Pilot English: Flight Deck Vocabulary

Inglês para PilotosAviation EnglishB1–C1

On the flight deck, English is a working tool: pilots name aircraft parts and instruments, run checklists, give briefings, read weather reports and talk to each other with precise, standard language. This guide covers the core vocabulary from preflight to shutdown, plus the ICAO English proficiency levels.

B1 The aircraft and the flight deck

Start with the main parts of the airframe. Most of the moving parts on the wings and tail are flight control surfaces: they change the airflow so the aircraft can turn, climb, descend and slow down.

Feet, knots and nautical miles

Aviation units are almost the same worldwide: altitude in feet, speed in knots, distance in nautical miles (1 NM = 1.852 km), pressure in hectopascals (inches of mercury in the USA).As unidades da aviação são quase as mesmas no mundo todo: altitude em pés, velocidade em nós, distância em milhas náuticas (1 NM = 1,852 km), pressão em hectopascais (polegadas de mercúrio nos EUA).

B2 Checklists, briefings and callouts

Most checklists use the challenge and response method: one pilot reads the item (challenge) and the other checks it and answers with its condition (response). Answers are short: set, on, off, checked, armed. As respostas são curtas: set (ajustado), on (ligado), off (desligado), checked (verificado), armed (armado).

A takeoff briefing

Before takeoff, the pilot flying explains the plan, especially what happens if something goes wrong. Briefings use the future (will), conditionals (if) and clear sequencing words. Os briefings usam o futuro (will), condicionais (if) e palavras de sequência claras.

  • This will be a flaps five takeoff from runway 27, full length, with a left turn after departure.
  • Initial altitude is five thousand feet, and the squawk is two three four five. (A altitude inicial é cinco mil pés, e o código do transponder é 2345.)
  • Before V1, I will reject the takeoff for any fire, engine failure or warning.
  • After V1, we will continue, fly the engine-out procedure and return for landing.
  • Any questions? (Alguma dúvida?)

Standard callouts

Callouts are fixed words said at key moments. The exact wording depends on the manufacturer and the airline’s SOPs (standard operating procedures), but these are very common.

Weather: METAR and TAF words

A METAR is a routine weather report from an airport, issued every hour or half hour. A TAF is the forecast for the airport, usually for the next 24 or 30 hours.

C1 Crew communication and ICAO proficiency

Good CRM (crew resource management) depends on language. The pilot flying (PF) controls the aircraft; the pilot monitoring (PM) watches, runs the radio and speaks up. Both must be able to challenge each other clearly and respectfully.

Transfer of control

Always a clear three-step exchange, so there is never doubt about who is flying.

“You have control.” “I have control.” (Você está com os comandos. Estou com os comandos.)

Speaking up

Name the problem, give the fact, suggest the action.Diga o problema, dê o fato e sugira a ação.

Speed, plus fifteen. I suggest we go around. (Velocidade, mais quinze. Sugiro arremeter.)

Expressing doubt

Say how you feel about the situation, without blaming.

I’m not comfortable with this descent rate.

Confirming

Check before you act, especially for critical items.

Confirm engine one fire switch?

  • We’ve got an amber caution on the hydraulics. Let’s run the QRH. (Temos um alerta âmbar na hidráulica. Vamos executar o QRH, manual de referência rápida.)
  • With that crosswind, we’re close to the limit. What do you think about diverting?
  • I’ll fly, you handle the radios and the checklist. (Eu piloto, você cuida dos rádios e do checklist.)
  • Let’s slow down and do this properly. There’s no rush. (Vamos com calma e fazer isso direito. Não há pressa.)

ICAO language proficiency levels

ICAO requires pilots and controllers on international operations to demonstrate at least Level 4 (Operational) in English. Candidates are rated in six areas: pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interactions. The final level is the lowest of the six scores.

Plain English matters too

Standard phraseology covers routine situations. In an unusual event (a sick passenger, a bird strike, a strange smell in the cabin), pilots need plain English: clear, simple sentences to describe what is happening. This is exactly what the ICAO tests evaluate.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ The plane is going up to 10,000 meters. ✓ We’re climbing to flight level 330.Altitude se dá em pés e níveis de voo, e o verbo é climb.

✗ The velocity is 250 knots. ✓ The speed is 250 knots.

✗ The profundor is stuck. ✓ The elevator is jammed.

✗ I have the control. ✓ I have control.A expressão padrão não leva artigo.

✗ We will do a go around. (as a callout) ✓ Go around, flaps!
