The Portuguese Subjunctive in English

O Subjuntivo do Português em InglêsThe SubjunctiveB1–B2

Portuguese uses the subjunctive all the time: quero que você venha, quando eu chegar, se eu fosse você. English almost never has a special form for this, so translating word for word leads to classic mistakes. Here is what English uses instead, one Portuguese pattern at a time.O português usa o subjuntivo o tempo todo: quero que você venha, quando eu chegar, se eu fosse você.

B1 Que eu faça: wanting, hoping and asking

After querer que, pedir que and esperar que, Portuguese changes the verb to the subjunctive. English does not. It either uses verb + person + to + verb, or a normal present tense after hope.

want / ask / need / expect+person+to + base form
EnglishPortuguêsPattern
I want you to come.Quero que você venha.want + person + to
She asked me to wait.Ela pediu que eu esperasse.ask + person + to
I need you to help me.Preciso que você me ajude.need + person + to
I hope you like it.Espero que você goste.hope + present
I hope everything goes well.Espero que dê tudo certo.hope + present
I hope it doesn’t rain.Tomara que não chova.hope + present

Want that? Never

✗ I want that you come. ✓ I want you to come. Com want, nunca use that. Coloque a pessoa logo depois do verbo e use to: I want you to come (Quero que você venha).

Talvez, pode ser que, é bom que

Other common triggers in Portuguese also become simple, normal verbs in English. Talvez is maybe or might, and é melhor que is often had better or should.

  • Maybe he’ll call later. (Talvez ele ligue mais tarde.)
  • It might rain this afternoon. (Pode ser que chova hoje à tarde.)
  • You’d better leave now, or you’ll miss the bus. (É melhor você sair agora, senão vai perder o ônibus.)
  • It’s important for everyone to read the rules. (É importante que todos leiam as regras.)
  • I doubt she knows the answer. (Duvido que ela saiba a resposta.)
  • I’m glad you’re here. (Fico feliz que você esteja aqui.)

B1 Quando eu for, se eu puder: the future subjunctive

Portuguese has a future subjunctive (quando eu for, se você quiser). English uses the simple present after when, if, as soon as, before, after, until and while, even when we talk about the future. Will goes only in the other part of the sentence.O português tem o futuro do subjuntivo (quando eu for, se você quiser). O inglês usa o presente simples depois de when, if, as soon as, before, after, until e while, mesmo quando falamos do futuro.

when / if / as soon as+present, will + base form
EnglishPortuguêsWord
When I arrive, I’ll call you.Quando eu chegar, te ligo.when
If you need anything, let me know.Se você precisar, me avisa.if
As soon as he finishes, we’ll leave.Assim que ele terminar, a gente sai.as soon as
Stay here until I come back.Fique aqui até eu voltar.until
Do whatever you want.Faça o que você quiser.whatever
While you’re here, enjoy it.Enquanto você estiver aqui, aproveite.while

No will after when and if

✗ When I will arrive, I’ll call you. ✓ When I arrive, I’ll call you.Pense assim: onde o português usa o futuro do subjuntivo (chegar, puder, quiser), o inglês usa o presente simples. Nada de will depois de when, if e as soon as.

For imaginary situations, Portuguese uses fosse, tivesse, pudesse. English uses the past simple, and were for the verb to be. The meaning is present or future, even though the form looks past.Para situações imaginárias, o português usa fosse, tivesse, pudesse. O inglês usa o passado simples, e were para o verbo to be.

I wanted you to meet my parents. (Eu queria que você conhecesse meus pais.)

queria que + unreal wish

Something impossible or unlikely now.Algo impossível ou improvável agora.

I wish my parents lived closer. (Queria que meus pais morassem mais perto.)

Se eu tivesse feito: the past of the past

When the imaginary situation is in the past (se eu tivesse estudado), English uses the past perfect: had + past participle. The result uses would have. O resultado usa would have.

  • If I had studied more, I would have passed. (Se eu tivesse estudado mais, teria passado.)
  • I wish I had brought an umbrella. (Queria ter trazido um guarda-chuva.)
  • She looked as if she had seen a ghost.

These linking words always take the subjunctive in Portuguese. In English, the verb after them is completely normal.

When English does have a subjunctive

In formal English, after words like essential, insist and recommend, you will see the base form: It is essential that he arrive on time. This is the real English subjunctive, and it is common in exams and official texts. No inglês formal, depois de palavras como essential, insist e recommend, você vai ver a forma base do verbo: It is essential that he arrive on time (É essencial que ele chegue no horário).

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ I want that you help me. ✓ I want you to help me.Com want, use pessoa + to, nunca that.

✗ When you will finish, call me. ✓ When you finish, call me.Depois de when, use o presente, mesmo falando do futuro.

✗ I hope you will can come. ✓ I hope you can come. Can nunca vem depois de will. Depois de hope, use can sozinho.

✗ If I would have money, I would buy it. ✓ If I had money, I would buy it.O would não vai na parte do if; ali use o passado.

✗ She asked that I wait outside. (informal) ✓ She asked me to wait outside. No dia a dia, ask + pessoa + to é o mais natural.

✗ Maybe he come tomorrow. ✓ Maybe he’ll come tomorrow.Depois de maybe, use um verbo normal: he’ll come ou he comes.
