Until, By, Up To, As Far As

Como Dizer Até em InglêsPrepositionsA2–B1

In Portuguese, the little word “até” does many different jobs: “até as 6”, “até sexta”, “até 10 pessoas”, “até a praia”, “até amanhã” and even “até a minha avó”. English uses a different word for each job: until, by, up to, as far as, see you and even. Learn which question each one answers and you will stop saying “send it until Friday”.Em português, a palavrinha “até” faz muitos trabalhos diferentes: “até as 6”, “até sexta”, “até 10 pessoas”, “até a praia”, “até amanhã” e até “até a minha avó”. O inglês usa uma palavra diferente para cada trabalho: until, by, up to, as far as, see you e even. Aprenda a que pergunta cada uma responde e você nunca mais vai dizer “send it until Friday”.

A2 Until: an action that continues

Use until when something continues and then stops at a certain moment. Think of a line that goes all the way to the end point. In informal English you will also hear till, with the same meaning.Use until quando algo continua e depois para num determinado momento. Pense numa linha que vai até o ponto final. No inglês informal você também vai ouvir till, com o mesmo sentido.

action that continues+until+end point (time or event)
  • I work until six o’clock. (Trabalho até as seis.)
  • We waited until the rain stopped. (Esperamos até a chuva parar.)
  • The store is open until 10 p.m. (A loja fica aberta até as 22h.)
  • I’m staying in Lisbon till Sunday. (Vou ficar em Lisboa até domingo.)

a.m. and p.m.

a.m. (ante meridiem) means before noon and p.m. (post meridiem) means after noon. English speakers use them much more than the 24-hour clock: 10 p.m. = 22h.a.m. (ante meridiem) significa antes do meio-dia e p.m. (post meridiem) significa depois do meio-dia. Os falantes de inglês usam essas siglas muito mais do que o relógio de 24 horas: 10 p.m. = 22h.

From … to / until

To give the start and the end of a period, use from … to or from … until. With days of the week and opening hours, to is very common. Never use both words together (“until to”).Para dar o começo e o fim de um período, use from … to ou from … until. Com dias da semana e horários de funcionamento, to é muito comum. Nunca use as duas palavras juntas (“until to”).

  • The museum is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. (O museu abre das 9h às 17h.)

Brazilians often try “until tomorrow” for “até amanhã”, but English speakers say see you + the time. Until appears only in a few fixed goodbyes, like until next time.Os brasileiros muitas vezes tentam “until tomorrow” para “até amanhã”, mas os falantes de inglês dizem see you + o momento. Until aparece só em algumas despedidas fixas, como until next time (até a próxima).

B1 By: a deadline

Use by for a deadline: the action happens at any moment before or at that time, and it does not continue. In Portuguese we also say “até” (“entregue até sexta”), which is why Brazilians often choose until by mistake.Use by para um prazo: a ação acontece em qualquer momento antes ou naquele horário, e não continua. by

Not until: “só” + a time

A negative verb + until is the natural way to say that something happens only at a certain time, not before. Portuguese usually says this with “só”.Um verbo na negativa + until é o jeito natural de dizer que algo acontece só a partir de um certo momento, não antes. O português normalmente diz isso com “só”.

Up to: a maximum

As far as: distance

For distance, “até a praia” or “até a próxima estação”, use as far as, or simply to when you mean the destination. The fixed expression as far as I know means “que eu saiba”.Para distância, “até a praia” ou “até a próxima estação”, use as far as, ou simplesmente to quando você fala do destino.
