Air Traffic Control Phraseology

Fraseologia de Controle de Tráfego AéreoAviation EnglishB1–C1

Radio communication between pilots and air traffic controllers uses standard phraseology defined by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization): fixed words, a special way of saying letters and numbers, and strict readback rules. The goal is simple: no misunderstanding, ever.A comunicação por rádio entre pilotos e controladores de tráfego aéreo usa a fraseologia padrão definida pela ICAO (Organização da Aviação Civil Internacional): palavras fixas, um jeito especial de falar letras e números e regras rígidas de cotejamento (readback). O objetivo é simples: nunca haver mal-entendido.

B1 The phonetic alphabet and numbers

Letters are never said alone on the radio, because B, D, E, P, T and V sound almost the same. Each letter has a code word. Notice the ICAO spellings Alfa and Juliett, chosen so that speakers of other languages pronounce them correctly. As letras nunca são ditas sozinhas no rádio, porque B, D, E, P, T e V soam quase iguais. Cada letra tem uma palavra-código. Repare nas grafias da ICAO Alfa e Juliett, escolhidas para que falantes de outras línguas pronunciem corretamente.

Numbers on the radio

Some numbers have a special radio pronunciation to avoid confusion: tree (3), fife (5) and niner (9, so it is not confused with the German “nein”). Most numbers are said digit by digit.Alguns números têm pronúncia especial no rádio para evitar confusão: tree (3), fife (5) e niner (9, para não ser confundido com o “nein” alemão). A maioria dos números é dita dígito por dígito.

Call signs

An airline call sign is the airline’s radio name plus the flight number: Speedbird two four seven (British Airways 247). A small aircraft uses its registration in the phonetic alphabet: PR-ABC becomes Papa Romeo Alfa Bravo Charlie.O indicativo de chamada de uma companhia é o nome de rádio da empresa mais o número do voo: Speedbird two four seven (British Airways 247). Uma aeronave pequena usa a matrícula no alfabeto fonético: PR-ABC vira Papa Romeo Alfa Bravo Charlie.

B2 Standard words, readbacks and clearances

ICAO standard words have one exact meaning. Learn them as fixed expressions: they replace whole sentences and are understood by every pilot and controller in the world. As palavras padrão da ICAO têm um único significado exato. Aprenda-as como expressões fixas: elas substituem frases inteiras e são entendidas por todos os pilotos e controladores do mundo.
