Infinitivos Reduzidos-ing and the InfinitiveB2

“Do you want to come?” “Yes, I want.” This answer sounds incomplete to a native speaker. In English, we avoid repeating a verb by keeping only to: Yes, I’d love to. This is the reduced infinitive, and it makes your English sound much more natural.“Do you want to come?” “Yes, I want.” Essa resposta soa incompleta para um nativo. Em inglês, evitamos repetir um verbo mantendo só o to: Yes, I’d love to.

B2 Keeping only “to”

When the verb is already clear from the context, we drop it and keep to. This happens after verbs that take an infinitive: want, would like, love, hope, try, need, plan, promise, forget, refuse, and after have to, be going to, used to, ought to.Quando o verbo já está claro pelo contexto, nós o tiramos e mantemos o to. Isso acontece depois de verbos que pedem infinitivo: want, would like, love, hope, try, need, plan, promise, forget, refuse, e depois de have to, be going to, used to, ought to.

Subject+verb+to+(verb understood)
  • “Are you coming to the barbecue?” “I’d love to, but I have to work.” (“Você vem para o churrasco?” “Eu adoraria, mas tenho que trabalhar.”)
  • I didn’t call my grandmother yesterday. I forgot to. (Não liguei para minha avó ontem. Esqueci.)
  • You can borrow my car if you need to.
  • I wanted to go to the concert, but my parents didn’t let me.
  • “Have you booked the hotel?” “Not yet, but I’m going to.” (“Você já reservou o hotel?” “Ainda não, mas vou reservar.”)

Portuguese drops more than English

In Portuguese we say “Quero”, “Esqueci”, “Vou”. In English, want, forget and be going to need to at the end: ✗ Yes, I want. ✓ Yes, I want to.Em português dizemos “Quero”, “Esqueci”, “Vou”. Em inglês, want, forget e be going to precisam do to no final: ✗ Yes, I want. ✓ Yes, I want to.

B2 Keeping “be” and “have”

If the omitted verb is be, we keep to be. With a perfect infinitive, we keep to have. Without them, the sentence is incomplete.Se o verbo omitido for be, mantemos to be. Com um infinitivo perfeito, mantemos to have. Sem eles, a frase fica incompleta.

  • She isn’t very organised, but she wants to be.
  • I’m not a morning person, but I used to be.
  • He says he finished the project, but he doesn’t seem to have.
main verbI didn’t go, but I meant to.Eu não fui, mas era minha intenção.
be + complementHe’s not ready, but he ought to be.Ele não está pronto, mas deveria estar.
have + participleThey haven’t replied, but they’re supposed to have.
negativeI’ll try not to.Vou tentar não fazer isso.

B2 When to drop “to” as well

After want and like in clauses with if, when, what, whatever and as, we can drop to completely: Come whenever you want. Do as you like. In the main clause, however, to is still necessary.Depois de want e like em orações com if, when, what, whatever e as, podemos tirar o to completamente: Come whenever you want. (Venha quando quiser.) Do as you like. (Faça como quiser.) Na oração principal, porém, o to continua necessário.

to optional

After if, when, what, as.Depois de if, when, what, as.

You can stay here if you want (to). (Você pode ficar aqui se quiser.)

to necessary

In a direct answer or main clause.Numa resposta direta ou na oração principal.

“Can you help?” “I’d like to.” (“Você pode ajudar?” “Eu gostaria.”)

Modals and auxiliaries never take to, so the reduced form is just the modal: “Can you swim?” “Yes, I can.” The same applies to make and let, which take a base verb: I wanted to leave early, but my boss wouldn’t let me.Modais e auxiliares nunca levam to, então a forma reduzida é só o modal: “Can you swim?” “Yes, I can.” I wanted to leave early, but my boss wouldn’t let me.

  • Take as many cookies as you like. (Pegue quantos biscoitos quiser.)
  • “Can you come tomorrow?” “Sorry, I can’t.” (“Você pode vir amanhã?” “Desculpa, não posso.”)

B2 Pronunciation and style

In the middle of a sentence, to is weak and sounds like /tə/. At the end of a sentence, in a reduced infinitive, it is pronounced with its full vowel: /tuː/. This small detail helps listeners understand that a verb was omitted.

  • I didn’t want to tell her, but I had to.
  • “Will you call me when you land?” “I promise to.” (“Você me liga quando pousar?” “Prometo.”)

Polite answers

Reduced infinitives are perfect for invitations. Accept with I’d love to or I’d be happy to. Decline with I’d like to, but… or I wish I could, but…Os infinitivos reduzidos são perfeitos para convites. Aceite com I’d love to (Adoraria) ou I’d be happy to (Com prazer). Recuse com I’d like to, but… (Eu gostaria, mas…) ou I wish I could, but… (Quem me dera, mas…).

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ “Do you want to dance?” “Yes, I want.” ✓ “Yes, I want to.”Depois de want numa resposta, mantenha o to.

✗ I’m not rich, but I’d like to. ✓ I’m not rich, but I’d like to be.Quando o verbo omitido é be, mantenha to be.

✗ “Can you drive?” “Yes, I can to.” ✓ “Yes, I can.”Modais não levam to.

✗ I wanted to go, but she didn’t let me to. ✓ …but she didn’t let me.Let é seguido do verbo sem to, então a forma reduzida também não tem to.

✗ I’ll try to not. ✓ I’ll try not to.Na forma negativa, o not vem antes do to.
