Aircraft Maintenance English

Inglês para Mecânicos de AeronavesAviation EnglishB1–B2

Aircraft maintenance runs on English: maintenance manuals, task cards, technical logbooks and defect reports are written in it all over the world. A mechanic must understand the structure and systems of the aircraft, name tools and damage precisely, and follow manual instructions word for word.

B1 Structure, systems and tools

The airframe is built like a skeleton covered by a skin. Learn the names of the structural parts, because defect reports always say exactly where the damage is.A estrutura do avião é construída como um esqueleto coberto por um revestimento.

Aircraft systems and ATA chapters

Manuals are organized by the ATA 100 chapter numbering (from Airlines for America, formerly the Air Transport Association). Every mechanic knows the main numbers by heart.

B1+ Inspections and damage

Inspections go from a quick look around the aircraft to a complete strip-down in a hangar. Intervals depend on the aircraft type and the airline’s approved maintenance programme, so the values below are typical, not fixed.

Describing damage and defects

  • I found a 10 mm crack on the left wing, near rib 5.
  • There is a hydraulic leak from the right main gear actuator.
  • The nose wheel tyre is worn beyond limits.
  • Two fasteners are missing from access panel 571AB. (Faltam dois fixadores no painel de acesso 571AB.)
  • Bird strike damage found on the radome. Dent within limits per the SRM.

FOD

FOD means foreign object debris (the object) or foreign object damage (the damage it causes): a bolt, a stone or a forgotten tool sucked into an engine.

B2 Logbooks, manuals and safety

The technical logbook (tech log) is the official record of each aircraft. Pilots write the defect; mechanics write the action taken and sign the release. Entries must be short, factual and precise: what, where, how much, and the reference used.O diário técnico de bordo (tech log) é o registro oficial de cada aeronave.

Manual language: shall, must, ensure

Maintenance manuals are written as orders. Most steps use the imperative (Remove, Install, Torque). Regulations and specifications use shall and must for obligations, and ensure or make sure for checks.

  • Remove the access panel. Disconnect the electrical connector. (Remova o painel de acesso. Desconecte o conector elétrico.)
  • Torque the bolts to 25–30 lbf·in.
  • Make sure that the landing gear safety pins are installed.
  • All work shall be inspected by a certifying technician.
  • Do not apply hydraulic pressure while personnel are in the wheel well. (Não aplique pressão hidráulica enquanto houver pessoas no alojamento do trem.)

WARNING

A risk of injury or death to people.Risco de lesão ou morte para pessoas.

WARNING: Make sure that the flight control areas are clear before you apply hydraulic power.

CAUTION

A risk of damage to equipment.Risco de dano ao equipamento.

CAUTION: Do not use metal tools on composite surfaces.

A NOTE gives extra information that makes the task easier, without any risk.

Simplified Technical English basics

Simplified Technical English (STE, standard ASD-STE100) is a controlled language used in many aerospace manuals so that non-native speakers understand instructions with no ambiguity.

Common Mistakes

Avoid these

✗ The bolt is with torque. ✓ The bolt is torqued to 30 lbf·in.“Torquear” em inglês é o verbo torque.

✗ There is a fissure in the skin. ✓ There is a crack in the skin.“Trinca” na manutenção é crack.

✗ The tyre is wasted. ✓ The tyre is worn.“Desgastado” é worn.

✗ The light is not functioning, it was deferred. ✓ Reading light inoperative. Deferred IAW MEL.Registros técnicos são curtos e objetivos.
