You already know the present continuous for actions happening now. But “I’m meeting Ana tomorrow” is about the future! In this lesson you will learn how native speakers use the present continuous for fixed arrangements, how it differs from going to and will, and which time expressions make the meaning clear. Mas “I’m meeting Ana tomorrow” fala do futuro!
A2 Form and basic use
The form is exactly the same as the present continuous you already know: am, is, are + verb-ing. What changes is the meaning. When we add a future time expression, the sentence talks about something we have arranged with other people or organised in advance.
- I’m meeting Ana for lunch tomorrow. (Vou almoçar com a Ana amanhã. Já combinamos.)
- We’re flying to Recife on Friday. (Vamos voar para Recife na sexta. As passagens estão compradas.)
- My sister is starting her new job next Monday.
- They’re getting married in December. (Eles vão se casar em dezembro.)
Think of your diary or calendar. If the event is written there, with a time, a place or other people involved, the present continuous is a great choice. Notice that Portuguese often uses the simple present here: “Viajo amanhã”, “Começo segunda”.Pense na sua agenda.
Negative and questions
| Form | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | I‘m seeing the dentist at 3. | Tenho dentista às 3. |
| Negative | We aren’t coming to the party. | A gente não vai à festa. |
| Question | Are you doing anything tonight? | Você vai fazer alguma coisa hoje à noite? |
| Wh- question | What time is he arriving? | Que horas ele chega? |
Teacher’s tip
“What are you doing this weekend?” is the most natural way to ask about someone’s plans. It’s friendlier and more common than “What will you do this weekend?”“What are you doing this weekend?” What will you do this weekend?”
Time expressions
Without a time expression, “I’m working” usually means right now. With one, it means the future. That’s why words like tonight, tomorrow, next week, on Saturday and at 8 are so important. Sometimes the context alone is enough: “What are you doing for Christmas?”Sem uma expressão de tempo, “I’m working” geralmente significa agora. Com ela, significa futuro. Por isso palavras como tonight, tomorrow, next week, on Saturday e at 8 são tão importantes. Às vezes o contexto já basta: “What are you doing for Christmas?”
- I’m working now. (Estou trabalhando agora.)
- I’m working on Saturday. (Vou trabalhar no sábado.)
B1 Arrangements, plans and timetables
Present continuous or going to?
Both talk about decisions made before speaking, and often both are possible. The difference is how fixed the plan is. Going to shows an intention that exists in your head. The present continuous shows an arrangement that is already organised: a booking, a ticket, an appointment, a date agreed with someone.
Going to: intention
I want to and I’ve decided, but nothing is booked.
I’m going to visit Portugal one day. (Um dia vou visitar Portugal.)
Present continuous: arrangement
It’s organised, with a date and details.Está organizado, com data e detalhes.
I’m visiting Portugal in May. I’ve booked the hotel. (Vou a Portugal em maio. Já reservei o hotel.)
We don’t normally use the present continuous for things we can’t arrange, like the weather or predictions. ✗ It’s raining tomorrow. ✓ It’s going to rain tomorrow. We also avoid it with state verbs such as be, know, like and have (meaning possession).Normalmente não usamos o presente contínuo para coisas que não dá para combinar, como o tempo ou previsões. “It’s raining tomorrow” está errado; o certo é “It’s going to rain tomorrow”. Também evitamos esse uso com verbos de estado, como be, know, like e have (no sentido de possuir).
Present continuous or present simple?
For official timetables and schedules, such as trains, flights, classes, films and shows, we use the present simple. For our personal arrangements, we use the present continuous. They often appear together.
- I’m taking the 7:30 bus to Campinas. It arrives at 8:40. (Vou pegar o ônibus das 7h30 para Campinas. Ele chega às 8h40.)
- The film starts at 9, so we’re having dinner at 7. (O filme começa às 9, então vamos jantar às 7.)
- Our English class finishes at 6 and I’m meeting Bruno after that.
|---|---|---|---|
| present continuous | I‘m having lunch with my boss on Friday. | Vou almoçar com meu chefe na sexta. | compromisso combinado |
| going to | I‘m going to ask for a raise. | Vou pedir um aumento. | intenção, plano |
| will | OK, I‘ll ask him today. | Tá bom, vou pedir hoje. | decisão na hora |
| present simple | The meeting starts at 10. | A reunião começa às 10. | horário fixo |
Going and coming
With go and come, native speakers usually prefer the present continuous to “going to go” or “going to come”, because it sounds lighter and more natural.Com go e come, os falantes nativos geralmente preferem o presente contínuo a “going to go” ou “going to come”, porque soa mais leve e natural.
- Are you coming to Júlia’s party on Saturday? (Você vai à festa da Júlia no sábado?)
- We’re going to the beach next weekend. (Vamos à praia no próximo fim de semana.)
- I’m not going out tonight. I’m too tired. (Não vou sair hoje à noite. Estou cansada demais.)
Refusing an invitation
The present continuous is perfect for polite excuses, because it shows you already have a commitment: “Sorry, I can’t. I’m visiting my grandparents on Sunday.”O presente contínuo é perfeito para desculpas educadas, porque mostra que você já tem um compromisso: “Desculpa, não dá. Vou visitar meus avós no domingo.”
Common Mistakes
Avoid these
✗ I meet my doctor tomorrow at 10. ✓ I’m meeting my doctor tomorrow at 10.Em português dizemos “vou ao médico amanhã”, mas em inglês o compromisso pessoal pede o presente contínuo, e não o presente simples.
✗ It’s snowing in Gramado next week. ✓ It’s going to snow in Gramado next week.O tempo não é um compromisso; para previsões, use going to ou will.
✗ What will you do tonight? ✓ What are you doing tonight?Não está errado, mas para perguntar sobre planos o presente contínuo soa muito mais natural.
✗ I’m having a car next year. ✓ I’m going to have a car next year.
