Words like when, while, before, after, until and as soon as tell us when something happens. They join two ideas in one sentence and put events in order, in stories, plans and everyday conversation. They also follow one rule that surprises many Brazilians: no will after them.Palavras como when, while, before, after, until e as soon as dizem quando algo acontece. Elas juntam duas ideias numa frase só e colocam os acontecimentos em ordem, em histórias, planos e conversas do dia a dia. Elas também seguem uma regra que surpreende muitos brasileiros: nada de will depois delas.
A2 The basic time words
A time clause is the part of the sentence that starts with a time word. It needs a subject and a verb, and it can’t stand alone: when I got home is only half a sentence. Join it to a main clause: When I got home, I had dinner.Uma oração temporal é a parte da frase que começa com uma palavra de tempo. Ela precisa de sujeito e verbo, e não fica sozinha: when I got home (quando cheguei em casa) é só metade de uma frase. Junte com a oração principal: When I got home, I had dinner. (Quando cheguei em casa, jantei.)
| Word | Example | Português |
|---|---|---|
| when (quando) | I was happy when I saw the results. | Fiquei feliz quando vi o resultado. |
| while (enquanto) | I listen to podcasts while I cook. | Escuto podcasts enquanto cozinho. |
| before (antes de) | Brush your teeth before you go to bed. | Escove os dentes antes de ir dormir. |
| after (depois que) | We went out after the rain stopped. | Saímos depois que a chuva parou. |
| until / till (até (que)) | Wait here until I come back. | Espere aqui até eu voltar. |
| as soon as (assim que) | Call me as soon as you land. | Me ligue assim que pousar. |
Where does the comma go?
The time clause can come first or second. The meaning doesn’t change, but the comma does.A oração temporal pode vir primeiro ou depois. O sentido não muda, mas a vírgula muda.
Time clause first: comma
Put a comma after the time clause.Coloque vírgula depois da oração temporal.

Main clause first: no comma
No comma is needed.Não precisa de vírgula.

When or while?
In stories, while usually goes with a longer action in progress (past continuous), and when with a short action that interrupts it (past simple).Nas histórias, o while costuma acompanhar uma ação mais longa em andamento (past continuous), e o when uma ação curta que interrompe (past simple).

No will after time words
When you talk about the future, use the present after when, before, after, until, as soon as. The main clause takes will, the time clause doesn’t: I’ll call you when I arrive.Quando você fala do futuro, use o presente depois de when, before, after, until, as soon as. A oração principal leva will, a oração temporal não: I’ll call you when I arrive. (Eu te ligo quando eu chegar.)
Teacher’s tip: “quando eu chegar”
In Portuguese we use a special future form: “quando eu chegar“, “assim que você souber“. English has no such form, so it simply uses the present: when I arrive, as soon as you know.Em português usamos uma forma especial de futuro: “quando eu chegar“, “assim que você souber“. O inglês não tem essa forma, então usa simplesmente o presente: when I arrive, as soon as you know.
