Can you funciona bem com amigos, could you é seguro com qualquer pessoa e would you mind é perfeito quando você está pedindo um favor de verdade. Aqui você aprende a pedir, a pedir permissão e a responder sem soar grosseiro.

A2 Asking someone to do something

To ask someone to do something, use can you, could you or would you + the base form of the verb. The verb never takes “to”. Add please at the end or before the verb to sound even friendlier.Para pedir que alguém faça algo, use can you, could you ou would you + o verbo na forma base. O verbo nunca leva “to”.

Can / Could / Would you+base verb+(please)?
RequestHow it soundsPortuguês
Can you pass me the salt?informal: family and friendsVocê pode me passar o sal?
Could you send me the file, please?polite: safe with anyoneVocê poderia me mandar o arquivo, por favor?
Would you close the door, please?polite, a little more formalVocê poderia fechar a porta, por favor?
Could you possibly help me with this box?very polite: a bigger favorSerá que você poderia me ajudar com esta caixa?
  • Can you turn the music down a little? (Você pode abaixar um pouco a música?)
  • Could you repeat that, please? I didn’t catch it. (Você poderia repetir, por favor? Não entendi.)
  • Could you tell me where the bus stop is? (Você poderia me dizer onde fica o ponto de ônibus?)
  • Would you wait here for a moment, please?

Teacher’s tip

When you are not sure, choose could you. It is polite but not stiff, so it works with your boss, a waiter, a teacher or a stranger on the street.Quando estiver em dúvida, escolha could you.

A2 Asking for permission

To ask if you can do something, use can I, could I or may I + base verb. Can I is everyday English, could I is a bit more polite, and may I is the most formal: you hear it in shops, hotels, offices and classrooms.Para perguntar se você pode fazer algo, use can I, could I ou may I + verbo na forma base. Can I é o inglês do dia a dia, could I é um pouco mais educado e may I é o mais formal: você ouve em lojas, hotéis, escritórios e salas de aula.

  • Can I sit here? (Posso sentar aqui?)
  • Could I use your charger for a minute? (Eu poderia usar seu carregador um minutinho?)
  • May I come in? (Posso entrar?)
  • May I ask you a question? (Posso fazer uma pergunta?)

May is only for I and we

In requests, may goes with I or we: May I…? May we…? To ask another person to do something, use could you, never “may you”.Nos pedidos, may vai com I ou we: May I…? May we…? Para pedir que outra pessoa faça algo, use could you, nunca “may you”.

Saying yes and saying no

A simple “yes” can sound cold, and a simple “no” can sound rude. English speakers usually say yes with a friendly word and say no with an apology and a reason.

saying yes

Short and friendly.Curto e simpático.

Sure. / Of course. / No problem. / Go ahead. (Claro. / Com certeza. / Sem problema. / Fique à vontade.)

saying no

Apologize and give a reason.Peça desculpas e dê um motivo.

I’m sorry, but I need it right now. / I’m afraid not. (Desculpe, mas estou precisando dele agora. / Infelizmente, não.)

B1 Would you mind…?

Would you mind literally means “você se importaria”. It is very polite and common when you ask for a favor that takes some effort. The verb after it always ends in -ing.

Would you mind+verb + -ing+?
  • Would you mind opening the window? (Você se importaria de abrir a janela?)
  • Would you mind waiting a few minutes?
  • Would you mind taking a photo of us?
  • Would you mind not talking during the movie?

The big trap: “Not at all” means yes

The question is “Do you mind?”, so no means “I don’t mind, I will do it”. If you answer “Yes”, you are saying it bothers you!

AnswerWhat it really meansPortuguês
Not at all.yes, I’ll do itImagina, não me importo.

B1 Do you mind if I…? Would you mind if I…?

To ask for permission in a very polite way, use Do you mind if I + present simple, or Would you mind if I + past simple. The past here does not talk about the past: it just makes the question softer and more polite.Para pedir permissão de um jeito bem educado, use Do you mind if I + presente simples, ou Would you mind if I + passado simples.

do you mind if I + present

Polite and common.Educado e comum.

Do you mind if I open the window? (Você se importa se eu abrir a janela?)

would you mind if I + past

Extra polite.Mais educado ainda.

  • Would you mind if I called you tomorrow instead?
  • Would you mind if I brought a friend to the party?

More polite ways to ask

In emails and formal situations, these longer phrases sound very polite. They are great when you are asking someone you don’t know well for something important.

Do you think you could check my text?Você acha que poderia revisar meu texto?
I was wondering if you could help me.Será que você poderia me ajudar?

Polite does not mean long

With friends, very long requests can sound strange or even ironic. Match the phrase to the person: Can you…? for friends, Could you…? for most people, I was wondering if… for formal emails. Ajuste a frase à pessoa: Can you…? para amigos, Could you…? para a maioria das pessoas, I was wondering if… para e-mails formais.
