PIN and installments

Lembre também que pagar parcelado, tão comum no Brasil, não é uma opção normal no caixa da maioria das lojas nos Estados Unidos e no Reino Unido.

Saying prices and understanding tax

In everyday speech, people often drop the words “dollars” and “cents” and just say the numbers. With pounds, it is common to say the word “pounds” in the middle or to leave it out.Na fala do dia a dia, as pessoas muitas vezes deixam de lado as palavras “dollars” e “cents” e só dizem os números. Com libras, é comum dizer a palavra “pounds” no meio ou simplesmente omitir.

$19.99nineteen ninety-ninedezenove e noventa e nove
$4.50four fiftyquatro e cinquenta
£12.30twelve pounds thirty / twelve thirtydoze libras e trinta
€8eight eurosoito euros

Why is the total higher?

In the United States, the price on the tag usually does not include sales tax. The tax is added at the checkout, and the rate changes from state to state (a few states have no sales tax at all). In the United Kingdom, the price you see already includes VAT (Value Added Tax).Nos Estados Unidos, o preço da etiqueta normalmente não inclui o sales tax (imposto sobre vendas). O imposto é somado no caixa, e a taxa muda de estado para estado (alguns estados não cobram esse imposto). No Reino Unido, o preço que você vê já inclui o VAT (Value Added Tax, um imposto sobre o consumo).

Sales and discounts

Be careful: sale is a noun that means “promoção” or “venda”. The verb “vender” is sell. If something is on sale, it is cheaper than usual. If it is for sale, it is simply available to buy.Cuidado: sale é um substantivo que significa “promoção” ou “venda”. O verbo “vender” é sell. Se algo está on sale, está mais barato do que o normal.
