Is or Are? Agreement Traps

Is ou Are? Armadilhas de ConcordânciaSubject–Verb AgreementB1

Portuguese and English don’t always agree on what is singular and what is plural. In Portuguese we say a polícia chegou and as notícias são boas; in English it is the opposite: the police have arrived and the news is good. This post shows the agreement traps that come straight from Portuguese, so you can choose is or are without thinking twice.O português e o inglês nem sempre concordam sobre o que é singular e o que é plural. Em português dizemos a polícia chegou e as notícias são boas; em inglês é o contrário: the police have arrived e the news is good. Este post mostra as armadilhas de concordância que vêm direto do português, para você escolher entre is e are sem pensar duas vezes.

B1 Singular in Portuguese, plural in English

These words are singular in Portuguese, but their English equivalents take a plural verb. Translating word for word is exactly what causes the mistake.Estas palavras são singulares em português, mas os equivalentes em inglês levam verbo no plural. Traduzir palavra por palavra é justamente o que causa o erro.

PortuguêsEnglishTradução
a genteWe are going to the beach.A gente vai à praia.
a políciaThe police are looking for him.A polícia está procurando por ele.
o povoBrazilian people are very warm.O povo brasileiro é muito caloroso.
a calçaMy jeans are too long.Minha calça jeans está comprida demais.
o óculosMy glasses are on the table.Meus óculos estão na mesa.
a roupaMy clothes are still wet.Minha roupa ainda está molhada.

A gente = we

In Portuguese, a gente takes a singular verb (a gente vai, a gente tem). In English, it is simply we, so the verb is always plural: we are, we have, we were. Never “we is” or “we was”.Em português, a gente leva verbo no singular (a gente vai, a gente tem). Em inglês, é simplesmente we, então o verbo é sempre plural: we are, we have, we were. Nunca “we is” ou “we was”.

B1 Plural in Portuguese, singular in English

Now the opposite trap. These nouns are usually plural in Portuguese, but in English they are uncountable: they have no plural form and always take a singular verb.Agora a armadilha contrária. Estes substantivos costumam estar no plural em português, mas em inglês são incontáveis: não têm forma de plural e sempre levam verbo no singular.

PortuguêsEnglishTradução
as notíciasThe news is very bad today. As notícias estão muito ruins hoje.
os conselhosYour advice was really useful.Seus conselhos foram muito úteis.
as informaçõesThis information is confidential.Estas informações são confidenciais.
os móveisThe furniture is brand new.Os móveis são novinhos.
os cabelosHer hair is very long.O cabelo dela é muito comprido.
as lições de casaMy homework is finished.Minhas lições de casa estão prontas.

No -s, singular verb

Uncountable nouns never take -s and never go with these or many: say this information is, not “these informations are”. To count them, use a piece of: a piece of advice, two pieces of information.Substantivos incontáveis nunca levam -s e nunca vêm com these ou many: diga this information is, e não “these informations are”. Para contá-los, use a piece of: a piece of advice (um conselho), two pieces of information (duas informações).

B1 Everyone, nobody and most people

Todo mundo and o pessoal sound like many people, but in English everyone, everybody, nobody and each take a singular verb. Most people and most of my friends, on the other hand, are plural.Todo mundo e o pessoal dão a ideia de muitas pessoas, mas em inglês everyone, everybody, nobody e each levam verbo no singular. Já most people e most of my friends são plurais.

everyone / nobody + singular

Even when we think of a big group.Mesmo quando pensamos num grupo grande.

Everyone is waiting for you. (O pessoal está esperando você.)

most people + plural

Most of + plural noun is plural too. Most of + substantivo no plural também é plural.

Most people work on Saturdays here. (A maioria das pessoas trabalha aos sábados aqui.)

  • Everybody in my family loves football. (Todo mundo na minha família ama futebol.)
  • Nobody knows the answer. (Ninguém sabe a resposta.)
  • Each student has a different schedule. (Cada aluno tem um horário diferente.)
  • Most of my friends are on vacation. (A maioria dos meus amigos está de férias.)

B1 Tem and há: there is or there are?

In Portuguese, tem and há never change: tem um carro, tem dois carros. In English, there is and there are agree with the noun that follows, and the past is there was or there were. And remember: in this meaning, English never uses the verb have.Em português, tem e há nunca mudam: tem um carro, tem dois carros. Em inglês, there is e there are concordam com o substantivo que vem depois, e o passado é there was ou there were. E lembre: com esse sentido, o inglês nunca usa o verbo have.

  • There is a lot of traffic today. (Tem muito trânsito hoje.)
  • There are a lot of people at the mall. (Tem muita gente no shopping.)
  • There were three tests last week. (Teve três provas na semana passada.)
  • There wasn’t any milk in the fridge. (Não tinha leite na geladeira.)

Gente is plural

“Muita gente” is singular in Portuguese, but people is plural: ✗ There is a lot of people. ✓ There are a lot of people. ✗ Have many people here. ✓ There are many people here.“Muita gente” é singular em português, mas people é plural. E “tem” no sentido de “existe” é there is / there are, nunca have.

B1 When the subject is far from the verb

When there are other words between the subject and the verb, it is easy to agree with the wrong word. The verb agrees with the main word of the subject, not with the word that is closest to it.Quando há outras palavras entre o sujeito e o verbo, é fácil concordar com a palavra errada. O verbo concorda com a palavra principal do sujeito, e não com a palavra que está mais perto dele.

  • The price of the tickets is too high. (O preço dos ingressos está alto demais.)
  • The people who live next door are from Bahia. (As pessoas que moram ao lado são da Bahia.)
  • My friend who lives in Rio is a doctor. (Meu amigo que mora no Rio é médico.)
  • One of my teachers speaks four languages. (Um dos meus professores fala quatro idiomas.)

Teacher’s tip

Before you choose is or are, ask: “What is the subject in English?” Not in Portuguese. A polícia becomes the police (plural); as notícias becomes the news (singular). Make a short list of the words in this post and read it before every test.Antes de escolher is ou are, pergunte: “Qual é o sujeito em inglês?” Não em português. A polícia vira the police (plural); as notícias vira the news (singular). Faça uma listinha com as palavras deste post e leia antes de cada prova.
