. O bebê está dormindo.)
- I made a mistake in the test. (Eu cometi um erro na prova.)
Do is also an auxiliary
Do is both a main verb and an auxiliary. In What do you do?, the first do is the auxiliary for the question and the second is the main verb. The question asks about your job.Do é tanto verbo principal quanto auxiliar. Em What do you do?, o primeiro do é o auxiliar da pergunta e o segundo é o verbo principal. A pergunta quer saber a sua profissão.
